Singapore spaceport: Did you know the nation is ideal for space travel?

Could there be a spaceport in Singapore some day, launching both satellites and humans into space?
In late 2024, an executive at space-tourism company Virgin Galactic, Mr Mike Moses, told The Straits Times it could envision building spaceports in locations such as Singapore.
A similar idea was floated as far back as 2006, when a bold plan to build a US$115 million "Spaceport Singapore" near Changi Airport was announced by a consortium of investors and an American space-tourism firm.
At the time, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore even said it had begun formulating regulations for commercial spaceflight.
That plan never materialised, however.
When contacted recently, a spokesperson for Singapore's Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn) said there are currently no near-term plans for a spaceport.
But she added: "We believe our space sector has a solid foundation for multiple space-related opportunities."
Industry players and analysts agree, noting that a spaceport here could leverage Singapore's transport-hub status and proximity to the Equator - with the latter also offering fuel-saving advantages for certain launches.
In 2023, the Center for Space Policy and Strategy - a think-tank within The Aerospace Corporation, a non-profit funded by the United States government to support its space programmes - published a paper arguing that Singapore has "all the makings of a serious space nation".
It is not the only one in the region with spacefaring ambitions. Indonesia is keen to have its own spaceport, while Thailand and South Korea have partnered to study the feasibility of building a Thai one.
But the paper highlighted Singapore's wealth, well-educated workforce, advanced manufacturing, equatorial location, and status as a maritime and aviation hub. These are "characteristics that suggest it could play a more prominent role in the domain in the years ahead".

Mr Richard Lamb, systems director at The Aerospace Corporation and an expert on spaceports, tells ST it would be reasonable for Singapore to consider operating one.
"It's a timely question because we're on the verge of seeing humanity start to travel in space far more frequently.
"Space tourism represents a component of that, but we can also look forward to point-to-point space transportation," he says, referring to the possibility of using suborbital space flights to travel from one point on Earth to another.
And Singapore's location, demographics and economy are all "good arguments for entering the spaceport conversation".
That sentiment is echoed by Mr Simon Gwozdz, founder of Equatorial Space, a Singapore-headquartered start-up developing rockets and space-launch services.
"Space logistics are a natural extension of the other types of logistics Singapore has already mastered, including maritime and aviation," he says.

Too small for a spaceport?
But in land-scarce Singapore, the first question that comes to mind with any large infrastructure project is whether there is enough room.
Says Ms Lynette Tan, chief executive of Space Faculty, a Singapore-based organisation developing talent for the space industry through education: "The current requirements for a spaceport do involve significant land use, which Singapore may not be able to provide."
This may not be a deal-breaker, though.
"That's the beauty of horizontal space launch missions like Virgin Galactic's and point-to-point space transportation," Mr Lamb says.
In these launches, the initial phase sees an aircraft take off horizontally from a runway, similar to a conventional plane. Then, once it is airborne, a rocket is fired to carry the payload into space.
"There are a number of companies around the world trying to build the next space planes. All of that is horizontal, so you can operate adjacent to or as part of an airport because the take-off and landing are no different," says Mr Lamb.
While launches near an airport such as Changi would require careful planning, horizontal space launches, even in populated areas, are probably going to be a very exciting sector in the future, he predicts.
"And I think Singapore is as reasonable a location as any."
Many space flights are already launched close to big cities, Mr Gwozdz points out. "I don't think people realise just how close many launch sites are to popular areas.
"In Florida, many launch facilities are within a few kilometres of Port Canaveral, a tourist destination. And you can go there and view some launches from fairly up close.
"For testing and R&D, there's always the possibility of something going wrong, so you do want to give yourself some additional safety buffer," he adds.
"However, if you already have an operational and well-validated system, the space constraints can be reduced."
Mr Gwozdz also raises the possibility of launching spacecraft from the seas around Singapore - by using a modified barge as a platform, for instance.
"What we really have going for us is the South China Sea. There is a massive area there that is reserved mostly for military exercises and comes under the Singapore Flight Information Region (airspace) - and it's larger than the airspace SpaceX has for launches in Florida."
Equatorial advantage

Singapore's low latitude - just over one degree north - is a plus too.
The Earth rotates fastest at the Equator, where it spins eastwards at 1,670kmh. This creates a slingshot effect that gives rockets launched eastwards from here a free boost, reducing fuel needs or increasing payload capacity.
However, Mr Lamb notes that this benefits only some missions, such as those launching spacecraft into geostationary orbits circling the Earth directly above the Equator.
"And the space tourism or point-to-point space transportation market will probably be driven less by orbitology and more by the commercial demand signals," he says.
Concerns about inclement tropical weather - think monsoon season, or Singapore's high rate of lightning strikes - are also overblown, Mr Gwozdz believes.
"Many locations used as launch sites, such as French Guiana and Florida, have weather very similar to Singapore's. So it's just something you have to deal with."
Flourishing space industry
Another advantage is that Singapore already has a nascent but flourishing space industry, largely focused on satellites.
According to OSTIn, there are more than 70 companies and 2,000 professionals and researchers here working on everything from satellite design and manufacturing to data processing.
Many of them would love to see a spaceport on these shores.
Mr Lim Wee Seng, executive director of Nanyang Technological University's Satellite Research Centre, says: "Singapore could be a good place to build a spaceport, and one part could be for space tourism and the other part for satellites."
He thinks it could also make sense to operate this as a regional network of launch sites.
"It may or may not be in one central location, and we could even launch in our neighbouring countries.
"It would be more ambitious if all of South-east Asia worked together, with different ports in different places."
If Singapore does construct a spaceport, regional relationships will be more important than ever - and could be a hurdle.
"Rockets can appear kind of scary, including to the neighbours," says Mr Gwozdz. So, if a launch involves another country's airspace, "the biggest challenge we'll have to overcome is operational cooperation with our neighbours".
But if there is enough will, there's definitely going to be a way, he adds. "And we've got a lot of the building blocks already in place."

Huawei founder waves off US chip curbs while trade talks proceed

BEIJING - Huawei Technologies founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei dismissed the impact of US export restrictions on China in a front-page People's Daily article, wading into one of the key topics dogging Washington-Beijing trade negotiations. Mr Ren, one of the country's most recognisable business figures, told the Communist Party's official newspaper he wasn't worried about Washington's efforts to cut off the flow of US technology to China's chip sector. Domestic firms could resort to means such as chip packaging or stacking to achieve results similar to that from advanced semiconductor technology. Mr Ren also expressed confidence in the interview that China can make breakthroughs in AI and software, particularly in an increasingly open-source environment. The US has put restrictions on chip design programs for Chinese firms, though Washington could also remove those pending the outcome of talks. The prominently placed article appears timed to coincide with a second day of sensitive negotiations between the US and China, which are seeking to ease tensions over shipments of technology and rare earth elements. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's presence at the talks underscore the importance that export controls are playing in these discussions. Mr Lutnick has said China isn't capable of producing high volumes of sophisticated semiconductors, a sign American export controls are limiting its progress. Semiconductor packaging or stacking refers to the techniques of bundling chips together to make them more powerful - Huawei has been relying on this method to make its most powerful AI chips at Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., aiming to develop silicon as sophisticated as what Nvidia offers. Huawei has in past years evolved from a telecom gear and smartphone maker into one of China's national tech champions, making advances in semiconductors, EVs and AI. It's also one of Washington's biggest targets, given persistent accusations of its ties to Beijing. The company has repeatedly stressed it's an employee-run company. Mr Ren, a former People's Liberation Army officer, has emerged as one of the tech sector's most prominent voices since the first Trump administration added the company to the so-called Entity List. That move significantly curtailed Huawei's access to US technologies, initially walloped the business and sped its exit from several major markets. But Huawei has since regained market share in smartphones, developed a more advanced process than the US thought possible, and is now making inroads into the AI and EV software markets. In May, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that Chinese AI rivals are filling the void left by the departure of US companies from that market, and their technology is becoming more powerful. PHOTO: ST FILE Grab says it's not in talks to buy Gojek parent GoTo 'at this time' SINGAPORE – Grab Holdings said it isn't in talks to acquire Gojek parent GoTo Group 'at this time,' signalling it's halting or at least pausing a planned US$7 billion (S$9 billion) acquisition of its South-east Asia internet peer. 'The parties are not involved in any discussions at this time and Grab has not entered into any definitive agreements,' Grab said in a statement on June 9. 'Indonesia continues to be an important country in serving our mission as we continue to outserve our Indonesian customers, driver- and merchant-partners.' Singapore's Grab and Indonesia's GoTo had made headway on a potential deal structure, but the pace of talks had slowed recently over concerns about potential regulatory demands, Bloomberg News reported previously. Indonesia's antitrust agency said in May it would look into potential risks and urged the companies to ensure any deal won't create a monopoly. Shares of Grab dropped 3.9 per cent to US$4.98 in US trading on June 9. The stock has advanced 41 per cent in the past 12 months as Grab's profitability improved, but remains down more than 50 per cent since its listing in New York through a merger with a blank-cheque firm in late 2021. Grab, which is backed by Uber Technologies, has held on-and-off talks with GoTo for years. But a merger never materialized, partly because of antitrust concerns likely to arise from combining South-east Asia's two dominant ride-hailing and food-delivery companies. Uber left the region in 2018 in exchange for a stake in Grab, and smaller competitors haven't eaten significantly into Grab and GoTo's market share in Indonesia and Singapore. Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara has been considering a role in the combination, possibly helping to assuage concerns in the government resulting from the sale of the national tech champion, Bloomberg News reported last week. A potential sale of GoTo has sparked worries among Indonesia's political leadership about the loss of independence and developer and engineer jobs. Some have also expressed concerns that ride-hailing and food-delivery prices would rise if Grab becomes dominant in a tough economy where consumers are already facing hardship. Grab, the largest of South-east Asia's ride-hailing and delivery firms, has been locked in fierce competition with GoTo for almost a decade. The Singapore-based company is the leading provider in its home market and countries including Malaysia and Thailand. While the companies' rivalry has weighed on their efforts to reach consistent profitability, they have benefited from user growth in the emerging economies they operate in. On-demand transactions – including meal delivery – grew 19 per cent in the two-month period covering April and May, versus a year earlier, Grab said in a separate release on June 19. GoTo has pulled out from countries including Thailand and Vietnam after a fierce cost-cutting drive, but remains a formidable player in Indonesia – the region's biggest market. Acquiring GoTo would give Grab a stronger position in the country of more than 275 million. 'We will continue to maintain a high hurdle rate when deploying our capital, and will have a balanced approach to investing for organic, profitable growth, and be highly selective on inorganic opportunities, in line with our capital allocation framework,' Grab said in its statement. Can Tim Cook stop Apple going the same way as Nokia?

A YEAR ago, when Apple used a jamboree at its home in Silicon Valley to unveil its artificial-intelligence (AI) strategy, grandly known as Apple Intelligence, it was a banner occasion. The following day the firm's value soared by more than US$200 billion – one of the biggest single-day leaps of any company in American history. The excitement was fuelled by hopes that generative AI would enable Apple to transform the iPhone into a digital assistant – in effect, Siri with a brain – helping to resuscitate flagging phone sales. Twelve months later, that excitement has turned into almost existential dread. It is not just that many of last year's promises have turned out to be vapourware. Siri's overhaul has been indefinitely postponed, and Apple Intelligence is no match for other voice-activated AI assistants, such as Google's Gemini. Meanwhile, Apple's vulnerabilities in China have been exposed by US President Donald Trump's trade war. Moreover, it faces new legal and regulatory challenges to the two biggest parts of its high-margin services business. Its shares, down by almost a fifth this year, have lagged behind its big-tech peers, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft. But those are not the most alarming comparisons. In a new book, Apple in China, Patrick McGee draws an ominous parallel between Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, and Jack Welch, boss of General Electric from 1981 to 2001. Like Welch, Cook has made a fortune for investors – when Apple's market value first exceeded US$3 trillion, in 2022, it had risen by an average of more than US$700 million per day since he took over from Steve Jobs in 2011. But McGee raises the possibility that, as at GE, Apple's success may obscure serious vulnerabilities. If that is the case, what can Cook do to avoid the sort of fate that befell GE, Nokia and other great companies that suddenly lost their way? The answer is unlikely to emerge during Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference that starts on Jun 9. Amid reports of upheaval among executives, it is expected to return to its unflashy roots of announcing software updates for its phones and computers, rather than revealing a refreshed approach to AI. Sign Up Sign Up Many would prefer to see Cook work on a new hardware strategy instead. Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson, an equity research firm, notes that the greatest moments in Apple's history have come from the reinvention of what techies call 'form factors': the Mac reimagined desktop computing, the iPod transformed personal music habits and the iPhone popularised touchscreen smartphones. AI looks like it will be another such pivot point. (Eddy Cue, Apple's head of services, recently admitted that AI could make the iPhone irrelevant in ten years.) For now, Apple's rivals have been faster to explore new opportunities. Meta and Google are pinning hopes on AI-infused smart glasses, as are Chinese tech firms such as Xiaomi and Baidu. OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, recently announced a US$6.4 billion deal to buy a firm created by Jony Ive, Apple's former chief designer, to build an AI device. As yet there is only hype to go on, but it has put Apple's lack of AI innovation in the spotlight. Apple's response may seem like dogged incrementalism. Next year it is expected to unveil a foldable phone, following a path blazed previously by the likes of Samsung and Motorola. But Richard Windsor of Radio Free Mobile, a tech research firm, thinks Apple may still have an ace up its sleeve. If smart glasses take off, its investment in the Vision Pro virtual-reality headset, though so far an expensive flop, may be an insurance policy. It could provide Apple with enough expertise in headgear and eyewear to shift quickly to glasses. If so, the company will avoid 'doing a Nokia', he says. Likewise, Apple might make use of this moment of soul-searching to rethink other shibboleths of Cook's tenure, such as the obsession with privacy and the high walls it puts around its family of products. As Ben Thompson of Stratechery, a newsletter, points out, sanctifying the privacy of its users' data has been an easy virtue for Apple to uphold because until recently it did not have much of an advertising business. Yet in the AI era, it has drawbacks. First, Apple's reluctance to scrape customers' individual information makes it harder to train personalised AI models. Apple uses what it calls 'differential privacy' based on aggregate insights, rather than the rich, granular data hoovered up by firms such as Google. Second, privacy has encouraged it to prioritise AI that runs on its own devices, rather than investing in cloud infrastructure. Chatbots have advanced more rapidly in the cloud because the models can be bigger (awkwardly, this led Apple to offer some users of Apple Intelligence an opt-in to ChatGPT). In order to overcome its AI deficiencies, it could splash out on buying a builder of cloud-based large language models (LLMs). But it has left it quite late. OpenAI's deal with Ive makes it less likely to ally with Apple. Anthropic is close to Amazon, which has a big stake in the maker of the Claude family of LLMs. Other options are either Chinese or too small for a company of Apple's heft. Alternatively, it could relax its 'walled garden' ethos of seamless integration, and partner with a variety of third-party LLMs, as Motorola, owned by the Chinese firm Lenovo, has done. Third-party voice-activated chatbots could quickly solve its Siri problem, giving renewed reason for people to upgrade their phones. The likelihood is that Cook will do nothing radical. As Moffett puts it, his tenure has been marked by the steady ascendancy of 'process over product'. Instead of flashy innovations, his hallmark has been metronomic reliability, especially with regard to financial performance. Nor has he any hope of swiftly extricating Apple from China. As McGee points out, even if Apple's final assembly moves to India and elsewhere, the supply chain's roots remain deeply embedded in the Middle Kingdom. Yet this is no time for complacency. Whatever the ups and downs of AI – as Google has recently shown, yesterday's losers can quickly become today's winners – nothing turns investors off quicker than a profits shock. That is what makes the threats to Apple's services business so serious. The most striking risk is that the judge who declared Google a monopolist may order it to suspend payments to Apple that make Google's search engine the default on the iPhone. The payments, which are partly for exclusivity and partly a revenue-sharing arrangement, generate about US$20 billion a year for Apple (last year its services revenue was US$96 billion). David Vogt of UBS Investment Bank says that, if the judge imposes a ban on the exclusivity part of the payments, it could cut Google's revenues by about US$10 billion. 'I'm getting calls every day of, 'What will the market do to Apple stock if that happens?'' he says. Google has vowed to appeal. Another looming threat is to app-store revenues, which are under scrutiny as a result of the European Union's Digital Markets Act, as well as from an antitrust lawsuit brought by Epic, a gaming firm, against Apple in America. Bank of America estimates that app-store commissions generate US$31 billion a year of high-margin services revenue for Apple. If app developers steer customers away from Apple's app store as a result of the rulings, it could clobber the lucrative cash cow. Services have been the brightest spot of Cook's tenure in recent years, helping to mitigate stagnation in iPhone sales. It will certainly be a blow if the line of business suffers.
