Ryan Reynolds promises to ‘get down in the mud' in new nature documentary

Rhyl Journal3 days ago

The Canada-born actor, 48, who co-owns Welsh football club Wrexham, will narrate the tongue-in-cheek show Underdogs for National Geographic.
In the five-part series, Reynolds will speak about the outcasts of the animal kingdom, while wildlife footage shows the unconventional hygiene choices and unsavoury courtship rituals of some of the world's strangest animals.
The trailer, released on Tuesday, features Green Day's new song Underdog written for the show.
In the teaser, Reynolds says: 'For over 135 years, National Geographic has gone to the ends of the Earth, to bring you the most stunning footage of nature ever put to film.
'But enough with the top of the food chain, it's time to shift our focus to the bottom.'
He adds that he is going past 'nature's glory hogs', while footage of typical animals that appear in wildlife documentaries is shown, to 'get down in the mud, with nature's bench-warmers, not the superheroes, the superzeroes'.
The show promises to show a cave in New Zealand, which glows thanks to millions of mucus-coated grubs, as well as a goose which lays its eggs on the top of a cliff and a koala that feeds its baby poo.
It will also feature music from British composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who has written accompaniments for the Chronicles Of Narnia films, the Shrek franchise, and Gladiator II.
The actor also said: 'Getting to work with National Geographic on Underdogs was a dream come true – mostly because I can finally watch a project of ours with my children.
'Technically, they saw 'Deadpool & Wolverine' but I don't think they absorbed much while covering their eyes and ears and screaming for two hours.
'We're so proud to elevate the unsung heroes of the natural world to the top of the entertainment food chain and can't wait for everyone to see.'
Reynolds is an executive producer on the series through his company Maximum Effort, which has worked on the Deadpool films, and the FX football docu-series Welcome To Wrexham – which has run for four series and earned eight Emmys.
The Hollywood star also released one of the biggest blockbusters of 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine, which saw the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and their characters become integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Underdogs starts airing from Wednesday June 18 at 9pm on National Geographic Wild UK, and will then come to Disney+ soon.

‘I found London's coolest party house with a fascinating past'

Having stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world in my time, it takes a lot for one to leave me truly wowed, but that's exactly what I found when I stepped inside Henry's Townhouse in London. Unassuming from the outside, inside it's beautiful and unique, and with a fascinating story behind. I admit that I hadn't heard of it before visiting, but I certainly won't forget this hidden gem. Back in the 18th Century, the building, 24 Upper Berkeley Street in London's village-like Marylebone area, was the home of acclaimed author Jane Austen's (reportedly favourite) brother Henry, a failed barrister, I'm told, who helped to bring Jane's works to the public after her death in 1817. It's said that Jane visited her brother and his wife Cassandra here often, and was even rumoured to have penned parts of Sense and Sensibility here (fans of the novel might spot references to this townhouse in the pages). Over the years following, the building fell into disrepair, gradually existing as a run-down B&B until local Marylebone-born-and-raised businessman Steven Collins and his wife spotted its potential and snapped it up. Following an extensive restoration project during which the interiors were thoughtfully overhauled – to appear even grander than they actually would in Henry's day, Steven tells me, as the Austen family wasn't wealthy – Henry's Townhouse opened in 2020 with six bedrooms, two reception rooms and a pantry for breakfasts and meetings. Individual rooms can be booked, as you would a traditional hotel (a must for history buffs or literary fans), but where it really shines is as a single-use venue, which, Steven says, has been used for everything from hen parties and small weddings to London boltholes for rock stars and their entourages playing at the Royal Albert Hall (he if of course too discreet to drop names). It appears nothing is too much of an ask to arrange, as I hear stories of magicians lining the stairs and musicians playing in the baths. The former home of Jane Austen's brother and now a gorgeous six-bedroom hotel or exclusive use venue. The six bedrooms at Henry's Townhouse are all named after Jane Austen's relatives, small but perfectly designed, and individually decorated in sumptuous yet stylish designs. I stayed in the Cassandra room, decked out in soothing powder blue tones and with so many special touches, from the shell-shaped bath draped in curtains and the gilded dressing table to the artwork on the walls and the fresh flowers in bud glasses, plus a big desk should inspiration take you. Lying in the comfy bed at the end of the day underneath the huge chandelier, I felt like I was in Bridgerton. All rooms also have a complimentary minibar and posh snacks, as well as modern comforts such as a Dyson hair dryer and Votary toiletries. Due to its small size, Henry's Townhouse doesn't serve dinner, but breakfast in the downstairs pantry is included in your stay. You're spoilt for choice for dining out in the local area around Marylebone's charming high street though, and the staff are more than happy to help with recommendations and bookings. Rooms at Henry's Townhouse start from £595 including breakfast, and the property costs from £4,950 per night for exclusive use for up to 12 guests.

Tredegar House to host Eisteddfod yr Urdd 2027

The 17th Century house has been called home to some of the most powerful and influential families in the area, with its stunning 90-acre grounds making it a perfect site for the Eisteddfod. Llio Maddocks, the Urdd's Art and Eisteddfod Director says: 'I am so pleased to see Newport City Council and the whole of Gwent community's support to hosting the Eisteddfod in 2027. "Tredegar House looks like the perfect site for us organisers. One of the most important elements of Eisteddfod yr Urdd is the fact that it's a travelling festival and therefore visit areas that have never hosted the festival before. "I very much look forward to working with the Council and local community over the next two years to provide valuable experiences for children and young people of the area.' 'We are delighted that Tredegar House has been confirmed as the venue for Eisteddfod yr Urdd's first ever visit to Newport in 2027', said Councillor Emma Corten, Newport City Council's cabinet member for culture and communications. 'Hosting more major events and increasing the use of Welsh in our cultural offer are both parts of our long-term cultural strategy for the city. Eisteddfod yr Urdd, one of Wales's largest cultural events, will help us as we work to deliver on both of those goals. 'We're keen to involve as many businesses and community groups, both in the city centre and across Newport, as possible in the celebrations, so that as many people as possible experience the buzz of a major cultural event. We cannot wait for our city to play host to visitors from across Wales and beyond in two years' time.' Lizzie Smith Jones, National Trust Cymru General Manager for Tredegar House said: 'We're incredibly proud to be welcoming Eisteddfod yr Urdd to Tredegar House and parkland in 2027. It's a huge moment for Newport and our community - we're looking forward to playing our part in the celebrations of Welsh language, culture and creativity, and championing Wales' future generations.'
