Airbnb pulls the plug on summer parties

Yahoo20-05-2025

The Brief
Airbnb is using a machine to flag certain booking attempts in order to crack down on parties.
Depending on what it finds-- it will then block or redirect users to an alternative accommodation on the platform.
If your reservation was flagged, but you weren't intending on having a party - you can contact support and sign a contract promising not to do so, called an anti-party attestation.
TAMPA, Fla. - Heads up for anyone planning to rent a house this holiday weekend; Airbnb's anti-party system will be in effect for Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends.
How it Works
The system uses machine learning to flag certain booking attempts by looking at a range of factors, like the type of listing booked, how long the stay is, if the booking is last minute and if the potential booker has had complaints about parties or concerning behavior before.
Depending on what it finds-- it will then block or redirect users to an alternative accommodation on the platform.

What they're saying
"We've already seen a remarkable amount of progress through introduction of this technology," said Airbnb's Emilie Simons. "Since 2020, there's been a 46% decrease in reported parties in Florida. Just last year in 2024, across these major summer holiday party weekends, Fourth of July and Memorial Day, about 7,400 people were deterred from having a party. "
In Florida, last year's overall rate of listings reported for a parties was 0.08%, so the defense technology appears to be working.

According to Airbnb, parties are still extremely rare.
Year-round, they do have a community disturbance policy in place where hosts and guests can face consequences if they violate it.
The company warned if you beat the system – and decide to throw a house party in an Airbnb anyway – you could get the boot from the platform altogether.
What you can do
If your reservation was flagged, but you weren't intending on having a party - you can contact support and sign a contract promising not to do so, called an anti-party attestation.

Nvidia dethrones Microsoft as the world's most valuable publicly traded company with a $3.45 trillion market cap

The AI chipmaking giant led by CEO Jensen Huang surpassed Microsoft after its stock jumped 3% to close at $141.40 on Tuesday. Nvidia now boasts a market cap of $3.444 trillion, edging out Microsoft's $3.441 trillion based on data from Nasdaq. The last time Nvidia held the top spot was on January 24. Since last June, it has been competing with Apple and Microsoft for the title of the top market cap company. The rise in Nvidia 's value came a week after the company reported Q1 revenues that beat Wall Street expectations at $44.06 billion, which makes for a 69% year-over-year increase. Confidence in Nvidia remains high despite the company expecting to lose $8 billion in revenue over the next quarter due to the Trump administration's new chip export control policies, which prevented it from selling its H20 chips developed specifically for China's market. Huang has expressed dissatisfaction over chip controls during the earnings call and in media appearances that followed. "On export control, China is one of the world's largest AI markets and a springboard to global success. With half of the world's AI researchers based there, the platform that wins China is positioned to lead globally," Huang said during the May 28 earnings call. "Today, however, the $50 billion China market is effectively closed to US industry." "Export controls should strengthen US platforms, not drive half of the world's AI talent to rivals," Huang added. Immediately after the earnings call on May 28, Nvidia shares shot up nearly 5% after trading hours, and as of June 3, had gained nearly 24% over the past month. Overall, this week, investors flocked to chip stocks. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF climbed 2%, while individual companies like Micron Technology also gained as much as 4%.

Alphabet stock could tumble 25% in a 'black swan' scenario that forces it to divest Google Chrome, Barclays says

There's a big risk hanging over Alphabet stock, Barclays says. The bank said Alphabet being forced to sell Chrome is a black swan scenario that could spark a 25% stock plunge. Tech firms like OpenAI have signaled interest in buying the platform. The worst-case scenario in Google's antitrust trial could slash Alphabet's stock price by as much as a quarter, according to Barclays. Analysts at the bank hashed out the various possibilities that could follow the decision in Google's antitrust case. Last year, a federal judge ruled that Alphabet operated a monopoly in online search and search advertising. The court is expected to decide on a remedy on the matter in the next several months. While it's unlikely, it is possible that a court decision forces Alphabet to divest Google Chrome to another owner, like Microsoft, Barclays floated in a client note on Monday. That would represent a black swan event for the stock, an unlikely but plausible tail risk that could lead to a major decline. If Alphabet were to divest Chrome, that could potentially hit earnings-per-share by more than 30%, the bank estimated, given that Chrome provides 35% of Google's search revenue and has around 4 billion users. The scenario could send its stock falling around 15%-25%, the bank estimated, partly because "no investors" the bank has spoken to are pricing in that scenario. "The probability of a Chrome divestiture, while low, has increased in our view," analysts wrote. "To our surprise, and this may have just been the style of the judge's approach to put the Google attorneys on the spot, he indicated that this might be the 'cleanest' remedy of the lot." Other tech firms, like ChatGPT creator OpenAI, have already said they might be interested in purchasing Chrome if it were up for sale. Barclays sees other remedies related to the trial that could be more likely. Google, for one, could provide its index to licensees in order to help its competitors. That could hit earnings per share around 10%-15%, and potentially spark a 5%-10% hit to the stock, the analysts estimated. The tech giant could also be forced to start a "phased roll off" of its traffic acquisition contracts, which means Google won't be able to pay third parties to direct users to its platform. That scenario could hit earnings per share by 10%-20%, potentially taking the stock down 5%-10%, they estimated. The Department of Justice, which initiated its suit against Google in 2020, said in a statement shortly after the federal ruling that it believed Google had "subverted competition" for more than 15 years. The Google parent has said it disagrees with the ruling and will appeal the decision after remedies are decided. The Department of Justice's proposal to divest Chrome and Android, in particular, would hurt businesses and increase cybersecurity and national security risks, Alphabet said in a statement.
