The ancient Maya were a group of Mesoamerican Indigenous people who developed one of the most advanced societies in history, which such achievements as a complex written language and amazingly accurate calendar systems. One of the thriving capitals of Maya civilization was Copán—a city in modern-day Honduras that acted as a travel hub between Central and South America. A new study analyzing skeletons buried near Copán reveals the collapse, but not total erasure, of the Maya civilization over 1,200 years ago.
'Our findings indicate a decline in population size,' Shigeki Nakagome, a co-author of the study, told Live Science, that 'aligns with a scenario proposed by archaeologists in which the population decreased but did not become entirely extinct.'
Published on May 28 in the journal Current Biology, the study included analysis of the genomes of seven individuals from the Classic Maya period—or the period in which Maya civilization experienced destabilization and eventual collapse—to investigate the hypothesis that Copán was ruled by outsiders. Inscriptions previously found in Copán suggest the first ruler of the dynasty, K'inich Yax K'uk' Mo', was an outsider who assumed power in 426 B.C. The theory suggests that a network of Maya elites migrated to the region and married with the local, non-Maya population, creating immense social change. Previous studies analyzing tooth enamel support the migration hypothesis.
Researchers found that each of the seven individuals had different marriage lineages. Two of the people—one a possible member of the ruling dynasty, and the other a victim of human sacrifice—belonged to the same Y-chromosome haplogroup. A haplogroup is a population that has the same genetic markers passed down by a common ancestor. However (though this seems remarkable), it doesn't mean that the two individuals were closely related.
'Even though the dynastic ruler and the sacrificed individual share the same Y-chromosome haplogroup,' Nakagome told Live Science, 'we did not find any kinship.'
On top of comparing the individuals' genomes to each other, researchers also compared the sets with previously sequenced genomes from across the Americas and Siberia. The scientists found strong evidence of genetic continuity between ancient and modern Maya people, suggesting 'the enduring persistence of local ancestry in the Maya region,' according to the study. Researchers also found an influx of people with ancestry from highland Mexican populations extant during the early to mid-Classic period. These outsiders could have been part of the dynasty of Copán.
Finally, researchers used time-stamped genomes to estimate population sizes at different points in time. The study determined that Maya society saw a sharp increase in population that peaked around 730 A.D. at 19,000 people. According to researchers, the spike likely occurred thanks to the emergence of maize agriculture. Researchers saw a subsequent decline in population around 750 A.D., 'coinciding with the onset of the collapse of Classic Maya civilization,' according to the paper.
The scientists on the study juggled many questions while conducting their research, which ultimately furthers our understanding of both the ancient and contemporary Maya people.
'[O]ur research offers a new perspective, suggesting the enduring persistence of local ancestry in the Maya region,' the researchers wrote, 'while also highlighting the broader mobility beyond the conventional boundaries of the Maya territory.'

An 'invisible threat': Swarm of hidden 'city killer' asteroids around Venus could one day collide with Earth, simulations show

A hidden swarm of "city killer" space rocks, known as co-orbital asteroids, is likely hiding around Venus and could pose an "invisible threat" to Earth over the coming millennia if the asteroids are not found, new simulations suggest. However, there is no immediate danger to our planet, researchers told Live Science. Co-orbital asteroids are space rocks that orbit the sun alongside a planet or other large body without truly orbiting the larger object. There are currently 20 known co-orbitals around Venus — ranging from "Trojan asteroids," which are fixed either in front of or behind a planet in its orbital plane, to a closely circling "quasimoon," known as Zoozve — all of which likely originated from the solar system's main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Dozens of similar co-orbitals also tag along with Earth, and more are being discovered all the time. All of the Venusian space rocks are likely wider than 460 feet (140 meters) — large enough to be considered "city killers," meaning they could potentially wipe out a heavily populated area if they impacted our planet. Although the co-orbitals pose no threat to us from afar, a close approach to Earth could cause them to be pulled away from their gravitational anchor — and thus put them on a collision course with our planet. Venus is one of our closest neighbors and comes closer to Earth than any other planet — within around 25 million miles (40 million km) at its nearest point — making its trailing asteroids a credible threat to our world. All but one of the planet's known co-orbitals have eccentricities greater than 0.38, meaning they have very elongated trajectories around the planet. This suggests there is an observational bias, likely because objects with lower eccentricities are probably being obscured by the sun's glare. Co-orbitals can also move around relative to Venus, which can change their chances of colliding with Earth in the future. Previous research has shown that this likely happens to the space rocks once roughly every 12,000 years — known as a co-orbital cycle. In a new study, which was uploaded May 21 to the preprint server arXiv and is currently undergoing peer review, researchers carried out a series of computer simulations to gauge whether hidden asteroids with lower eccentricities could threaten Earth. To do this, the researchers "cloned" known co-orbitals with eccentricities below 0.38 and simulated how they might behave over a 36,000-year period (three co-orbital cycles). The simulations revealed that some of the newly added co-orbitals could pose a threat to Earth during this period. However, the study offers no indication of how likely a future collision really is, because it is "hard to predict" how many co-orbitals there really are, study lead author Valerio Carruba, an astronomer at São Paulo State University in Brazil, told Live Science in an email. "How many exactly is an open question." Since the new study was first uploaded, several media outlets have overhyped the risk of an imminent collision, with several tabloids claiming Earth could be hit by Venusian asteroids "within weeks." But there is nothing in the study to support those claims. "None of the current co-orbital objects will impact Earth soon," Carruba clarified. Carruba has been disappointed by some of the reporting surrounding the new study, but is glad the topic is being covered. "There has been some sensationalism about this research, and our work has been cited with some liberties," he said. "But we hope that this attention could raise interest in a very exciting class of asteroids, which should be more carefully monitored." The researchers also highlighted the recent discovery of the city killer asteroid 2024 YR4, which was initially predicted to have a 2.3% chance of colliding with Earth in 2032, before the odds were later downgraded to zero. This was an important reminder of the importance of detecting and monitoring potentially hazardous asteroids, they wrote. However, it may also be prudent to send a telescope to Venus' orbit to specifically hunt for these objects, the researchers wrote. "I believe that we should not underestimate their potential danger, but I would not lose sleep over this issue," Carruba said. "Soon, our understanding of this population will improve."

By Kantaro Komiya TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese startup ispace aims to become the first non-U.S. company to achieve a controlled moon landing as it prepares for the touchdown of its second uncrewed spacecraft on Friday, two years after its inaugural mission ended in failure. Tokyo-based ispace hopes to join U.S. firms Intuitive Machines and Firefly Aerospace, which have accomplished commercial landings since last year amid an intensifying global race for the moon that includes state-run missions from China and India. The mission also highlights broad public- and private-sector expectations from Japan, which remains committed to lunar exploration as part of NASA's Artemis moon program, despite mounting uncertainty about its future as President Donald Trump reshapes U.S. space policies. "A moon landing is not a dream but it has become a reality," ispace CEO Takeshi Hakamada has said. The company's first lunar lander in April 2023 crashed onto the moon's surface due to a software issue that incorrectly assessed its altitude during descent over precipitous terrain. Its second lander, named Resilience, in January shared a SpaceX rocket launch with Firefly's Blue Ghost lander. Blue Ghost took a faster trajectory to the moon and touched down successfully in March. Currently circling about 100 km (62 miles) above the lunar surface, Resilience carries a rover built by ispace's Luxembourg subsidiary and payloads worth a total of $16 million, including scientific instruments from Japanese firms and a Taiwanese university. After Friday's landing on Mare Frigoris, a lunar sea relatively close to the moon's north pole, scheduled for 4:17 a.m. Japan time (1917 GMT, Thursday), the 2.3-metre-high lander and the microwave-sized rover are tasked to capture images of regolith, the moon's fine-grained surface material. If successful, ispace said it will transfer the ownership of the collected material to NASA to fulfil what it says would be the world's first commercial transaction of lunar resources. According to a 2020 NASA statement, ispace's Japan and Luxembourg units would each receive $5,000 under this arrangement. NASA was not immediately able to comment on the impact of the Trump administration's proposed budget reductions on the contract. An ispace spokesperson declined to comment. JAPAN'S LUNAR ENTHUSIASM The company envisions establishing a lunar colony of 1,000 inhabitants by the 2040s, tapping the moon's water resources. It plans seven more missions in the U.S. and Japan through 2029, including a NASA-sponsored one as part of the Artemis program, to capitalize on increasing demands for lunar transportation. About a dozen corporate partners have provided support for ispace missions, including titanium materials from Citizen Watch and design expertise from automaker Suzuki. In Japan, a wide range of businesses from construction firms to carmakers engage in lunar exploration research, and the breadth of industrial interest in the moon may surpass that in the United States, said Atsushi Uchida, Research Director at Mitsubishi Research Institute. The government has been keen to promote Japan's roles in the Artemis program, signing an agreement with NASA last year to include two Japanese astronauts and a Toyota-built rover in forthcoming missions to the lunar surface. Exploration of the moon and Mars is one of the key objectives of Japan's newly-established multibillion-dollar space venture fund. "Having ispace, a domestic transportation option, is a huge advantage for Japanese businesses and universities that foray into lunar exploration using government funds," said Ritsumeikan University professor Kazuto Saiki, who participated in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) SLIM mission that achieved Japan's first lunar landing last year. JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa said last month that he was rooting for ispace's re-attempt because their "success will attract attention to the whole Japanese space industry." Investors are keen. Shares in ispace, which made a blistering market debut in 2023 but languished after the landing failure, have risen about 60% year-to-date, epitomising a space startup boom in the Japanese capital market.
