Beautiful European beach rated best in the world and it's only €53 from Ireland
With summer holiday season just around the corner, many people across Ireland will already be planning their sun-soaked escapes. If you're a beach lover and still undecided, TripAdvisor has just named the best beaches in the world - and the number one spot is right here in Europe with flights from Ireland starting at just €53.
As part of its 2025 Travellers' Choice Awards, TripAdvisor ranks favourite destinations, hotels, restaurants and things to do around the world, based on reviews and ratings collected over 12 months. This means the winners were decided by real travellers from all over, who shared real opinions and stories.
Elafonissi Beach in Greece has been crowned the world's best beach, thanks to its jaw-dropping pink sands, clear turquoise waters and unspoiled natural beauty. Tripadvisor said: "With pink (yes, pink) sands and turquoise waters, Elafonissi Beach is just one of those places you have to see to believe. The shallow lagoons are perfect for curious children, while the deeper waters invite all sorts of adventure for adults: swimming, snorkelling, you name it. Just make sure to stick around until sunset - you won't regret it."
This beautiful sandy strip is located on the island of Crete, and it rejoins the list for the first time in four years. According to Tripadvisor, the best time to visit is between May and September, when the destination is warm and has sunny weather with significantly fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months of June, July and August.
And there's good news for those planning to visit from Ireland. Ryanair flies direct from Dublin to Chania, Crete from June to October, with fares as low as €53 in October. Summer flights are still affordable too - from €89 in August and €67 in September. You can check out the various different flight options on Skyscanner here.
Chania Airport is about a 90-minute drive from Elafonissi, and there are a number of local and international travel agencies that operate bus trips to the beach everyday. Among the options in Chania town is the Ruby Luxury Suites hotel, which has received a remarkable 9.7 out of 10 star rating on Booking.com and costs €682 for a week's stay in May.
For those wanting to stay closer to the beach itself, visitors will find accommodation like the top-rated Elafonisi Resort by Kalomirakis Family hotel, just 150m from the beach, from just €599 for a week's stay in May. There are plenty of budget-friendly stays nearby, as well as restaurants.
Aer Lingus also offers routes to Heraklion in Crete - slightly further away but still reachable at around 210km from the beach.
Visitors have been raving about the experience on Tripadvisor. Peter from Dublin said: "The beach is magnificent but be prepared for lots of other visitors and a long walk down from the carparks. Make sure you don't stop at the first carpark as there are lots of carparks much closer to the beach entrance. Sun beds are expensive but necessary unless you have your own sun umbrella with you. If you are travelling through the mountains be sure to stop at the small vendors along the way selling lots of natural Cretan products including honey balm which is amazing. Also take the coast road home it is a magnificent drive but not for the faint hearted! Enjoy the sunset too."
A couple from Cork also left a review, saying: "Our first impression of this beach was why was it in the top 25 in world. However as we walked on and discovered an area to ourselves we begun to understand. Many beaches in Ireland match this beach in scenery and beauty. No beaches in Ireland have waters that warm! We sat on a rock eating a picnic with our feet in the water. Bring a rubbish bag with you if you plan a picnic. We then went for a gorgeous swim. I'm glad we went on this day trip!"
The beach itself also boasts a small island you can wade to, a shallow kite-surfing lagoon, scenic walking trails, daily boat trips and even a lighthouse for the explorers.
President of Tripadvisor Kristen Dalton said: "Tripadvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards uniquely reflect the voices of millions of global travellers and help guide people to plan their best trip yet. In my family, beaches aren't just for sunbathing - we like to get out and explore! The diversity of this year's winners really showcases everything that a beach trip can have to offer.
"Whether it's strolling the beautiful pink sand beaches of our world winner, Elafonissi beach, in Greece, experiencing breath-taking vistas in Indonesia, whale watching in Hawaii or diving in magical bioluminescent waters in Thailand - there really is something for everyone. This year's lists span an incredible six continents and 50 countries with over 100 of the very best beaches showcasing the eclectic mix of coastal spots across the world."

Popular YouTube group buy every scratch card on Ryanair flight
Popular YouTubers The Sidemen have filmed themselves buying every scratch card on a Ryanair flight, to see if it was worth it. The YouTube group, who boast over 22million subscribers on their official channel, comprise of seven popular YouTubers, with the most notable being JJ 'KSI' Olatunji. Member of the group Vikram 'Vikkstar' Singh Barn, as well as Ethan 'Behzinga' Payne and Harry 'W2S' Lewis were on a Ryanair flight where the lads, in an impromptu challenge, bought every available scratch card on the flight that Ryanair sell. Pic: Getty Images Of course, scratch cards and playing the lotto in general have long been called a tax on stupidity, but then again if you have YouTuber money you can probably afford to buy hundreds and hundreds of the cards — which is exactly what the lads did, and filmed it for Vikk's Instagram. 'We're on a Ryanair flight, and this man Ethan has bought every single scratch card on the flight,' Vikk told his followers, before revealing how he got on — saying 'I've opened about 100 scratch cards… we have not won a single thing.' Ethan bought a further 68 packs of the scratch cards, but got absolutely zero joy; with Vikk saying 'we've opened all of these [shuffles through scratch cards] and not a single one [has won].' The lads then asked if anyone on the flight at all has won money, with no one saying that they have, with Vikk saying that they'll keep going before Harry interjects to say 'no we won't.' The video, surprisingly, served well as a cautionary tale on the waste of time and money that are scratchers; with one person commenting on the video: 'I don't think I've ever seen a better advert against buying scratch cards.' 'Them boys buying hundreds of scratch cards and winning £0 has Ryanair sweating,' one joked, while another commented: 'This was made in public interest to warn gamblers obvs.' Vikkstar and Behzinga bought 'every' scratch card on the flight, and won a grand total of €0. Pic: Vikkstar/Instagram Ryanair's scratch cards came under fire a number of years ago, after it was revealed that anyone who 'wins' on the scratch card's jackpot is then entered into a separate draw for the chance of winning the €1million prize. The 2016 report found that the 'lucky' winner would then be invited into a room with 125 envelopes that they must choose, with just one having the top prize. It was also revealed that the actual odds of winning the jackpot in the draw, which was found in the fine print, were 1.2billion to one. For comparison, the odds of winning the Lotto here are 10.7million to one, while the odds of winning the EuroMillions are 139.8million to one. The last draw where someone got the chance to win €1million was won in March, where the lucky winner won a (still impressive) €100,000.

Ryanair to base fourth aircraft at Shannon adding routes to Madrid and Lapland
Ryanair announced on Wednesday it will add a fourth aircraft at Shannon Airport this winter, described as a 'gamechanger' for the region, adding 100,000 passengers. The announcement will see three new routes this winter to Lapland, Madeira and Madrid, in addition to extra flights on six existing routes - Alicante, Edinburgh, Kraków, Lanzarote, Manchester, and Wrocław - for Winter 25/26. The announcement will help to deliver 20% traffic growth to Shannon. 'This expansion offers even greater choice for our passengers and strengthens Shannon's position as a key gateway to and from the West of Ireland. Ryanair's investment is a powerful endorsement of the potential of Shannon, a vote of confidence in the market here, and a testament to the progress we've made growing passenger numbers,' said Shannon Airport Group chief executive Mary Considine. 'We see a huge potential for growth and believe there is a real opportunity for Shannon Airport to lead the way in rebalancing the national landscape." Ryanair's chief commercial officer Jason McGuinness said the company is investing €350m in the region. Speaking to the Irish Examiner, he said: 'We've been here at Shannon Airport for 36 years. There's an ambitious management team here that understands the competition they face against the 40 countries and 240 airports that Ryanair operates across Europe. 'We are probably one of the biggest single investors in regional Ireland at the moment. We've doubled the amount of seats we're offering across regional Irish airports and we have doubled the number of passengers we have in Shannon from 800,000 to 1.6m.' Passenger numbers at Shannon Airport reached a 15-year high in 2024, surpassing 2.1m in the 12 months. The addition of a fourth aircraft will mean it will have one more than Cork Airport, which last year reported 3.1m passengers. Asked if Ryanair will also seek to increase its fleet in Cork Airport, Mr McGuinness said: 'I would hope so. We are very committed to regional Irish airports. We have three aircraft based in Cork this winter, but I would hope that could increase. I'm happy to talk to anyone of our 240 airports across Europe.' 'Both airports can grow and we can add more routes to both, but we have never been shy in saying that we allocate capacity wherever costs are best and where we can get the best long-term deals. If the DAA want to come up with something better in terms of its cost base for Cork, we're very happy to talk to them.' 'In terms of our plan to grow from 20m passengers to 30m, the majority of that growth, around 60%, was actually in regional airports, predominantly in Cork and Shannon.' The added aircraft for the 2025 Shannon Airport winter season will result in an additional $100m investment by Ryanair, which Mr McGuinness said is already investing heavily in the region. 'There will be a direct extra 30 jobs spanning across pilots and cabin crew, as well as additional in maintenance and in engineering. We're also likely to be announcing more maintenance jobs in Shannon over the next few months.' Mary Considine, CEO of the Shannon Airport Group told the Irish Examiner: 'This is a massive vote of confidence for us. The more aircraft we have here, the more frequency and services Ryanair can offer. In addition to increased frequencies for our six most popular routes, they have also been able to announce three new routes for the winter.'
