Major roadwork in Midland set to begin, drivers should expect delays
One of Midland's busiest roads is about to get a major overhaul, and while that means a few months of inconvenience for motorists, town officials say the work is badly needed.
Starting next week, Yonge Street will undergo a full reconstruction between Second Street and Norene Street, while sections from King Street to Second Street and from Norene Street to County Road 93 will be resurfaced with fresh asphalt.
'This project has been in the works for a while mainly due to the infrastructure aging out and failing, so our underground pipes and water mains and our sanitary sewers are reaching the end of their life, so it's time to replace it," said Mitch Sobil, with the Town of Midland.
It's estimated around 12,000 vehicles use Yonge Street on an average day. While full closures are not planned, motorists should be prepared for rolling lane closures and delays over the next few months.
The project is expected to wrap up in November.
The reconstruction is part of a broader effort by the town to tackle aging infrastructure. In addition to the Yonge Street project, Midland was awarded a $30 million grant to upgrade the town's water and wastewater treatmetn plant and to extend services along the Highway 12/93 corridor to support new housing.
