UN Volunteer Day in Jordan encourages youth to participate in community development
AMMAN — The International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2024 celebration in Jordan, held on Wednesday at the Hussein Sports City, showcased the transformative power of youth volunteerism in driving environmental protection and community development.
Organised by the UN Volunteers (UNV) Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) in collaboration with UNICEF Jordan and the Ministry of Youth, the event brought together key stakeholders, government officials, and over 100 volunteers to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Rooted in a 1985 UN General Assembly mandate, IVD serves as a global platform to promote volunteerism and acknowledge its role in achieving the SDGs at local, national and international levels.
This year's event featured impactful activities, including planting 400 trees and enhancing public spaces at Hussein Sports City. Volunteers from Youth Centres, the Youth for Sustainability (Y4S) initiative, and the 'Nahno' demonstrated their dedication to creating a greener and more sustainable future.
Minister of Youth Yazan Shdeifat emphasised the government's commitment to fostering a culture of volunteerism to address community needs and advance the SDG's.
'Jordan has made advanced steps in institutionalising and organising Volunteer work. These include programmes implemented through youth directorates and centres, support for localised youth initiatives, the launch of the Al Hussein bin Abdullah II Award for Voluntary Work, and the development of a volunteer work charter to regulate relationships between volunteers and organisations,' the minister said.
Shdeifat also noted the impact of the National Platform for Volunteering and Youth Participation, "Nahno," launched by the Crown Prince Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry and UNICEF, which offers diverse volunteer opportunities across various sectors.
Partnership for impact
The event featured remarks from Sheri Ritsema-Anderson, UN Resident Coordinator in Jordan who highlighted the interconnectedness of volunteerism and national progress.
"This year's International Volunteer Day forms a part of a series of event that we have been organising across the country to commemorate the values of the UN and the support for sustainable development of Jordan itself. The UN supports over 200 volunteers international and national in the country, as well as the thousands that he helped mobilise with the Nahno platform, in collaboration with various Jordanian counterparts,' she said.
Olga Zubritskaya-Devyatkina, UNV Regional Manager for Arab States, told The Jordan Times, 'Every year, one billion people volunteer globally. In Jordan, where the majority of the population is young, we want to engage them in national development plans of Jordan. Volunteering helps the youth to develop soft and technical skills while shaping their future.'
Shairose Mawji, UNICEF Deputy Representative to Jordan reflected on the transformative power of youth volunteerism, stating, "Since 2021, over 180,000 young people have joined the 'Nahno' platform. This is what Jordan needs. As the climate is one of the critical issues in Jordan, with water scarcity, volunteerism is crucial for improving the situation.'
'We believe that every young person has the potential to positively influence the society. Today's event is another illustration of how volunteerism of young people can transform challenges into opportunities for a better tomorrow," she told The Jordan Times.
Skills for a sustainable future
For many young volunteers, the event was an opportunity to gain new experience. 'Volunteerism is also way to experience various skills, which will result in job opportunities for them. Practical experience and giving back to their own communities provide them with a sense of achievement,' Mawji told The Jordan Times.
'The thing I learned today was planting. I never planted anything before and I learned a lot today,' said Bira', a pharmacy student at Al-Zaytoonah University, to The Jordan Times. She added the will to give back what her country gave her.
For Mustafa, a law student at Al-Zaytoonah University, and Hadi, a 18 year old student at Zarqa University, it is also a way to give back to their community, share their ideas. 'It is good to be giving, instead of taking,' said Mustafa.
All three of them volunteer on a regular basis with the 'Nahno' platform. As the first platform of its kind in Jordan, 'Nahno' bridges the gap between youth aspirations and community needs, fostering positive change across the Kingdom.

Al Hussein Society: An Exemplary Entity in Serving Humanity
During this week while the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, people and leadership, still exults the national Day of Independence, very passionate gifted children in Jordanian national dresses and hatta raising high the Jordanian flag equally and with great momentum celebrated the Day of Independence. During the end-of-year celebration, children with unique enthusiasm and joy echoed loyalty and gratitude in an institution which is but an exemplary entity and a source of pride. On June 3, Al Hussein Society – Jordan Center for Comprehensive Training and Integration (AHS), with an unprecedented gesture ended the year without the usual yearly graduation ceremony and instead organized end-of-year celebration. A gesture linked to a great achievement by AHS of extending its school years to the sixth primary class. An accomplishment which is but the outcome of the colossal dedicated efforts of the late Princess Majda Ra'ad whose name beautifully and most adequately crowned the name of the school 'Princess Majda Ra'ad School for differentiated Education.' Thus, the celebration commemorated children's transition to new academic highs. This much needed development in the comprehensive education system of AHS will best prepare the children and equip them with all the needed skills and knowledge for them to successfully move from their childhood stage towards adolescence in a new environment. On June 3, the memory of Princess Majda Ra'ad was best honored with the multi themes performance of the children. A performance best testifies that the efforts of Princess Majda Ra'ad in serving humanity were and will be always rewarding and alive. The performance was launched with approaching the Lord with the beautiful voice of student Ibrahim to be followed with a recital of Mohammad Jamal Amro poem 'The Rights of the Child' by a little angel Mariam whose brilliant passionate recital did eclipse her physical imperfection. The remarkable start of the celebration was followed with a joint performance by all the children through singing with strength and passion 'My goals' by Pierre Ja'ja', a song inspired by and reflecting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). A performance that well reflects the success of AHS in educating the children and AHS staff on SDG in sign language. Certainly this performance together with the succeeding dancing and singing 'Ala Rasi Al Ordan' and 'Alordonieh' dedicated to the Day of Independence well reflects AHS ongoing efforts in disseminating awareness on good governance and good citizenship together with culture of peace and accepting the other. As customary, AHS honored its staff those with decades of service in an environment each member is valuable in realizing the goals of AHS starting with providing a safe, secure loving environment for the children. What represented indeed an added value to the celebration was the distribution of gifts to the children donated by an unknown benefactor who very well delivered joy to the children and their families. A unique joy which made one of the children Hassan to follow this author and show her with great pride the gift he received. Witnessing such an event involving children with so much peace and confidence with their inner selves expressing true happiness accompanied by their families proud of their empowered children is but a testimony of the remarkable unparalleled status, role and contribution of AHS. The celebration commenced with a documentary on how Princess Majda Ra'ad inspired AHS team towards complementing her efforts and realizing her dream in providing genuine comprehensive training and education to Jordan's loving children. And the celebration ended with AHS Executive Director Mrs. Annie Mezagopian Abu-Hanna promising to keep the legacy of Princess Majda Ra'ad very much alive with big emphasis on realizing and implementing SDG. Jordan's most valuable source of wealth is its human capital. Through its unwavering devoted efforts in serving humanity, AHS team best represents Jordan's wealth of human capital.

Gaza aid centers close temporarily as shooting of civilians draws global outrage
Humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza faced a fresh setback on Wednesday after the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announced the temporary closure of its centers, citing a need for 'renovation, reorganisation and efficiency improvement.' The decision comes just one day after 27 Palestinians were killed near one of the centers in southern Gaza, when the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) opened fire as crowds gathered to receive food. The IOF, which confirmed the closures, issued a warning to residents to avoid roads leading to the GHF sites, declaring them 'combat zones.' No further information was given on the duration or specifics of the so-called renovations. The shooting incident has drawn international condemnation, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres calling the deaths of civilians seeking food 'unacceptable.' The IOF has denied deliberately targeting civilians, claiming troops opened fire on individuals who were 'approaching in a way that endangered' soldiers. IOF spokesperson Effie Defrin confirmed an investigation is underway. The GHF, which began operations just last week with US backing and private funding sources, has also denied responsibility. The organization employs US-contracted security forces and has faced criticism for operating without cooperation from the UN or major humanitarian agencies, who have raised concerns about the group's ties to IOF interests. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk labeled attacks on civilians as 'unconscionable,' warning they may constitute 'a grave breach of international law and a war crime.' The International Committee of the Red Cross echoed those concerns, stating that Gazans are experiencing an 'unprecedented scale and frequency' of mass casualty events. As the situation worsens, the UN Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. However, the measure is expected to be blocked by the US.
