Proposition 36 helping Inland Empire authorities crack down on retail theft
Less than year after
Proposition 36 was passed
by California voters in a landslide, local law enforcement says that it's giving them a leg up in cracking down on retail theft.
The law, which went into effect in December 2024, increased penalties for some drug-related and theft crimes and allowed for felony charges in cases where someone was convicted three times. Prior to its passing, any theft of less than $950 was classified as a misdemeanor.
Riverside and San Bernardino County law enforcement says that it's helping them hold repeat offenders accountable for their crimes and enforce consequences.

, which included following along as the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Robbery-Burglary Suppression Team busted alleged shoplifters at multiple stores in Lake Elsinore. They say that since going into effect, RSO has presented 335 felony theft cases to the District Attorney's Office.
In San Bernardino County, though their numbers aren't quite as high, they say that they've conducted four retail theft operations and arrested more than 40 people on felony theft offenses, many of which qualified for the charges because of Prop 36.
The new law has made for some viral moments already, including in Seal Beach where cameras inside of a patrol car
caught two shoplifting suspects
as they discussed the new charges they could be facing after stealing from multiple stores.
Critics of the law still argue that it will lead to overflowing prisons, full of people who aren't a danger to the public. Local DA's say it's meant to be a deterrent to people who repeatedly take from small businesses trying to make an honest living.

Three arrested after probation officers find meth, firearms in Lincoln St home
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Three people were arrested on Tuesday after a search of a home on Lincoln Street led to the discovery of drugs and weapons, according to the Kern County Probation Department. On June 3, probation officers conducted a home call in the 1400 block of Lincoln Street, according to officials. During the search of the home, officers found about 30 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a loaded improvised 12-gauge shotgun frame and barrel, a loaded .38 special single shot pistol, a .22 caliber revolver, several rounds and U.S. currency. Alva was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm, possessing ammunition by a prohibited person, resisting an officer by force, possessing a controlled substance for sale and other drug-related charges. The probation department said Alva also had an active felony warrant. Ramiro Vasquez, 47, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance for sale and an active felony warrant. Rogelio Alba, 39, was arrested on suspicion of resisting officers and possessing a nunchaku, the department said. 42 arrested in Inland Empire smash-and-grab crackdown
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced several dozen arrests in its continuing crackdown on retail theft crews. Between May 17 and 30, SBSD personnel and representatives from local, state and federal agencies arrested 42 people across the county, the SBSD said in a news release. Of those 42 arrests, 10 were for felony charges and 32 were for misdemeanors. Additionally, more than $8,100 in property was recovered, authorities said. The arrests are part of Operation Smash & Grab, which targets retail theft, especially in 'the Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills shopping districts,' the release said. These robberies, burglaries, vandalism and other crimes are done by crews of organized thieves who 'terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents,' according to the Sheriff's Department. Bakersfield man on probation arrested on suspicion of drug sales under Prop 36
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man was arrested after a home search led to the discovery of cocaine and money in his home on Tuesday, according to the Kern County Probation Department. On June 3, officers with the probation department's Post Release Community Supervision Unit conducted a home call in the 100 block of Hudson Street, according to officials. Officers found about 240 grams of suspected cocaine and U.S. currency in various denominations at the home, officials said. Erik Gutierrez Vega, 19, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, possessing a controlled substance for sales and keeping a place to sell drugs, according to the department. Gutierrez Vega was also arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs with two prior convictions under Proposition 36.
