Pickens strikes out 11 to send Tennessee to 3-2 win over Nebraska in Super Regional
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Karlyn Pickens struck out 11 batters and Tennessee staved off elimination beating Nebraska 3-2 on Saturday in the Knoxville Super Regional.
The two teams will face each other Sunday with the winner advancing to the Women's College World Series.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners at second and third, Pickens got Ava Bredwell to pop out to center field to end it.
Nebraska's Bella Bacon singled and pinch-hitter Emmerson Cope singled to left to send Bacon to third. Hannah Camenzind pinch ran for Cope and went to second on a wild pitch from Pickens (23-9).
Tennessee's (44-15) McKenna Gibson broke a 2-all tie in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored leadoff hitter Gabby Leach who started the inning with a four-pitch walk.
Nebraska (43-14) tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the first when Camenzind singled up the middle on a 2-2 pitch to score No. 1 and No. 2 hitters respectively; Jordy Bahl (26-7) and Samantha Bland. Bahl started the game with a single to third and Bland followed with a base hit to left.

Ella Dodge hit a two-run homer on a 1-0 pitch in the top of the first inning that scored Leach who reached base after being hit on the game's second pitch.

Westburg, Urias power Orioles to 10-1 win over Tigers
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jordan Westburg hit a three-run homer during a seven-run eighth inning and the Baltimore Orioles pulled away to a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Zach Eflin (6-2) allowed a run over 6 2/3 innings for his third consecutive victory. Keegan Akin struck out pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones to strand two and escape the seventh when it was a one-run game. Ramón Urías hit a two-run shot off Casey Mize (5-3) before the Orioles got going against the Tigers' bullpen. Gunnar Henderson singled in a run off Tyler Holton in the seventh. Then Cedric Mullin got the eighth started with an RBI double off Brenan Hanifee before scoring on a wild pitch. Ryan O'Hearn followed with a two-run double off Beau Brieske, before Westburg hooked Brieske's 1-0 offering around the left-field foul pole. Colt Keith provided the Tigers' run on an RBI double that struck high off the out-of-town scoreboard in right. Mize (6-2) struck out seven and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. Key moment After Keith's double cut it to 2-1, Detroit inserted Dillon Dingler to pinch hit with runners on second and third. Eflin induced Dingler into a sharp grounder to third, and Urías fired home in plenty of time for Adley Rutschman to tag out Wenceel Perez as the potential tying run. Key stat Eflin has now posted a 1.47 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers (18 1/3 IP, 3 ER). Up next Detroit's reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal (6-2, 2.16 ERA) looks for his first consecutive wins since mid-April after allowing only one run across his last three starts (23 2/3 IP). After his police officer son was killed nearly 20 years ago in the line of duty, he created a positive outlet for the community's youth. When Dr. Frank Merrill looks onto an East Palo Alto field, he sees more than afternoon rugby practice. "The dream for us was to make a difference, to give kids an opportunity they didn't have," he said. That dream came out of a nightmare. His step-son, East Palo Alto police officer Rich May, was shot to death by a parolee in 2006. During the trial, the defense argued that the lack of positive activities for youth contributed to the shooter's criminal history. After sentencing, Merrill got to thinking about what he could do for underserved young people. "I can't solve world hunger. I can't solve world peace. I can't change families. I can't do a lot of things, but I can given them a field to play on," said the retired veterinarian. So Merrill and his late wife, Clarice, set out to build a field to create something positive and honor Rich May, who was passionate about serving kids in the Police Activities League. "He was never one of those people who would try to fight the world. He was going to make it a better place by being amenable to working with people," Merrill said. The state-of-the-art Rich May Memorial Field opened in 2015. The Merrills and their supporters raised $2 million, mostly in private donations, and overcame years of obstacles. "When the lights came up, that was the most glorious thing I'd seen in years and years and years," Merrill recalled. Today, 700 young people use the field each day. In fact, it's so well-used that the Rich May Foundation, which Merrill started in 2017, is trying to raise a million dollars to replace the turf on the field. Under a unique operating agreement, the Rich May Foundation manages the field that is owned by the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Ravenswood School District. Rich May Field is home to the East Palo Alto Razorhawks Rugby Club. The club's grateful for the affordable rental fee, at $50 an hour, a fraction of the going rate. Coach Vaea Sanft says having a home base is a win for membership. "The last three years has doubled every year," Sanft said. "Now to have a field we can call our own: It's a blessing for these kids, and we really appreciate it." East Palo Alto Police Chief Jeff Liu, who was a good friend of Rich May, says the community also scores in crime prevention. Enriching activities on the field help create a community of good citizens. "It took a community to bring this together, and Frank was a catalyst behind that. He was the inspiration and he was the driving force to make that happen," Liu said. "They don't even realize it. They're learning good behavior and it's just good," Merrill said. "It needs to be celebrated, Frank needs to be celebrated," stated Liu. So, for building the Rich May Memorial field to foster healthy recreational opportunities, this week's CBS News Bay Area ICON Award goes to Dr. Frank Merrill.
