Rail users in Mangaluru seek swift action on long-pending demands
Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada District Railway Passengers' Committee has urged the Southern Railway's Palakkad Division and the Railway Board to expedite action on a series of service and infrastructure-related demands concerning Mangaluru Central Railway Station. Responding to the committee's representation, the Palakkad Division confirmed that Mangaluru Central already has operational facilities for the maintenance of modern LHB coaches. However, it cited infrastructural limitations in addressing the wide gap between platforms and tracks, noting that yard remodelling would be required for any permanent solution. The Committee also pushed for prioritising the recruitment of local staff conversant in Kannada and Tulu for IRCTC stalls at the station. While officials noted that such contracts are awarded through a centralised tendering process, they assured that contractors would be advised to give preference to local-language speakers where possible. Development works at both Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction are currently underway. The committee's request for establishing an IRCTC lounge at Mangaluru Central has been forwarded to relevant authorities. On the issue of upgrading key trains like the West Coast Express, Maveli Express, Malabar Express, and Mangaluru–Chennai Mail to LHB coaches, the division clarified that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Railway Board and would be presented for consideration. Given the intensity of the ongoing monsoon in coastal Karnataka, the committee emphasised the need to expedite the extension of platform shelters. Officials responded that shelter extensions would be undertaken based on necessity. Meanwhile, the proposed Mangaluru–Rameswaram train service has received Railway Board approval and is now awaiting final operational orders from the Southern Railway's headquarters. Another key proposal, the resumption of the Navajeevan Express via the Hassan–Miraj–Pune route, is still pending with the Railway Board. The Southern Railway has been urged to take this forward at the earliest. The request for additional coaches on the Mangaluru Central–Subrahmanya Road passenger train has been acknowledged and will be reviewed based on passenger footfall. Expressing thanks for the official responses, the committee reiterated its demand for time-bound action on these proposals, stressing their importance for enhancing passenger experience and safety in one of Karnataka's busiest coastal rail corridors.

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's much-anticipated film Thug Life has hit another roadblock following its disappointing theatrical run. Released on June 5, the film failed to attract audiences and has been pulled from most theatres across India within three weeks. Now, its early shift to streaming has drawn penalties from multiplex chains. According to a report by Pinkvilla, Thug Life will be fined ₹25 lakh for breaching the industry-standard 8-week theatrical window before its OTT release. The film is set to premiere on Netflix just four weeks after its theatrical debut, which is half the time typically observed by national multiplex chains. A source quoted in the report said, 'There's a norm in North India to strictly follow an 8-week window. As Thug Life has breached this guideline, the National Multiplex Chains have imposed a fine on the producers. The producers and distributors will forgo their theatrical share from the Hindi version, which amounts to ₹25 lakh.' The source also revealed that Thug Life's digital rights were originally valued at ₹130 crore, but Netflix renegotiated the deal due to the film's poor performance. The final deal was reportedly settled at ₹110 crore, along with an agreement for a reduced OTT window. This marks the second time Kamal Haasan's production team has deviated from the 8-week rule, the first being with Indian 2. While multiplexes are urging the makers to delay the digital release, the film is still expected to debut on Netflix in the coming days. Thug Life features an ensemble cast including Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ali Fazal, and more. Yakshamangala award to be presented on June 27
Mangalore University (MU) will present its Yakshamangala Award for 2024 at a function in its Mangalagangotri campus on June 27. The award will be presented to Yakshagana scholars Ramananda Banari, M.L. Samaga, and Siddakatte Sadashiva Shettigar at 10.30 a.m. The Yakshamangala Book Award for 2024 will be presented to Ashoka Hasyagara of Sirsi for his Kannada book Dasharupakagala Dashavatara. The Chairman of the Karnataka Yakshagana Academy, Talluru Shivarama Shetty, will participate as a guest, while the Vice-Chancellor of the university, P.L. Dharma, will preside, said Dhananjaya Kumble, Director, in a release on Tuesday. Former V-C of Karnataka Folklore University, K. Chinnappa Gowda, shall deliver the felicitation address. The Yakshamangala award comes with a purse of ₹25,000, a citation, and a memento. The book award comprises ₹10,000 cash, a citation, and a memento. Mr. Banari, a doctor and artist, has written over 15 books, including poetry collections and medical works. He is a well-known Talamaddale artist. Mr. Samaga, a veteran performer, scholar, and former English professor, is well-versed in both the Tenku and Badagu Thittu schools of Yakshagana. Mr. Shettigar, a senior professional artist, is known for his 'Bannada Vesha' and has performed in various Yakshagana melas. Mr. Hasyagara, a senior journalist and critic, in his book, gave a comparative study of Yakshagana and Natya Shastra, and has been praised for his meticulous research and insightful analysis in it, Mr. Kumble said.
