58% Karnataka candidates crack NEET UG 2025, Mangaluru student emerges state topper

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday announced NEET UG 2025 results, wherein Karnataka registered a qualification rate of 58 per cent, a 5 per cent drop from last year. A total of 83,582 candidates out of 1.42 lakh who appeared from the state qualified this year, compared to 88,887 candidates out of 1.5 lakh last year (59 per cent), indicating a decrease of 5,305 qualified candidates. Nikhil Sonnad from Mangaluru topped the state with an All India Rank (AIR) 17 this year. He is followed by Ruchir Gupta (AIR 22), Tejas Shailesh Ghotgalkar (AIR 38), Pranshu Jahagirdar (AIR 42), Harini Sriram (AIR 72), Diganth S (AIR 80), and Nidhi KG (AIR 84). A native of Vijayapura, Sonnad is a student of Expert PU College, Mangaluru. Positioning himself in the top 20 in India was a moment of 'satisfaction and bearing fruit of hard work'. 'I loudly exclaimed – YES! after hearing my rank. It was just pure satisfaction and validation of my hard work,' he told The Indian Express. He scored 670/720 with 99 percentile. He also secured an impressive rank of 8 in Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) in BSc Agriculture and a rank of 8000 in JEE Mains. Talking about his 'recipe for success', he said, 'I dedicated the final two months in the run-up to the exam for mock tests. However, I believe mere mock tests will not fetch you success. It is important to get your basics right, concepts correct, and the foundation strong to face the examination. This mantra helped me crack even the trickiest of the questions, including those in Physics.' 'I feel it's the attitude towards life. When I entered college, my aim was not to crack NEET. It was about learning concepts and getting a good grasp of the basics. As for preparing for the examination, it is important to solve random questions from multiple sources to achieve a strong grip on the basics. In fact, this is the principle I imbibed from my father,' he added. Born into a family of doctors – his father is a neurosurgeon and his mother an ophthalmologist – medicine was Sonnad's natural calling. He aims to pursue his higher education at AIIMS, New Delhi. Ruchir Gupta secured AIR 22, emerging as the second topper from Karnataka. A student of Alpine Public School in Bengaluru, Gupta stuck to consistency and revision. Speaking to The Indian Express, Gupta said, 'I never believed in rote learning. I was more inclined to revisions and focused on NCERT textbooks, which is a bible for NEET.' 'In fact, physics was the most challenging part. In the first few minutes of the examination… my thoughts were not in line. But, somehow, I managed to finish it,' said Gupta, recalling his experience at the examination centre. Highlighting his preparation method, Gupta added, 'I worked on at least 600 mock tests over the last two years and underwent rigorous practice. I never loaded myself with all the concepts in a single day. I used to stretch it out over the days. I ensured I gained conceptual clarity instead of mere textbook learning.' Gupta shared that he is eyeing a seat at AIIMS, New Delhi. Meanwhile, Diganth S from Narayana College in Kempapura got AIR 80. He also secured a KCET engineering rank of 289 and a 10,000 rank in JEE Mains. 'Besides textbooks, I used to solve question papers in education apps on my mobile phone. I used to solve 50-60 problems a day,' he said. Diganth's mother Nagarathna told The Indian Express, 'He was jovial and was never tense about examinations. He used to come back from college, watch TV, mainly IPL matches, have his dinner, and start studying only from 9 pm. He used to study for four hours.' NEET UG 2025: Is top rank in India's one of toughest exam possible without coaching? AIR 3 rank holder gets real on hustle

Maharashtra's Krishang Joshi has secured All India Rank (AIR) 3 in NEET UG 2025 with an impressive 99.9998189 percentile. Thrilled with the result, Krishang said he's confident the score will help him secure an MBBS seat at AIIMS Delhi . Sharing his success strategy, Krishang said that he mainly followed the teacher's guidance and study materials provided by his coaching institute. "The study materials and lesson tips provided by my coaching institute is enough to do well in NEET. Before the NEET exam, I attempted mock tests daily which helped me to secure a top rank in NEET," he told ET Now Digital . Apart from the coaching institute's study materials, he followed the NCERT books thoroughly. Are coaching classes important? Meanwhile on a question whether he could crack NEET without coaching institute's support, the topper said, "cracking and get a good rank in NEET is two different things. Any brilliant mind can crack JEE, NEET, but to get a good rank you need coaching institute and their mentor's guidance as it is not possible for a 16 or 17-year-old to know the tactics to get success in competitive exams." Krishang also appeared for JEE Mains where he secured around 4,400 rank, his marks in CBSE was 94.8 per cent. NEET-UG toppers Rajasthan's Mahesh Kumar has topped the medical entrance exam NEET-UG, while Utkarsh Awadhiya from Madhya Pradhesh has bagged the second rank, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Saturday. More than 12.36 lakh candidates out of 22.09 lakh test takers qualified the exam. The number is down from last year's 13.15 lakh qualifying candidates. However, the number of test takers was also higher last year at over 23.33 lakh. Live Events Among the qualifying candidates this year, over 7.2 lakh are females while over 5.14 lakh are males. While 529 qualifying candidates are foreign nationals, 405 are NRIs and 606 are OCI card holders. Maharashtra's Krishang Joshi and Delhi's Mrinal Kishore Jha bagged the third and fourth ranks, respectively. Among females, Delhi's Avika Aggarwal emerged topper, bagging the fifth rank nationally. The maximum qualifying candidates are from Uttar Pradesh (over 1.70 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (over 1.25 lakh) and Rajasthan (over 1.19 lakh). A total of 73 candidates have scored marks in the range of 651 to 686 out of 720 while 1,259 candidates have scored between 601 to 650. "The NTA conducts the exam and declares result based on the eligibility criteria provided by the National Medical Council (NMC). The admitting authorities will now draw a merit list based on all India rank for the MBBS and BDS seats available in their jurisdiction," said Col B Vijay Kumar, Director (Exams), NTA. The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is the largest entrance exam in the country in terms of the number of candidates appearing for the test. The NTA conducts the NEET every year for admission into medical colleges. A total of 1,08,000 seats are available for the MBSS course -- approximately 56,000 in government hospitals, and about 52,000 in private colleges. Admissions to undergraduate courses in dentistry, Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha also utilise NEET results for admission. NTA conducted NEET at 5,468 centres located at 552 cities in India and 14 cities in other countries on May 4. The cities outside India were Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bangkok, Colombo, Doha, Kathmandu, Kuwait, Lagos, Kaula Lumpur, Manama, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah and Singapore. The exam was conducted in 13 languages -- Assamese, Bengali, English, Urdu, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malyalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Odia. Over 18 lakh candidates had opted to appear for the exam in English while over 2.28 lakh candidates appeared in Hindi. A total of 73 candidates have scored marks in the range of 651 to 686 out of 720 while 1,259 candidates have scored between 601 to 650. The NTA had earlier this year announced that the crucial exam will continue to be conducted in pen and paper mode. The decision came after detailed deliberations between education and health ministries on whether to conduct the NEET-UG in pen and paper mode or online mode. In the line of fire over alleged irregularities in NEET and PhD entrance NET, the Centre had in July last year set up a panel to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations by NTA. According to the high-level panel headed by former ISRO Chief R Radhakrishnan, multi-stage testing for NEET-UG could be a viable possibility that needs to be followed up. While NEET was last year plagued by several allegations of irregularities, including paper leaks, and litigation, UGC-NET was cancelled as the ministry received inputs that the integrity of the exam had been compromised. Both matters are being probed by the CBI. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
