Trial date set for former civil servant accused of lying about GCHQ role
A former civil servant has appeared in court charged with falsely claiming to be a GCHQ intelligence analyst, the Cabinet Office's 'Head of Western Balkans' and a National Crime Agency (NCA) chief of staff.
Ifthikhar Alam, 25, appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday charged with three counts of fraud by false representation relating to job applications made between October 2021 and February this year.
It is alleged the defendant lied about his employment history to the NCA between October 14 2021 and February 4 2025 by falsely representing he had been employed as an intelligence analyst for GCHQ.
The court heard Alam initially worked at the Cabinet Office before being employed at the NCA from June 5 2023 until February 4 this year, when he was dismissed.
It is further alleged he lied about being chief of staff to the digital, data and technology director and to the technology director and senior manager in the investigatory powers unit for the NCA to the Joint Maritime Security Centre, a government body which monitors threats around UK waters, between January 8 2024 and April 30 2024.
Alam faces a third charge that he lied about his role and experience gained while working in the Cabinet Office, including about being its 'Head of Western Balkans', to the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology between February 25 2024 and December 31 2024.
Prosecutor Lyndon Harris told the court the charges arose from the defendant making applications for three separate roles, with the first at the NCA being successful.
He said: 'The information given in his applications and in the interviews for those roles was false.'
Alam, of Beaulieu Close, Camberwell, south London, spoke only to confirm his identity and enter not guilty pleas to the three charges during the hearing, having already done so at an earlier court appearance.
Judge Tony Baumgartner set a provisional trial date for February 22 2027 and granted the defendant unconditional bail.

Doyle was not required to attend today's court hearing. On Friday, Doyle appeared before magistrates in the morning, before a crown court appearance in the afternoon. Judge Menary fixed a trial date for November 24 and remanded the defendant in custody ahead of a plea hearing on August 14. Merseyside Police said yesterday that the number of people reported injured after the incident had risen to 109. Four people remained in hospital. Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses as they investigate the full circumstances of the Water Street horror. They have received more than 500 submissions to the public information portal set up in the wake of the incident. Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said: 'This is a complex and constantly evolving investigation and we are still working through and assessing those reporting being injured and our enquiries remain ongoing. Abusive mother of double amputee Tony Hudgell to be released from prison
A mother who abused her six-week-old son so severely he lost his legs is to be freed from prison. The Parole Board has ruled that Jody Simpson, who caused Tony Hudgell near-fatal injuries, can be released. The board said her imprisonment was 'no longer necessary for the protection of the public' after she had engaged with rehabilitation schemes in jail. Simpson and her partner Tony Smith, birth parents to Tony, were sentenced to 10 years in prison in February 2018 after inflicting multiple fractures, dislocations and blunt trauma to Tony's face. The boy was left untreated and in agony for 10 days. In recent years, Tony, who was adopted by Mark and Paula Hudgell, has raised £1.8 million for charity, most of which came during the Covid pandemic, when he walked 10km (6.2 miles) on his prosthetic legs. Simpson was initially let out in February this year at an automatic release point but was sent back to jail in May, after breaking her licence conditions by having 'a relationship with a convicted sex offender'. The Parole Board said she had 'engaged with art psychotherapy…and victim awareness work.' It said her behaviour in prison had been 'without issue'. In its judgment, it said: The panel noted Ms Simpson had done well for many months on licence prior to her developing an unwise relationship. However, it accepted that she now fully understands the risky situation she created for herself and the need for her to be open about her life with her probation officer. 'After considering the circumstances of her offending and time on licence, the progress made while in custody and the evidence presented at the hearing, the panel was satisfied that imprisonment was no longer necessary for the protection of the public.' Under the terms of her release licence, she will have to stay at a designated address and 'to be of good behaviour, to disclose developing relationships, and to report as required for supervision or other appointments.' She will also be subject to enhanced supervision or monitoring including drug testing, GPS tagging, signing-in times and a specified curfew. She will also only be allowed to meet designated contacts, be subject to an exclusion zone to avoid contact with victims and face restriction on her use of computers and the internet.
