Former Giants star Darren Waller reveals moment he realized he was 'definitely done' playing in the NFL
After nine seasons with three different teams, Darren Waller decided to walk away from the NFL after the 2023 season. He appeared in 12 games with the New York Giants in what turned out to be the final year of his NFL career. Last June, Waller admitted in a video posted to his YouTube channel his "passion" for football "has slowly been fading." "I've decided to retire from the game of football," he wrote on Instagram. "To God: what a journey, and thank you. We took it way farther than I ever could have imagined! So grateful for all the ppl I've been able to connect and create memories with along the way. We still got plenty more life left to live. Love you all. Peace." Waller was 31 when he decided to call it quits. As Waller hit the one-year mark of his NFL retirement, the former tight end shared some insight leading up to his surprising decision. Waller said it took a handful of a games into his lone season with the Giants to realize he was ready to retire. "I knew I was retiring when we played in Buffalo," Waller said during a recent appearance on "The Side You Don't See" podcast. "It was a game where it was really controversial because one of the guys held me at the end, and they didn't call it. "It was in the first quarter of the game. We were running this counter lead running play, and I'm kind of like leading through the hole like I'm a fullback, and the play is working. But I sit down on the sideline after like a drive where we ran like three times, and I'm like, what the f--- am I doing with my life? I'm out here playing fullback. I don't even want to do this s--- anymore." The moment had a lasting impact on Waller, who said he sat on the sidelines staring up at the sky. "I'm just looking at the moon — it's early first quarter (or) second quarter — and nobody else would really even know I am thinking this, but I'm on the sideline like, 'Yep. I'm going to finish this year to the best of my ability, but I am definitely done after this year.'" The Bills outlasted the Giants in the game, celebrating a 14-9 victory. Waller finished his brief stint with the Giants with 552 receiving yards and one touchdown. He had a turbulent season that included a brief hospitalization. He sustained a hamstring injury in Week 8, which caused him to miss several games. Away from the field, 2024 also marked the end of Waller's marriage to WNBA star Kelsey Plum. The two filed for divorce in Las Vegas in April 2024. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Russell Wilson Already Impacting Change With Giants
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Last season, the New York Giants had a revolving door of players under center. They rectified this in the offseason by making a drastic upgrade at the position to serve as a sort of stopgap for the future. As mandatory minicamp comes to a close, this addition already seems to be resulting in change within the team's approach. After trading into the end of the first round of the NFL Draft, the Giants potentially found their quarterback of the future in Jaxson Dart. However, the organization is taking an old-school approach to his development. Instead of throwing him right in the mix, he'll spend year one as a backup to adjust to life in the NFL. Dart's mentor will be none other than Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson, who inked a one-year deal with New York in free agency. Wilson is coming off a season where he had to battle for the starting QB spot with Justin Fields on the Pittsburgh Steelers. He ended up taking over the role for the back half of the 2024 campaign, posting a 6-5 record in 11 starts. Now with the Giants, Willson will serve as a short-term solution at QB while Dart waits to take the reigns. Can Russell Wilson's Steelers knock off the Jets as slight underdogs on Sunday Night Football? Can Russell Wilson's Steelers knock off the Jets as slight underdogs on Sunday Night Football?Though he's had a fall from grace since his time with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson was still once among the NFL's elite quarterbacks. His presence is an upgrade for New York, who is fresh off a failed experience with Daniel Jones. Having Wilson around has also resulted in the Giants tweaking their preparation plans for the 2025 season. Earlier this week, Giants coach Brian Daboll opened up about the team getting more live reps in a 7-on-7 setting. He also cited that this change was spearheaded by Wilson, who suggested it to him. "That's something that Russell feels really good about," Daboll told reporters, according to the NY Post. "We've added some competitive periods where they have to play the situations out. Not that we didn't do that, but we've placed a little bit more emphasis on it. And not just a third-down situation, but maybe a quarter in a game, time left, score. We've done pretty much, I'd say every day we've done a little bit of that." Wilson has a lot riding on how he performs with the Giants, and he wants to make sure he's as ready as possible. With Dart already on the roster, New York has their quarterback for the future. That means this year is an audition for him to showcase his talents to the rest of the league as he looks to remain a starter in the NFL beyond 2025. Even if his time with the Giants ends up being brief, Wilson already seems to be leaving an imprint on the franchise.

The bizarre Giants moment when Darren Waller decided to retire: ‘What the f–k am I doing?'
About two hours before tight end Darren Waller tried to make a game-winning walk-off touchdown catch for the Giants, he decided to retire. Waller, who officially announced his retirement in June 2024, said he made up his mind about eight months earlier while playing against the Bills on Oct. 15, 2023. 'It was in the first quarter of the game,' Waller said on 'The Side You Don't See' podcast. 'We were running like this counter-lead running play, and I'm kind of like leading through the hole like I'm a fullback. And the play is working, but I sit down on the sideline after a drive where we ran it like three times and I'm like, 'What the f–k am I doing with my life? I'm out here playing fullback. I don't even want to do this sh– anymore.'' Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The Giants wanted a penalty flag for defensive pass interference, but that would've made two in a row since they were already playing on an untimed down after a defensive pass-interference penalty moved the ball at the 1. But I'm on the sideline like, 'Yup, I'm going to finish this year to the best of my ability, but I'm definitely done playing after this year.'' Waller's only touchdown with the Giants came the next week against Washington. He said he had trouble breathing and was 'shaking uncontrollably' and 'losing consciousness' in his hotel room. Waller came to the Giants as a recovering drug and alcohol addict who had been suspended by the NFL for substance abuse early in his career. He always has been open about his journey to getting clean. 3 Darren Waller speaking to the media at the New York Giants training facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Advertisement The former Pro Bowler returned to play the final four games of the 2023 season and publicly deflected questions about his future, but he privately informed the Giants that he was considering retirement in January, as The Post previously reported. The Giants — who traded a third-round pick in the 2023 draft to the Raiders thinking that they would have multiple seasons of Waller's services — believed he might change his mind and play again at least as late as March 2024. Waller told The Post around that same time that he was still undecided. But the Giants drafted tight end Theo Johnson in April 2024 and Waller's retirement soon followed. He is a podcaster and burgeoning rapper in retirement.
