If you've ever been riding the G train attempting to scroll through a frozen feed, we've got good news: The MTA just announced that cell service is coming to major portions of the G line —and it's arriving sooner than you might think.
At Wednesday's MTA committee meeting, officials confirmed that the long-promised expansion of underground cell coverage is picking up steam. Riders on the northern stretch of the G, from Court Square to Hoyt-Schermerhorn, can expect 5G cell service as early as this fall. It's all part of the MTA's broader goal of bringing connectivity to the 418-mile subway system, one tunnel at a time.
This latest rollout will also include the 4 and 5 lines between Bowling Green in Manhattan and Borough Hall in Brooklyn and, eventually, future coverage on the A and C lines. As for the G, the recent signal upgrades and service shutdowns weren't just annoying—they laid the groundwork for a more connected ride.
And here's the kicker: all of this is being done at no cost to the public.
The work is being handled by Boldyn Networks (formerly Transit Wireless), the same company responsible for outfitting all 281 underground stations with Wi-Fi and cellular service back in the 2010s. Through a public-private partnership, Boldyn is footing the $600 million infrastructure bill and will recoup its investment by keeping any revenue from the wireless network it builds. In total, the full 10-year project is expected to result in over $1 billion in benefits to the MTA and its riders.
So when's the whole system going online? Technically, by 2032—but with each capital project, Boldyn is piggybacking on MTA tunnel access to install cables in tandem with other construction work. Think of it as multitasking, but for infrastructure.
'This is being done because a private company—the same company that outfitted the stations to have cell service—now is moving forward with us to put cell connectivity in the tunnels in between the stations,' MTA Chair Janno Lieber told amNewYork.
Though one downside? 'Some people complain they have to listen to too many domestic arguments,' Lieber joked. Still, we'll take that over another dead zone.

As lobbying ramped ahead of their £15bn mega-merger, Vodafone and Three embarked on a campaign of self-denigration. Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone's chief executive, repeatedly criticised Europe's lacklustre 5G rollout. Three boss Robert Finnigan went further, saying his company's investment in its mobile network was 'unsustainable' without the tie-up. Talking down Britain's 5G coverage was a bold strategy for two of the country's four mobile operators. The deal has been bogged down by protracted regulatory scrutiny and as Vodafone tussled with CK Hutchison, Three's owner, for control of their new joint venture. Two years after it was first announced, however, the tie-up has finally completed and the strategy appears to have paid off. Now, bosses are promising a revolution for UK mobile customers. When Vodafone and Three first unveiled plans to merge to create the UK's largest network operator, they insisted the deal was 'great for customers, great for the country and great for competition'. Yet the announcement, which itself followed more than a year of private discussions, marked only the beginning of a drawn-out regulatory process that would last 18 months. At the heart of investigations were fears that the merger, which reduces the number of UK operators from four to three, would push up prices for consumers. Regulators have historically been sceptical about telecoms consolidation and a previous attempt to merge Three with O2 was blocked by the European Commission in 2016. Unions and China-sceptic MPs also sounded the alarm about granting Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison access to sensitive government contracts, as well as accusations of union-busting at the conglomerate's other companies including Felixstowe port. Ultimately, in December, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) gave the green light to the deal provided the two companies agreed to a number of legally binding commitments, including a pledge to invest billions into their combined 5G network, as well as guarantees around some tariffs and wholesale rates for so-called MVNOs that piggyback off major networks. Matthew Howett, the founder and chief executive of Assembly Research, says the lengthy wait for approval was too long. 'Two years is a long time when you've got operators who are saying that they can't meet their cost of capital and that they're in trouble and need to do something otherwise they're going to exit the market and consumers suffer,' he says. However, he adds that the companies 'probably benefited from the delay because of the fact we got a new government that was focused on investment and growth and a realisation from the CMA that coverage isn't where it should be'. Karen Egan, at Enders Analysis, argues that the regulatory process 'was always going to be thus'. 'It's a big move and I think the whole country needs to feel like it's been properly thought through,' she says. 'They came to the right decision and it's good that they took their time.' Yet even after CMA approval was secured, the deal was beset by further delays. The two companies had been aiming to complete by May 1 and a glitzy launch event was organised on a rooftop near Liverpool Street, but this deadline was pushed back. The source of the delay, according to multiple industry sources, was CK Hutchison. One describes it as a 'Hutch roadblock', while another claims the company, which was founded by Li Ka-shing, Hong Kong's richest man, was making aggressive demands at the negotiating table. Even joint ventures must navigate self-interest Analysts say there is likely to have been a tussle for power and control between the two partners as the merger talks drew to a close. Vodafone will initially hold a 51pc stake in the joint venture and has the option of taking full control of the combined business after three years. However, the Hong Kong company is likely to have been keen to hold its ground. 'I suppose it's inevitable in these joint ventures that everyone's going to be looking after their own self-interest, particularly as the final touches are put to the agreement,' says Egan. 'I imagine that [CK Hutchison] are especially nervous about being easily shunted into the background unless they're on the front foot and protecting their interests at every opportunity.' Another potential source of conflict, according to analysts, could be costs. The newly merged company is expected to pay around £250m to Vodafone Group for central functions such as customer service – a figure that CK Hutchison will probably be keen to cut. The delay caused frustration within Vodafone, particularly as the company gears up for its two major summer sponsorships – Glastonbury and Wimbledon. Despite its painful genesis, however, most in the industry are optimistic about the transformative effects of the merger and its ability to unlock network investment for 27m customers. Most crucial is the prospect of an improvement to the UK's shoddy mobile coverage, which has been a key priority of the Labour Government under telecoms minister Chris Bryant, as well as regulator Ofcom. 'Clearly the UK's coverage position is not where it should be relative to other countries,' says Howett. Della Valle has insisted that the commitment to invest £11bn over the next decade will ensure not-spots are eliminated, though bosses have cautioned that customers are unlikely to see an instant improvement. However, the investment pledge is a first for the industry, and questions remain about how effectively Ofcom will be able to monitor and enforce it. What's more, could the commitment soon become a millstone around the new company's neck? At BT, the deal will mark a step change as the new company leapfrogs EE to become Britain's largest network. The former monopoly is viewed by analysts as a 'relative loser' from the deal, so is likely to step up its own network investment. Executives are also considering the launch of a new value mobile brand to beef up the company's offering at the lower end of the market. Publicly, however, BT is sanguine. Speaking to reporters last week, BT boss Allison Kirkby said: 'We're well ahead of the rest, so we don't feel the need to change our current plans.' Kester Mann, an analyst at CCS Insight, says the merger 'cements one of the most important structural changes in the history of UK mobile'. But he adds: 'The merging parties have little time to celebrate. Now, the hard work really begins as they set about implementing the many connectivity improvements they've long promised. 'For many UK mobile users that have struggled for too long with poor signal, the upgrades can't come soon enough.'

VODAFONE has completed its £15billion mega-merger with rival Three UK and pledged to invest billions in infrastructure. The newly-created joint business VodafoneThree said the deal would create a 'new force in UK mobile'. It is now the biggest mobile phone network in the UK with around 27million customers. But the deal cuts the UK's four main network operators down to just three, with the new joint business competing with BT/EE and Virgin Media O2. The tie-up was first announced in 2023 but faced a probe by the competition watchdog, which was worried about the negative effect on consumers. The Competition and Markets Authority feared it could substantially reduce options for mobile customers and lead to higher bills. The CMA gave the thumbs up in December, as long as the two firms agreed to invest billions of pounds to roll out a combined 5G network across the UK. They were also told to offer shorter-term customer protections requiring the merged company to cap certain mobile tariffs for three years. VodafoneThree has pledged to invest £11billion over the next decade to help boost its 5G capability, with £1.3billion being spent this financial year. Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone group chief executive, said: 'We are now eager to kick off our network build and rapidly bring customers greater coverage and superior network quality.' Vodafone owns 51 per cent of the newly-merged company and, after three years, will have the option to buy the rest. Mr Machin, who has been in the job since 2022, was also handed around £894,000 of fixed pay and pensions benefit for the year, and is in line for a 2 per cent pay hike this year. A BITTER PILL FOR THE CITY DRUG maker Indivior will be the latest big name to abandon London's stock exchange for the US. The firm, worth £1.2billion, moved its primary listing to the US Nasdaq index last year, but now plans to cancel its secondary listing in the City. The company said cancelling the London listing eliminates 'cost and complexity' and better reflects the business. Indivior, which makes prescription medicines to treat opioid addiction, generates more than 80 per cent of its revenues in the US. It is based there, and its London listing only comes from being spun out of UK consumer goods giant Reckitt. Losing another big name will be another big blow to the London Stock Exchange. Russ Mould, investment director of finance experts AJ Bell, said: 'It's another headwind for the exchange operator in trying to reinvigorate the UK stock market. 'The pressure is on to attract new names to the market and keep existing ones.' Last year, 88 companies delisted from the London Stock Exchange or transferred their primary listing. IT'S GONE PLATINUM ANGLO AMERICAN has sold off 51 per cent of its stake in South African mining firm Valterra Platinum — which has started its own share listing in London. Mining giant Anglo retains a 19.9 per cent stake in Valterra, which it plans to sell off in the future, partly in response to fighting off a £39billion hostile takeover from rival BHP. Valterra boss Craig Miller said after the de-merger: 'As an independent company with a new name, we offer an exciting investment proposition.' The production of platinum jewellery is climbing, thanks to the metal now being relatively cheap compared with gold. FACTORY DIP No7 UK manufacturing output has shrunk for the seventh consecutive month, figures show. But May's PMI index, which measures activity at factories, was less negative than April. The S&P Global UK manufacturing PMI survey showed a reading of 46.4, after 45.4 in April. A reading under 50 suggests the sector contracted. Weak demand, trade uncertainty and rising costs weigh on the sector, Lloyds Bank said. But Rob Dobson of S&P Global Market Intelligence said: 'There are signs of manufacturing turning a corner.' MONZO BONANZA PROFITS at digital bank Monzo quadrupled to £60.5million in the year to the end of March as it attracted 2.4million new customers. The UK's seventh-largest bank said deposits grew by almost half to £16.6billion and that a third of its 12million customers now use Monzo as their primary bank. It took £329million on subscription plans, which offer perks with cinema chain VUE and bakery Greggs. Monzo's chief executive TS Anil said the bank was 'just getting started'. RAISING THE ROOF PROPERTY values climbed by 3.5 per cent in the year to May, up from the 3.4 per cent annual figure recorded in April. Prices rose 0.5 per cent month-on-month in May. It comes after they slipped by 0.6 per cent in the previous month, which was blamed on a lowering of the stamp duty threshold. Last month's rise lifted the average house price to £273,427, says Nationwide Building Society.

Vodafone and Three complete £16.5bn UK mobile megadeal

Vodafone and Three have completed the £16.5billion tie-up of their British operations, creating the UK's biggest mobile phone network. The enlarged business, named VodafoneThree, is 51 per cent owned by Vodafone, with the remaining 49 per cent held by CK Hutchison, the Hong Kong-based parent company of Three. It intends to invest £11billion over the coming decade creating one of Europe's most advanced 5G mobile networks, including £1.3billion in the first year. The combined group additionally hopes to deliver £700million of annual cost and capital expenditure synergies within five years. Vodafone UK's current boss, Max Taylor, is the new company's chief executive, while Three UK's Darren Purkis is chief financial officer. The mega-merger was initially agreed two years ago and given the green light by the Competition & Markets Authority last December. However, competition regulators insisted that both firms invest billions in the UK's 5G network and cap prices on their lowest-cost mobile plans for three years. For the same period, they also require Vodafone and Three to offer pre-set prices and contract terms for wholesale services to virtual network providers, including Giffgaff and Sky Mobile. Critics of the transaction, which reduced the number of UK mobile phone operators to three, have expressed concern that it will lead to poorer service and higher prices for customers. Margherita Della Valle, chief executive of Vodafone Group, said: 'The merger will create a new force in UK mobile, transform the country's digital infrastructure and propel the UK to the forefront of European connectivity. 'We are now eager to kick-off our network build and rapidly bring customers greater coverage and superior network quality.' Under Della Valle, the Newbury-based firm has undergone a massive transformation, particularly in Europe, to help slash its debt pile and streamline operations. It has offloaded its Spanish, Hungarian, and Italian divisions, as well as holdings in Indus Towers and Oak Holdings, the partnership that co-owns phone masts provider Vantage Towers. In the company's latest annual results covering the 12 months ending March 2025, its net debt slumped by more than €10billion to €22.4billion even though it reported a £346million operating loss, compared to a £3.1billion profit the prior year. Yet the FTSE 100 business said its net debts are set to rise by £1.7billion following the Three merger. Vodafone Group shares were 0.4 per cent down at 76.6p on Monday morning but have still risen by around 11 per cent over the past year.
