Karnataka reports third Covid-19 fatality amid rise in cases

A 63-year-old man who had tested positive for Covid-19 died at a private hospital in Mysuru on May 25, pushing Karnataka's coronavirus death toll to three, health officials confirmed on Friday. The patient was admitted on May 15 and succumbed ten days later. A statement from the state health department attributed the death to septic shock complicated by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), acute kidney injury (AKI) with reduced urine output, Covid pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and hyponatremia. He also suffered from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and bronchiectasis. (Also Read: 67 dead as record-breaking rainfall batters Karnataka, over 19 lakh at risk: Report) As of May 30, Karnataka has 234 active Covid-19 cases, with 114 new cases reported on the same day, according to the health bulletin. A total of 460 tests were conducted, including 406 RT-PCR and 54 rapid antigen tests. The test positivity rate stood at 24.7 per cent, with a case fatality rate of 0.8 per cent. Health officials reiterated that Covid-19 testing must be carried out in all Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases and selectively—up to 5 per cent, among Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases. Throat swab samples must be sent to designated labs for RT-PCR confirmation. The department also directed all testing to be done in government laboratories and emphasized that test kits must be used on a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) basis to prevent wastage. UTSA cruises to 10-2 victory over Kansas State in nightcap of Austin Regional

Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — James Taussig hit a three-run homer and Norris McClure added a solo shot to back a strong start by Zach Royse and No. 2 seed UTSA beat third-seeded Kansas State 10-2 in the nightcap of the Austin Regional on Friday. UTSA (45-13) will play No. 1 seed Texas on Saturday. Kansas State (31-25) will play an elimination game against No. 4 seed Houston Christian to start the day. Andrew Stucky had an RBI single in the first inning and McClure homered in the third for a 2-0 lead off Wildcats starter Jacob Frost (1-5). Taussig homered off Ty Ruhl with two outs in the sixth for a 6-1 lead. Ruhl retired the first batter he faced after replacing Frost before Taussig hit the first pitch he saw out to center field. He finished 2 for 4 and scored twice. Ty Hodge and Lorenzo Morresi had RBI base hits in a four-run seventh. Royse (9-4) allowed one run on three hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Christian Okerholm pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close it out. Nick English had a pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh for the Wildcats off reliever Robert Orloski. Driver had blood alcohol level twice the legal limit in fatal Yellowstone crash, police say

The driver of a pickup that crashed into a tour van near Yellowstone National Park this month, killing seven people, had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit for driving, police said Friday. The driver, identified previously as Isaih Moreno of Humble, Texas, had a blood alcohol content of 0.20, Idaho State Police said in a statement. The limit is 0.08. 'This tragedy should be a wake-up call,' police Capt. Chris Weadick said. 'No one plans to cause a crash or take a life when they get behind the wheel, but choices have consequences.' Investigators determined that the Dodge Ram driven by Moreno crossed the center line and collided with the Mercedes van, which was carrying 14 people, in the May 1 crash. Both vehicles caught fire. Moreno and six people from China, Italy and California were killed. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries. The highway where the crash happened south of West Yellowstone, Montana, is a route between Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons that is open in the spring before a north-south route is plowed and the park fully opens for summer. Yellowstone is one of the country's largest national parks and draws millions of visitors each year.
