Contentious pub on menu for shopping centre south of Perth
Another tavern for Kwinana and a revamp of dining options at the suburb's central shopping location is on the cusp of being ticked off for development.
The new tavern headlines a long desired but now controversial quest to improve offerings at Kwinana Marketplace, which is recommended for approval by State planners due to meet on Wednesday afternoon.
A licensed restaurant, dining venues, shops, children's playground and an amusement centre could also all open in space created by the expansion, which spills into 19 existing car bays, and remodelling the inside food court.
Locals say any facelift is well overdue but many questioned — or have outright railed against — the need for a new watering hole, especially so close to Kwinana Local in area designated purely for retail.
Most who spoke up during a recent consultation period said a new pub in the area would only increase existing antisocial issues, while other eateries along the Chisham Avenue 'Main Street' say creating a new food and entertainment precinct will be detrimental.
The Local also weighed in, claiming new competition would not only affect their business but their sponsorship and support of the area's sporting teams and community groups.
'There is no evidence in the proposal that it will not have an adverse effect on existing businesses or provide better amenity for the community than that which already exists,' Kwinana Local director Paul Tropiano wrote in a submission. He strongly objected to another tavern licence being granted in the Kwinana town centre, given a further three already operate within 5km of his venue.
'The four taverns together provide the local community with sufficient choices, but another tavern would be the tipping point for the viability of these businesses,' Mr Tropiano said.
'If we lost business to another tavern, we would not be able to continue with the same level of community support that we presently provide, which would be a great loss to the community.'
If approved, the redevelopment would increase the size of Kwinana Marketplace by 406sqm and bring outdoor seating to the western edge, including a beer garden for the tavern.
The new dining and drinking precinct would be about 150m from Callistemon Court Aged Care Facility, just across Gilmore Avenue.
Applicant Lateral Planning spruiked that the council's Kwinana City Centre Master Plan encourages street activation, and in its report the City of Kwinana agreed the application was 'generally consistent with the vision, objectives, concept and design guidance of the Master Plan'.

Labor's decision on power credits at Thursday's State Budget comes as government marks 100 days of third term
Labor ministers have backed curbing cost of living support in favour of more targeted measures, as households face life without power bill credits. Asked on Sunday whether she believed Labor should continue the $400 annual rebate on electricity bills, Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the Government had committed to keeping rises below the inflation rate of 2.8 per cent. 'Cost of living measures should be targeted to support people who are doing it tough,' she said. 'We'll obviously continue to monitor it, and we continue to support the community through a range of cost of living measures, including the WA schools assistance payment, and of course, we'll have the Commonwealth rebate coming very shortly through power bills.' The decision on credits will be revealed in Thursday's State Budget, which comes in the week the Government marks the first 100 days of its third term. Premier Roger Cook said his government had been focused on jobs, health and housing. 'In just 100 days, we've seen the growth of our resources sector, delivered major elements of our Made in WA plan and seen major milestones in our efforts to turn WA into a renewable energy powerhouse,' he said. 'We're also collaborating even more closely with industry, in our efforts to make our economy more resilient and remain the strongest economy in the nation. 'Importantly, we have deepened our relationship with the Federal Government, and it's great to have their ear on things like the GST, the North-west shelf and the need for environmental reforms that deliver greater certainty for industry and better outcomes for the environment.'

Northern suburbs congestion buster Stephenson Avenue extension to open by September
Northern suburbs commuters are due traffic relief soon, with the Government revealing the long-awaited Stephenson Avenue extension to the Mitchell Freeway will open by September. The project, which Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said had been spoken about for nearly 40 years, is set to take pressure off roads around Osborne Park and Innaloo — especially at peak traffic times in the afternoon. Construction for the road saw the bridge extended incrementally over the Freeway. 'Every driver going up and down this freeway would have seen that bridge coming across the Freeway and now we'll be completing these works, and this area will be open by the third quarter of this year,' Ms Saffioti said. Ms Saffioti said the project was about more than just improving congestion. 'A key part of the overall vision of this project is releasing of land, the creation of new housing lots — this will not only be a new road network, but also a new housing precinct the City of Stirling,' she said. 'The City of Stirling has held long and held aspirations to create this, to create a significant community hub around this precinct. 'As part of the work that we're doing, we're creating the housing lots that will be ready for future housing and future developments.' Ms Saffioti was speaking at the announcement of an $100 million investment in next week's State Budget for road upgrades in the northern suburbs, including the Reid Highway Erindale Road flyover, which will start work in 2028.
