The end of Notts TV is a blow for local journalism - and the city of Nottingham

Yahoo18-02-2025

Ten years of local broadcasting will come to an end later this year as Notts TV broadcasts its final show.
The local TV station - owned and mostly subsidised by Nottingham Trent University - announced on Monday (February 17) its licence would not be renewed and it would come off air in November.
I've worked closely with Notts TV since its inception and know lots of the staff there. The kind of opportunities it can offer for journalism students on the 'Notts TV pathway' at NTU are unrivalled and I've hired many of its graduates myself. Where else could students work on a live TV station like this?

Reader, you may think I'd be celebrating the loss of a competitor. But it doesn't work like that. The local media ecosystem is a poorer place without Notts TV. We each brought something different for audiences but we found much common ground.
Over the years, we've worked on several projects together - most recently a hustings event for the East Midlands Mayoral elections which was screened on Notts TV and our Facebook pages and featured on our website and in print. Our photographer also provided imagery for the post-event publicity.
Nottinghamshire Live used to have a daily slot on the news show where we would talk about the biggest stories of the day. This personally gave me experience of live and pre-recorded television, something I would later go on to do fairly regularly in my role as editor on much bigger channels.
It's been a breeding ground for many great journalists who have gone on to different jobs and that sort of environment is important in our industry. With the number of jobs shrinking across the board, no journalist out there would take pleasure in seeing yet another outlet close down. The more voices out there in the media, the more choice the audience has, the better.
But it's the training opportunities for student journalists that will be irreplaceable in our city. That safe, yet real, environment is unlike anywhere else and will be missed. NTU has an excellent reputation for its journalism training and I hope students will still find it an attractive prospect, without the Notts TV feather in its cap.
So where does the Nottingham media scene go from here? What do you read, watch and listen to (apart from Nottinghamshire Live of course!) Will you miss Notts TV?

Ananda Lewis, former MTV VJ and talk show host, dead at 52

Ananda Lewis, a former MTV video jockey and talk show host, has passed away after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was 52. Lewis' sister, Lakshmi, announced the devastating news in a short Facebook post shared on Wednesday, June 11. 'She's free, and in His heavenly arms,' she wrote alongside a black-and-white photo of Lewis. 'Lord, rest her soul.' Former MTV video jockey and talk show host Ananda Lewis has passed away at the age of 52. Getty Images Lewis' passing this week comes nearly five years after she first revealed her Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis in an Instagram post in October 2020. 'This is tough for me, but if just ONE woman decides to get her mammogram after watching this, what I'm going through will be worth it,' she wrote in the caption of the video while announcing the shocking news. Lewis first gained popularity in 1997 when MTV hired her as a video jockey. She hosted several shows on the network, including 'Total Request Live' and 'Hot Zone.' But Lewis ultimately left MTV in 2001 to host her own daytime talk show, 'The Ananda Lewis Show.' It premiered in September 2001 and lasted one season. This is a developing story…

Resident Evil 9 Lets You Swap Between First-Person And Third-Person Whenever You Want

Resident Evil Requiem, aka the game we are all going to refer to as Resident Evil 9, was revealed during last week's Summer Game Fest. The trailer didn't confirm what perspective Requiem will use, but now we know via a hands-off demo that when Capcom's latest horror game arrives in February 2026, it will feature both a first-person and third-person option. At Summer Game Fest, Kotaku's Kenneth Shepard attended a hands-off demo of Resident Evil Requiem, which featured a new character, Grace Ashcroft, strapped to a gurney in a decrepit and dirty hospital. We saw Grace in the game's first trailer. During the demo, she escaped from the building, found a lighter, and used a fuse to solve a puzzle. Eventually, without a weapon to defend herself, she ran into some creepy monsters. That's where the demo ended. All in all, pretty standard Resident Evil stuff! The entire demo up to this point was in first-person, similar toResident Evil 7 and Village. But then, at the very end, Capcom reloaded a save file and paused Requiem. They then switched to third-person for a moment before ending the demo. So we didn't get to see a ton of gameplay in that perspective, but it's clear that Capcom wants everyone to know that this time around, you'll be able to swap between first-person and third-person whenever you want. This is a departure from recent Resident Evil games, which have been first-person only. Some longtime Resident Evil fans didn't like this, and Capcom even added a third-person mode in Village after launch. Requiem launching with this is a big deal and a sign that Capcom is listening to longtime fans, even as it continues to experiment with its long-running series. Resident Evil Requiem launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 27, 2026. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Meta AI gains video editing capabilities

Meta said Wednesday that it is adding video editing capabilities to Meta AI that let users edit short videos using preset AI prompts to change costumes, locations, and styles. With these new features, the company is taking on rivals like Google that have been steadily adding generative AI video tools to their apps, as well as other AI-powered editing platforms like Captions. The company is rolling out the editing tools to the Meta AI app, website, and its Capcut competitor, Edits, in the U.S. It says that the features were inspired by its Movie Gen AI models, but it's not clear if the company is using those models to power the editing tools. For now, users will have to deal with 50 presets to edit a 10-second video. Meta said that it gathered feedback from creators to make these presets so that they can be easily included in the Edits app. Image Credits: Meta AI The presets can apply a 'vintage comic book style' to a video, change the lighting in a clip to a rainy day, or swap out a subject's clothing to a space cadet suit, to give a few examples. You can share edited videos directly to Facebook and Instagram from the Edits and Meta AI app. Meta said it plans to add more customization options later this year. 'We built this feature so that everyone can experiment creatively and make fun, interesting videos to share with their friends, family, and followers,' the company said in a blog post. 'Whether you're reimagining a favorite family memory or finding new ways to entertain your audience, our video editing feature can help.' Meta AI already has image generation features across platforms. It seems with this video editing feature, Meta wants more creators to use its own tools rather than third-party apps.
