Over 680 exceptional talents and researchers in technology sector obtain Saudi Premium Residency

RIYADH — The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced at the fourth edition of the LEAP 2025 Technology Conference that as many as 685 exceptional talents and researchers in the technology sector have obtained Premium Residency in Saudi Arabia under the 'Exceptional Competence Residency' product.
This was revealed in a session on the second day of the LEAP 2025 Tech Conference at the Riyadh Exhibition and Convention Center on Monday. Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha inaugurated the conference under the theme "Into New Worlds" at the Riyadh Exhibition and Convention Center on Sunday.
The list of holders of Premium Residency under the 'Exceptional Competence Residency' product is topped by 5G technology specialists with 16 percent, followed by cloud computing specialists with 15 percent. These fields are the cornerstone of enhancing digital infrastructure, which enhances the Kingdom's position as a leading country in adopting modern technologies.
In the context of supporting innovation, Premium Residency was granted to experts in artificial intelligence and machine learning, who constituted 12 percent of the talents who were granted Premium Residency. These fields are among the priorities in the Kingdom, due to their role in contributing to the development of many sectors such as healthcare, education, and digital industries.
Big data experts constitute 13 percent of the number of Premium Residency recipients, and it is one of the specializations that is witnessing rapid global growth in advanced economies that rely on the analysis of large and complex data.
The attraction was not limited to these fields, but also included attracting professionals in Internet of Things technologies, financial technology, and advanced computing, which are areas that are considered priorities in supporting the growth of the Kingdom's digital economy for the present and the future.
These experts came from various countries around the world, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Brazil, India, Pakistan, and Egypt.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology seeks, through the "Exceptional Competence Residency" product provided by the Premium Residency Center, to empower global digital talents in the Kingdom and enhance the innovation environment. This contributes to achieving the Kingdom's Vision 2030, and enhances its position as a global center for artificial intelligence, technology, and innovation, and contributes to job creation, knowledge transfer to national cadres, and enhancing the exchange of experiences.

Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — For the first time during the Hajj season, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior has introduced a smart medical wristband powered by artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance the health and safety of security personnel serving pilgrims in the field. The wearable device continuously monitors the vital signs of officers deployed across the holy sites and sends real-time alerts to the Command and Control Center at the Security Forces Hospital in Makkah. In advanced or emergency cases, medical intervention is immediately dispatched. The Command and Control Center is equipped with electronic screens directly connected to the wristbands. A specialized medical team monitors the incoming data, classifies cases by urgency, and generates heatmaps to track health risks among personnel. The system enables proactive medical response based on real-time health indicators. The wristband is also capable of sending SOS alerts directly to the center, facilitating instant communication between the medical team and the officer, and allowing field units to provide immediate assistance. The system is fully compliant with national cybersecurity standards and data privacy regulations established by the National Cybersecurity Authority and the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA).

Saudi Arabia to host second WTO regional trade policy course in 2025
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The General Authority for Foreign Trade (GAFT) held a virtual meeting with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to discuss preparations for the second edition of the Regional Trade Policy Course (RTPC), scheduled to take place in the Kingdom in 2025. Deputy Governor for Shared Services Nasser Al-Dughaither, represented GAFT in the meeting. The meeting, included GAFT's Director General of Human Resources Hamoud Al-Malki and Director of Talent and Development Badr Al-Ajlan, focused on enhancing cooperation to organize the RTPC, improving the course's quality and outcomes, and developing specialized workshops for stakeholders involved in trade negotiations. These efforts aim to deepen participants' understanding of WTO agreements, rules, and procedures. Al-Dughaither emphasized that Saudi Arabia's three-year hosting of the RTPC reflects its global economic leadership, particularly in the Middle East, and aligns with national goals to empower regional trade policymakers and elevate their capacity to meet international trade standards. He expressed optimism about the upcoming edition, building on the success of the previous course, which featured robust scientific content and active participant engagement. The first edition of the RTPC was hosted in Saudi Arabia from October 13 to December 5, 2024, in partnership with King Saud University and the WTO. It saw participation from around 25 government officials representing nine countries, along with 12 Saudi government entities, covering over 24 training topics.

SFDA elected to Management Committee of MedDRA, the 6th global regulatory body
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — In a move that highlights Saudi Arabia's growing prominence in global pharmaceutical governance, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been officially elected to the Management Committee of the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA). The authority has thus become the sixth regulatory authority worldwide to join this prestigious global medical body. This election marks a pivotal milestone for both Saudi Arabia and the international scientific community, reflecting global confidence in the SFDA's regulatory excellence and the Kingdom's strategic role in advancing international harmonization in drug safety and medical product oversight. MedDRA, developed by the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), is a globally recognized standard for coding and analyzing safety data across the lifecycle of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products. It plays a central role in regulatory communication, post-market surveillance, clinical trial reporting, and signal detection. SFDA's election to the MedDRA Steering committee was confirmed during the ICH Management Committee meeting held in Madrid, Spain, from May 11–12, 2025. With this appointment, SFDA joins a group of regulators, including the European Commission, U.S. FDA, UK MHRA, Health Canada, Japan's MHLW and PMDA, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), which participates as an observer. This strategic appointment reaffirms SFDA's active leadership within ICH working groups, particularly in the areas of medical terminology and pharmacovigilance. Among its most impactful contributions is the linguistic and technical leadership demonstrated in the translation and validation of over 20,000 MedDRA terms into Arabic—a landmark initiative completed between May and October 2022.
