Police releasing Liverpool suspect's ethnicity was a sign of the times
Before any details of the driver of the vehicle were made public, I must admit my mind went back to the heinous attack on young girls at a dance class in nearby Southport, which of course led to three of them losing their lives. We all know what happened after that due to very malicious misinformation posts on social media, many of them deliberately so. This whipped up a modern version of the old pitchfork mobs of history. Many participating were totally frenzied, racist, xenophobic and particularly Islamophobic, running riot in some towns and cities, mainly in England, but none at all in Scotland.

So yes, I did think to myself, 'I hope this wasn't a terrorist attack, or by an asylum seeker of colour, any Muslim, whether British or not, or basically anyone of colour.' If it had been, I dreaded to think what the consequences might have been for all these folk in England.
Clearly the authorities thought the same, and the police quickly made a statement that the alleged perpetrator was white and lived locally, and that they were not treating it as a terrorist incident. Prior to this information there was still the usual malicious misinformation online, but the speed of the announcement seemed to quell any further problems.
I thought about the gripping fear these folk I've outlined must have experienced at the time, particularly the ones directly affected by last summer's race riots. Also, I could almost hear a massive collective sigh of relief that the alleged perpetrator was white!

But hang on, this situation is utterly grotesque! Obviously there are wicked folk throughout the world of all creeds and colour, but you would never blame all the apples for one bad one. Well, not if you are white, of course!
The implication of what happened after the Southport attack is that many folk, whipped up into a frenzy not only by extreme right-wing agitators online and in communities but by far too many democratically elected politicians, are more than willing to mete out their righteous (as they see it) revenge on all individuals of colour.
We now have our very own topical story in Scotland in this respect. The recent Reform UK political advert which totally twisted comments made by Anas Sarwar was blatantly racist and John Swinney quite rightly agreed with this, as I would along with many right-minded folk.
READ MORE: Reform UK spend thousands more on 'racist' Anas Sarwar advert
Anas had stated: 'The days where South Asian communities get to lead political parties and get to lead countries is now upon us' (I'm sure oor very ain Humza Yousaf agrees with this too!). However, Reform UK twisted this into a suggestion that Anas would prioritise Pakistani people and that only Reform UK would prioritise the people of Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse (ie in the upcoming by-election). Such twisting of the facts by political parties – which could well lead to folk in the Pakistani community, not only in the Hamilton area but throughout Scotland, receiving abuse directly related to this and even worse, possibly physical harm – is just beyond the bloody pale! Why it isn't some sort of criminal offence is beyond me!
Returning to my original point, aside from those directly involved, probably not a single white person in the whole of the UK will suffer as a result of the recent attack in Liverpool. What would have been the backlash if he hadn't been white though, and particularly if he had been a Muslim? What very dark times we live in!

This is a dangerous moment for free speech
Britain without blasphemy laws is a surprisingly recent development. Blasphemy was abolished as a common law offence in England and Wales only in 2008 and in Scotland in 2021. But that was the final burial of a law dead for much longer. The last execution for the crime was in 1697; the last imprisonment in 1921; and the last successful trial in 1977 – Mary Whitehouse's prosecution of Gay News for publishing a poem about a centurion's rape of Christ's corpse. Even if 11 local councils banned Monty Python's Life of Brian two years later, the trend since has been towards trusting that the Almighty is big enough to fend for himself. Yet this week the clock seemed to have been turned back to around ad 650. Hamit Coskun was convicted of a racially aggravated public order offence motivated 'by hostility towards… followers of Islam'. His crime? Setting fire to a Quran, shouting 'fuck Islam' and declaring the faith a 'religion of terrorism' outside the Turkish consulate. The Crown argued Coskun's demonstration could not have been peaceful, since it provoked a Muslim man to attack him. The alternative explanation – that Coskun had, in a rather regrettable way, proved his main point, eluded the professionals of Lord Hermer's Crown Prosecution Service. Coskun was originally charged with the exciting new crime of harassing the 'religious institution of Islam' – treating a faith with 1.9 billion followers like someone with hurt feelings. Although that charge was not pursued, the eventual ruling's impact is effectively the same. Henceforth, anyone criticising a religion is at the mercy of the tender sensibilities of any bystanders.

Brit who vanished on stag do's likely cause of death given by police
Gary Monks' body has been found down a ravine after he disappeared during a stag do in Albufeira, Portugal, a week ago, and a police source has said what likely happened A British man whose body has been found after he disappeared while on a stag do in Portugal is believed to have fallen down a ravine to his death after jumping over a fence while lost, according to police. Greg Monks, 38, vanished during a stag party in the tourist hotspot of Albufeira in the early hours of May 28 sparking a major search that also involved his parents and girlfriend flying out to help look for him. He was last seen on CCTV in the residential area of Cerro de Aguia, located roughly four miles away from the main bar area. And tragically Portuguese police gave an update today saying that the body of a 38-year-old man had been found in the search for Greg. Sources from the law enforcement said investigators believe Greg, from Glasgow, got lost and fell to his death as he tried to get back to his hotel. Authorities said that having investigated possible paths he may have taken, they found a body in the Cerro de Aguia area. Because of the fact he laid undiscovered for a week in high temperatures, his body had begun to decompose. The well-placed police source said: 'There is nothing at this stage to indicate this man's death was linked in any way to a crime. But we need to wait for the autopsy results to conclude that is the case.' He added: 'Our belief is he lost all notion of where he was after drinking heavily and finding himself in an unfamiliar place, and that he jumped over a wall and fell to his death. The body was already in a state of decomposition when it was found.' Forensic officers have been seen at the ravine where Greg's body was found, gathering evidence. Authorities had said that the body was found "on a vacant and very uneven terrain" and that it was taken away for an autopsy. Following the devastating news that the body had been found, Greg's sister Jilian paid a heartbreaking tribute calling him "an amazing boy". Posting in the Missing Person Greg Monks - Albufeira, Portugal Facebook group, she wrote: "Didn't think it would end like this.. We are absolutely devastated! Greg was an amazing boy who everyone thought so highly of, Was friends with everyone and always made us laugh! We will miss him everyday! "I just want to thank absolutely everyone for everything they done from sharing their posts to out looking, phoning everywhere to get CCTV. She added: "The support we have received from everyone has been out of this world If love coulda saved you, you would live forever! Miss you forever brother."

Madeleine McCann police use radar to search scrubland and abandoned shacks
Madeleine McCann police use radar to search scrubland and abandoned shacks It's the third day of the latest search for the missing British three-year-old Police officers at the scene close to Praia De Luz, Portugal, where searches are being carried out by officers investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Image: © 2025 PA Media, All Rights Reserved ) On the third day of renewed efforts, detectives are continuing their meticulous search in remote areas and derelict structures for clues linked to Madeleine McCann's disappearance. Joint teams of German and Portuguese police, supported by firefighters, are painstakingly searching for evidence nearly two decades after the British toddler vanished in 2007. The focus of this week's search is on underdeveloped terrain roughly 3.5 miles from where Madeleine was last seen at Praia da Luz while she was on holiday with her family. Specialists have been spotted utilising ground-penetrating radar in the search. Madeleine went missing under tragic circumstances having been asleep alongside her younger twin siblings as her parents dined with friends in a nearby restaurant. While an "active police investigation" is ongoing Kate and Gerry McCann have chosen not to comment, according to the Find Madeleine Campaign. Article continues below The extensive search is spread across rustic fields and thicket-strewn land between the sea and the main road. The land is sparse but includes a vineyard and some abandoned buildings. Reports suggest that the search may extend to previously dug trenches around the holiday resort encompassing inspections of wells, ruins, cisterns and potentially 21 specific plots of land. The Mirror reports that German teams appear to be focusing their attention on two derelict farmhouses. Officers were seen removing rubble from one of the buildings near the edge of a cliff and flying a drone over the property. They were then spotted "meticulously" running a radar machine back and forth across the floor. Brueckner is set to be released from prison in September unless evidence can be gathered to bring additional charges against him. In October Brueckner was acquitted by a German court of unrelated sexual offences alleged to have occurred in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. The operation is expected to continue until Friday. The Metropolitan Police said they were informed about the operation but confirmed that British officers will not be involved. German investigators and Portuguese officers last conducted searches in 2023 near the Barragem do Arade reservoir roughly 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Graphic showing the new search area for Madeleine McCann (Image: PA Graphics/Press Association Images ) Brueckner, who resided in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir. Article continues below The site was previously searched in 2008 when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia funded specialist divers to scour it, following claims from criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was located there. British police were subsequently granted permission to inspect scrubland close to where she disappeared in 2014.
