DENVER (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno has a hairline fracture in his right index finger and could be sidelined until after the All-Star break.
Moreno was injured June 6 in Cincinnati, then played through it for more than a week. He was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Monday.
'I appreciate what he was trying to do," manager Torey Lovullo said Friday night before the Diamondbacks faced Colorado. "I know that he had some at-bats that he was working through, pain-wise, and they were successful at-bats. He was just gutting it out, but it just became too much.'
Star outfielder Corbin Carroll was out for a second straight game because of a contusion on his left hand after he was hit by a pitch Wednesday night in Toronto. X-rays showed no fracture and he was available off the bench Friday night.
Meanwhile, left-handed reliever A.J. Puk had surgery on his left elbow Friday. He will miss the rest of the season.
The surgery was to determine the condition of the ligament in his pitching elbow and if he would need it replaced.
'If the ligament's still in place, they won't replace the ligament,' Lovullo said. 'They'll just do that external bracing. If the ligament is damaged and they need to put a new ligament in there, yeah, it'll be officially Tommy John surgery.'
Starter Corbin Burnes had recent Tommy John surgery, and reliever Justin Martinez will undergo the procedure.
Carroll was working on the field Friday before the game.
'Corb is much better, trending in a very positive direction. And just want to give him a work day, just try and get out, see how he feels,' Lovullo said. 'The last thing you want to do is put a bat in your hand and have something sting. So he's going to do all that he can. So as of right now, he'll be available for the game, and then we'll hopefully trend upward from there."

Eugenio Suárez homers twice to reach 300 in the Diamondbacks' 14-8 victory over the Rockies

DENVER -- Eugenio Suárez homered twice to become the third Venezuelan-born player to reach 300, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 14-8 on Friday night. Suárez, who tied his season high with four hits, went deep in the fifth and sixth innings to reach the milestone. He trails only Miguel Cabrera (511) and Andrés Galaragga (399) among Venezuelan-born players. Ketel Marte drove in five runs with a three-run home run and two-run double, and Ildemaro Vargas finished a triple shy of the cycle and hit his first homer of the season for Arizona, which had a season-high 21 hits. The big offensive night spoiled Austin Gomber's first home start of the season. Gomber (0-1), who began the year on the injured list with a sore left shoulder, made his season debut Sunday at Atlanta with five scoreless innings, but was tagged for nine runs and 12 hits in 4-2/3 innings against Arizona. Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen (5-8) navigated through five shaky innings to get the victory. Colorado sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored six runs to take a 7-6 lead. Ryan McMahon and Mickey Moniak homered and Hunter Goodman had a two-run double in the inning to rally from a five-run deficit. Suárez's second home run of the night and team-leading 24th of the season stretched Arizona's lead to 11-7 in the sixth inning. He leads the majors in RBIs with 65. Colorado has hit seven home runs in two games against Gallen this season. He had given up two to the Rockies in his previous 15 starts against them. Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (6-3, 3.41) will make his 17th career start against Colorado, facing LHP Carson Palmquist (l0-4, 7.76).

Misiorowski perfect into 7th in 2nd career start, Yelich drives in 8 and Brewers beat Twins 17-6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski took a perfect game into the seventh inning of his second career start, Christian Yelich drove in a career-high and franchise-record eight runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers scored 16 times in the final four innings to beat the Minnesota Twins 17-6 on Friday night. Misiorowski became the first pitcher to start his big league career with 11 consecutive hitless innings as a starter since 1900. He threw five no-hit innings against St. Louis on June 12, but left in the sixth with cramping in his right calf and quadriceps. The 6-foot-7 right-hander struck out six with a fastball topping out at 102.1 mph and a slider and changeup in the mid-90s. Misiorowski (2-0) walked Byron Buxton to start the seventh inning and Matt Wallner followed by lofting an 0-1 pitch into the flower bed above the right field wall. Waller's launch angle was 44 degrees. After the homer, Misiorowski was pulled for reliever Nick Mears and left to a standing ovation from a crowd that included thousands of Brewers fans. Misiorowski threw 86 pitches, 60 for strikes, and departed with Milwaukee leading 8-2. Yelich had bases-clearing doubles in the seventh and eighth innings and RBI singles in the sixth and ninth. He became the first player since RBIs became an official stat in 1920 to drive in at least eight runs without a homer, according to OptaSTATS . Milwaukee moved a season-high six games over .500, while the Twins have lost seven of eight. Joe Ryan (7-3) allowed three runs on 5 1/3 innings on 101 pitches. Key moment After seeing four straight pitches of at least 100.8 mph from Misiorowski, Willi Castro twisted like a corkscrew and dropped to the ground as he struck out on a 95.5 mph slider in the first inning. Key stat Misiorowski threw 29 pitches of 100 mph or higher, topping out at 102.1 mph and throwing 12 of 101 mph or more. Up next José Quintana (4-2, 3.55 ERA) starts for Milwaukee on Saturday against Minnesota's Simeon Woods Richardson (2-3, 5.13). ___ AP MLB:

Luke Weaver allows go-ahead homer in Yankees' 5-3 loss to Orioles after being activated from IL

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Luke Weaver felt fine about everything in his return for the New York Yankees — except the fastball Ramon Urias hit for a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. Weaver was activated from the injured list Friday, but his first game back from a strained left hamstring was spoiled when Urías poked a full-count 96.4 mph fastball into the first row of the right field seats for the Baltimore Orioles. 'I feel great,' Weaver said after taking the loss in the Yankees' 5-3 defeat. 'The only thing that hurts is my heart and mind. So, at the end of the day, my leg feels great. The velocity's there. All the pitches are there. So, I had everything I needed to be successful. It's just a game which (it) didn't happen.' After jogging in from the bullpen to the 'Imperial March' from Star Wars and Gary Wright's 'Dreamweaver,' Weaver got ahead with his fastball and changeup. He threw two changeups to even the count and another fastball for a full-count. On the next pitch, Urías hit a 337-foot jump that just went over the leaping try of Aaron Judge and deflected off a fan's shirt in the first row. Following the homer, Weaver struck out Colton Cowser but walked Gary Sanchez and allowed a single to pinch-hitter Ryan O'Hearn. After Dylan Carlson lined out, Tim Hill allowed a RBI single to pinch-hitter Gunnar Henderson. Weaver gave up two runs and two hits in two-thirds of an inning. It was the third homer allowed in 25 appearances for the right-hander, who missed 17 games. 'I don't think that far off,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Weaver. 'They just took advantage of some pitches.' Weaver was injured while warming up before a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 1 at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break. Instead, Weaver began feeling better quickly and said the pain disappeared shortly after the injury. He took his final steps in his rehab by throwing a simulated game Tuesday after throwing three side sessions. Weaver has a 1.71 ERA with eight saves in nine opportunities in 25 appearances. He ascended into the closer's role by converting six saves in seven chances after Devin Williams posted an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances and was removed from that spot on April 27. 'I kind of look at (it) with him and Devin like we got two elite guys back there, obviously with how well Devin's been throwing the ball the last month,' Boone said Friday before the game. A 31-year-old who can become a free agent after the season, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September. From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to make appearance on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021 — though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18. Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5. The Yankees cleared room for Weaver by optioning Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre. Sandridge was called up Thursday when Yerry De los Santos went on the injured list with right elbow discomfort. ___ AP MLB: recommended
