‘I got demotion from CM to UT chief, LG Sinha got promotion,' says Omar Abdullah, confident J&K will regain statehood
KATRA: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday raked up the issue of restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir at the flagging off of the maiden train to Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this pilgrim town.
"There are four persons on this stage who were present at the inauguration of the Katra railway station (in 2014). You had just won the election, becoming the Prime Minister for the first time. MoS in PMO Jeetendra Singh was present then and our LG Manoj Sinha sahib was discharging duties as MoS Railways and I was here as chief minister.
"If you see, by the blessings of Mata (Vaishno Devi) Sinha has got a promotion and I had a demotion. I was chief minister of a state and now I am a CM of the UT. However, I believe that it will not take long to rectify it .... Jammu and Kashmir will again get the statehood under your watch only," Abdullah said.
The erstwhile state was reorganised into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Abdullah said many people have dreamt of seeing a train chugging into Kashmir. "Even the British had dreamt of connecting Kashmir by train but they did not succeed. Their plan was to bring rail from Uri, along the banks of Jhelum, to connect with the country. What the British could not achieve has happened at your (Modi's) hands and Kashmir has been connected to the rest of the country," he added.
Abdullah paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for declaring the train to Kashmir a project of national importance.
"It will be a grave mistake if I do not thank former PM Vajpayee. This project was undoubtedly started in 1983-84.... but it was completed only after Vajpayee declared it a project of national importance and made provisions in the budget," he said.

"However, subsequent petitions from state quota candidates led to the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking an interpretation of the SC's ruling. GMCH, in response, submitted a 147-page legal opinion and an affidavit asserting that they cannot cross 50% for IP," said a parent. Despite arguments from GMCH defending its position, all prayers were dismissed, and no UT pool was explicitly defined by the court. Parents allege that GMCH subsequently found a 'grey area' in the legal interpretations, enabling it to issue a new, controversial notification that converted the remaining 16 seats of the abolished state quota into AIQ. As per NMC norms, PG admissions typically follow a 50% AIQ and 50% state quota distribution. Parents argue that by adding the abolished state quota seats to the AIQ, GMCH inflated the AIQ percentage to an unprecedented 75%, thereby severely limiting opportunities for local candidates. Additionally, the parents have inquired of the chief secretary whether, if the seats are converted under AIQ, the medical college can conduct counselling for these seats. The first two counselling rounds, they point out, already consumed the mandated 50% AIQ, and the subsequent state counselling was expected to handle the remaining seats. "How can the All India Quota be 75% by adding the remaining state quota seats? This is nowhere on the NMC website, and it appears to be a move to specifically adjust UT quota candidates through the backdoor," said a parent. Attempts to reach both the UT administration and GMCH officials for comment were unsuccessful, as they have remained tight-lipped on the issue despite repeated inquiries from the TOI. Nagpur: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday inaugurated the Muradpur lift irrigation scheme powered by floating solar panels, calling it a 'boon for farmers' that will not only improve agriculture but also uplift rural livelihoods in the region. The scheme, implemented at the Vadgaon reservoir on the Vena River in Umred taluka, aims to provide year-round water supply to over 465 acres of farmland using solar energy. Floating solar panels installed in the Rama Dam reservoir will generate enough electricity to power the entire irrigation system, drastically cutting energy costs and enhancing sustainability. Speaking at the inauguration, Gadkari said, "Water is the most critical need for our farmers. Regular supply will not only help in agriculture but also resolve many village-level problems. This solar-powered lift irrigation scheme will enable farmers to take up two to three crops annually and increase their income." The project is particularly significant for the local population, 53% of whom belong to tribal communities. The project will include 1,000 homes (450 sqft each), concrete roads, and assured lifelong water and electricity, along with a playground and garden. Amit Shah launches language hub to 'decolonise' admin
NEW DELHI: Continuing with his govt's 'decolonisation' project, Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday launched an Indian languages section within the department of official language as a step towards dispensing with the role of English in official communication. "It would prove to be a milestone in the path to freeing administration from the influence of foreign languages," Shah said as he announced the formation of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag. So far, English had been relied upon for easy and faster official communication and filework between the Centre and non-Hindi speaking states and also among the latter. "We will definitely win the battle against imposition of English upon us," Shah, who over his six-year tenure in MHA has ensured that all filework and official communication in MHA is carried out in Hindi, declared at the launch of the Indian languages section on Friday.
