World's richest otaku Elon Musk shares his must-watch anime list – Your Name, Death Note and more
Tech billionaire and Tesla CEO
Elon Musk
is known for many things – building rockets, running electric car companies, and posting wild tweets. But did you know he's also a huge anime fan? In 2021,
Musk
surprised his followers by sharing a list of anime that he thinks everyone must watch.
It all started when a fan replied to one of Musk's tweets about the game Genshin Impact, asking him to name his favourite anime. Here's the anime list Elon Musk shared on X:
Death Note
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ghost in the Shell
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Fullmetal Alchemist
Your Name
All of these are critically acclaimed and have strong fan followings. Many of them are also known for their deep messages, mature themes, and philosophical questions about life, war, identity, and the human spirit.
For example, Death Note deals with morality and justice, while Evangelion explores depression, loneliness, and the human condition. Ghost in the Shell dives into artificial intelligence and the meaning of consciousness, a topic Musk often talks about. The Studio Ghibli films (Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) are magical and thought-provoking, and Your Name mixes love, fate, and time-travel in a beautiful story.
L over Light – Musk picks a side in Death Note debate
One of the most iconic anime Musk listed is Death Note, which tells the story of a high school student,
Light Yagami
, who gains the power to kill anyone by writing their name in a supernatural notebook. He is chased by a mysterious and brilliant detective named L.
When a fan asked Musk, 'Light or L?', Musk answered with a GIF of L. This small reply caused a big reaction from fans, as it revealed Musk's support for L – the calm and clever investigator who tries to stop Light from becoming a god-like killer.
Elon Musk is a true otaku
As someone who often tweets about sci-fi and futuristic tech, it's no surprise that titles like Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell made Musk's list. He even once posted anime-style art of himself holding the DOGE coin in a Lion King-inspired Ghibli-style image.
From supporting AI to building spaceships — and now sharing anime tips — Musk continues to surprise people with his wide range of interests.
So, if you're new to anime and wondering where to start, maybe Elon Musk's list is a pretty good place to begin!

Edmonton Oilers Jake Walman's random act of kindness wins hearts ahead of Stanley Cup final
Photo byWhat started as a routine trip to pick up essentials quickly became a memory the Stephens family will never forget. While running errands with their three kids, the Stephens family happened upon an unexpected surprise in the trading card aisle—Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman, casually browsing like any other shopper. The chance encounter turned magical as Walman not only chatted with the kids about hockey and video games but surprised them with gifts—transforming a regular Friday into something straight out of a feel-good sports movie. Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman buys trading cards for young fans in Sherwood Park Adam and Angela Stephens, along with their three children—Luke (9), Jake (7), and Emma (5)—were simply out shopping when their boys convinced them to swing by the trading card section. That's where they met Walman, who was browsing through cards himself. 'I was just kind of wandering around the store,' Adam told 'And there is Jake Walman picking up a tin of cards. He was just waiting and he started up a conversation, just being a nice guy.' Walman, a known Pokémon fan, noticed the kids looking through the hockey cards and asked if they were Oilers supporters. When they answered yes and shared their favorite players—Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl—Walman playfully asked if they had heard of Jake Walman. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo 'My son said, 'My dad loves him, he was so happy when they traded for him,'' Adam recalled. For young Emma, who isn't into trading cards, he picked out a Minecraft stuffed toy instead. 'I like doing that stuff,' Walman later said. 'I think we're in a position to be able to do that kind of thing and make people's day.' The story—and photo—quickly went viral, turning the Stephens kids into mini-celebrities at their school, Lakeland Ridge.
