When is VE Day 2025 and is it a bank holiday in the UK?

Metro25-04-2025

Thousands of people are set to line the streets in London to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day next month.
The celebrations will cap off a week of commemorative events 80 years after the Second World War came to an end on May 8, 1945.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Royal Family will also be in the audience for the Red Arrows flypast, a Churchill speech performance, and a military procession of 1,300 members of the armed forces.
The procession will begin in Parliament Square, with a recital of Winston Churchill's famous VE Day speech the moment Big Ben strikes noon.
Alan Kennett, a 100-year-old World War II veteran who served in Normandy, will then be handed the Torch for Peace before the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery lead a procession down Whitehall.
Mr Kennett, who travelled to Normandy with the Royal British Legion for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, called it a 'huge honour' and said the day 'brings back so many memories'.
While Victory in Europe (VE) Day is officially May 8 – the date the Second World War came to an end in 1945 – commemorations will kick off on the May bank holiday from Monday May 5.
Celebrators will be able to see the Cenotaph draped Union flags, as well as a military procession from Whitehall to Buckingham Palace.
May day also promises an RAF flypast over London.
That Thursday on May 8, there will be a party at Horse Guards Parade showed live on BBC One.
Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, said the industry is looking forward to a boost from the extended pub hours.
He added: 'As someone with a strong family background in the armed forces, I know how vital it is to honour the legacy of those who served.
'VE Day is not only a moment of remembrance but also an opportunity for communities to come together.
'At such a challenging time for the hospitality sector, allowing businesses to extend their trading hours during these celebrations offers a much-needed boost while paying tribute to our shared history.'
Monday May 5
Union jacks will be draped over the Cenotaph and a military procession will take place from Whitehall to Buckingham Palace.
Street parties will be held across the country on the bank holiday.
Tuesday May 6
The moving display of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, first installed to mark the centenary of the First World War in 2014, will return to the historic fortress.
Wednesday May 7
A Victory in Europe Day Anniversary Concert will be held in Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by the Parliament Choir.
Thursday May 8
A service will take place at Westminster Abbey which will serve as both 'an act of shared remembrance and a celebration of the end of the war'.
A concert will also take place at Horseguards Parade to mark the end of commemorations.
Friday August 15
Marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, a service will take place at the National Memorial Arboretum.
The Royal British Legion will partner with the government to honour those who died in the war in the Far East.
Plus, pubs and bars that usually close at 11pm can keep serving for an extra two hours on Thursday, May 8.
Keir Starmer said of the plan: 'As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the whole country should come together to remember the incredible sacrifices made by the wartime generation and to celebrate the peace and freedom they secured for us all.
'Keeping our pubs open for longer will give people the opportunity to join in celebrations and raise a glass to all of the men and women who served their country, both overseas and at home.'
This is not the first time pub opening hours have been relaxed for major UK celebrations.
Opening hours were extended last summer when England's football aces reached the semi-finals of the Euros. More Trending
The team even made it one step further to the final against Spain – only to crash out 2-1.
VE Day itself, May 8, is not a bank holiday.
Instead the early May bank holiday, May 5, has been officially dedicated to community celebrations marking the anniversary.
These are the upcoming bank holidays in England and Wales for 2025: May 5 – early May bank holiday
May 26 – Spring bank holiday
August 25 – Summer bank holiday
December 25 – Christmas Day
December 26 – Boxing Day

Keir Starmer says 'AI makes us more human' as he unveils new tech tool

Keir Starmer has insisted artificial intelligence 'makes us more human' in a keynote speech setting out his plans to use tech to create a 'better future' for generations to come Keir Starmer has insisted artificial intelligence "makes us more human" in a keynote speech. The PM suggested the tech could help workers spend more time on face-to-face help - instead of spending many hours filling out forms. It came as Mr Starmer said a new AI tool - 'Extract' - will also help speed up planning permission for new homes by scanning hundreds of files in a second. ‌ The government said it will slash 250,000 hours spent by planning officers manually checking documents - freeing up valuable time. Mr Starmer said the tool was already being trialled in councils including Exeter and Nuneaton. ‌ Addressing London tech week, he said: "What it does is take old hand-written planning documents and puts them into digital form within seconds. So jobs that otherwise would have taken hours and hours done in seconds. We want to roll that out across the country." Keir Starmer unveils plan to help one million schoolkids in major tech drive During the event Mr Starmer also said a social worker told him at a No10 reception that AI had helped her concentrate on the "human element" of the job". He added: "I've always said AI and tech makes us more human, which sounds an odd thing to say, but it's true. We need to say it because... some people out there are sceptical. They do worry about AI taking their job." But he added: "I believe the way that we work through this together is critical." Mr Starmer also said youngsters will be able to access more job opportunities in tech under a major drive to skill up Britain. The PM announced plans to help around one million school-age children gain skills in technology under a new TechFirst scheme. ‌ It will help to prepare kids should they want to become AI engineers, computer scientists or data analysts in the future. Mr Starmer has said that within the coming years the Government should be able to "look every parent in the eye" and pledge that tech can create a "better future" for their children. Speaking on Monday, he said: "By the end of this Parliament we should be able to look every parent in the eye in every region in Britain and say 'look what technology can deliver for you'. "We can put money in your pocket, we can create wealth in your community, we can create good jobs, vastly improve our public services, and build a better future for your children. That, to me, is the opportunity we must seize. That's what my plan for change will deliver and, today, I think we're taking another big step towards it."

Every secondary school in the UK set to learn new AI skills

The UK government is launching a £187m 'TechFirst' scheme to equip secondary school pupils with AI skills for future jobs, aiming to reach one million students with learning resources. Research indicates that AI will influence the roles of approximately 10 million workers by 2035, prompting the government to invest in AI education. The TechFirst program includes a £24m TechYouth initiative to provide AI skills training in every secondary school across the UK over three years. Sir Keir Starmer is initiating a government partnership to train 7.5 million UK workers in essential AI skills by 2030, with tech giants like Google and Microsoft providing free training materials. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged that AI is not flawless and can produce unreliable information, emphasising the need for understanding how it works and the importance of future AI legislation.

NATO chief Rutte calls for 400% increase in the alliance's air and missile defense

NATO members need to increase their air and missile defenses by 400% to counter the threat from Russia, the head of the military alliance plans to say on Monday. Secretary-General Mark Rutte will say during a visit to London that NATO must take a 'quantum leap in our collective defense' to face growing instability and threats, according to extracts released by NATO before Rutte's speech. Rutte is due to meet U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing St. ahead of a NATO summit in the Netherlands where the 32-nation alliance is likely to commit to a big hike in military spending. Like other NATO members, the U.K. has been reassessing its defense spending since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Starmer has pledged to increase British defense spending to 2.5% of gross domestic product by 2027 and to 3% by 2034. Rutte has proposed a target of 3.5% of economic output on military spending and another 1.5% on 'defense-related expenditure' such as roads, bridges, airfields and sea ports. He said last week he is confident the alliance will agree to the target at its summit in The Hague on June 24-25. At the moment, 22 of the 32 member countries meet or exceed NATO's current 2% target. The new target would meet a demand by President Donald Trump that member states spend 5% of gross domestic product on defense. Trump has long questioned the value of NATO and complained that the U.S. provides security to European countries that don't contribute enough. Rutte plans to say in a speech at the Chatham House think tank in London that NATO needs thousands more armored vehicles and millions more artillery shells, as well as a 400% increase in air and missile defense. 'We see in Ukraine how Russia delivers terror from above, so we will strengthen the shield that protects our skies,' he plans to say. 'Wishful thinking will not keep us safe. We cannot dream away the danger. Hope is not a strategy. So NATO has to become a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance.' European NATO members, led by the U.K. and France, have scrambled to coordinate their defense posture as Trump transforms American foreign policy, seemingly sidelining Europe as he looks to end the war in Ukraine. Last week the U.K. government said it would build new nuclear-powered attack submarines, prepare its army to fight a war in Europe and become 'a battle-ready, armor-clad nation.' The plans represent the most sweeping changes to British defenses since the collapse of the Soviet Union more than three decades ago.
