Watch Brad Pitt Burn Rubber in ‘F1'

In 'Anatomy of a Scene,' we ask directors to reveal the secrets that go into making key scenes in their movies. See new episodes in the series on Fridays. You can also watch our collection of more than 150 videos on YouTube and subscribe to our YouTube channel.
While the racing is as swift as the camerawork in 'F1,' this particular scene is built on a pause. That moment of stasis takes place during the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2023. Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a veteran driver, has been recruited by the owner of a floundering Formula One team. And Sonny's style is at odds with that of his team principal, Kaspar Smolinski, (Kim Bodnia). Here, Sonny loses a tire and needs to go into the pit.
'So much of the strategy is built around tire compounds,' the film's director, Joseph Kosinski, said during an interview in New York. 'And at this particular race in Hungary, which tends to be a very hot race, you want a harder tire compound that's going to last more laps.'
'But Sonny has a different plan in mind,' Kosinski continued, 'which is to try to create a safety car situation. And in order to have as much control and grip as possible, he's asking for a soft tire because he knows he's going to only need it for a lap or two anyway.'
Sonny asks for the soft tires as he pulls into the pit, but Kaspar insists on hard ones. When the soft tires are put on, Sonny won't move, creating the scene's most tense moment of conflict.
'You get to see the two forces coming together: the team principal, who wants to stick with the plan they all discussed, and Sonny Hayes coming in with a plan of his own that he hasn't shared with anyone, and it makes for this great scene between Brad Pitt and Kim Bodnia.'

Brad Pitt and I don't have a ton in common – we both like "Mindhunter"! – but there is one key difference: I am not a fast driver, and he likes to put the pedal to the metal. The A-lister embraces his inner Ricky Bobby and drives real fast in the new racing thriller "F1: The Movie," which taps into the extreme love for Formula 1 these days around the world. That's something you should get to the movie theaters and check out – if you have a 4DX theater near you, go for that! In addition, there's a new Spielberg film out now (from Destry Allyn, not her famous papa Steven), plus the latest Marvel TV series is streaming, with Dominique Thorne reprising her "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" role in "Ironheart." Now on to the good stuff: See Brad Pitt hit the gas in race car extravaganza 'F1: The Movie' Brad Pitt has been on a nice run of guy's guy roles, and like a really good parallel-parking maneuver, he fits in the driver's seat of "F1." He plays a hired gun recruited by an old friend (Javier Bardem) to help save his Formula 1 race team, proves to be a speed demon on the track and also has to deal with a hotshot rookie (Damson Idris). It's what you want from a "Top Gun" on wheels. (Peep my ★★★ review.) Our resident car guy, Marco della Cava, interviewed Pitt, and the actor looked back fondly on the four months he spent learning to drive real F1 cars up to 180 mph. 'It was just such a high that I've never experienced before,' Pitt says. 'I can put myself back in that car on certain tracks and I'm instantly happy.' Marco also did a piece about why people are obsessed with F1 as well as a primer on what you need to know about the motorsport. Catch Destry Allyn Spielberg's directorial debut 'Please Don't Feed the Children' Last week was all about Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" turning 50, and this week it's his 28-year-old daughter unleashing some scares. Destry Allyn Spielberg's directorial debut, "Please Don't Feed the Children" (streaming now on Tubi), imagines a bleak America where a pandemic affects adults instead of kids, and a group of teens on the run is taken in by a woman (Michelle Dockery) more sinister than sweet. I talked with Spielberg about growing up with a legendary dad and her lifelong obsession with "The Shining." (She wanted to watch it when she was 8, but Dad said no.) "It was the first film that really got me intrigued with just the history of cinema and specific directors," Spielberg says. Her new movie is one of several new streaming flicks to watch this week. I rounded a bunch up for our weekly guide, which also includes the great new documentary "My Mom Jayne" and "The Woman in the Yard." Stream Marvel's 'Ironheart' starring Dominique Thorne In the Disney+ show "Ironheart," Dominique Thorne plays one of Marvel's newest heroes, Riri Williams, a young genius in the Tony Stark mold who's designed her own flying armor suit. Thorne stopped by our New York City studio to chat with my bud Ralphie Aversa about what Riri has to deal with this season, from villainous frenemy The Hood (Anthony Ramos) to her own personal issues. "It's very difficult to go out and rescue a world when you yourself have your own battles that you haven't yet fought," Thorne says. (Also check out a video Ralphie did with Thorne explaining a nagging injury she suffered during a fight scene.) TV critic Kelly Lawler doesn't love the latest Marvel show, writing in her ★★ review that it's "full of feeling but starkly lacking in coherence and intrigue." She's not wrong, and it's a weird continuation of both the "Iron Man" movies and, of all things, "Doctor Strange." (Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer would have been the perfect foe for Riri, just sayin'.) Even more goodness to check out! Director Reveals His Pitch for Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt Movie

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt haven't been on the big screen together since "Interview with the Vampire" in 1994. Although a reunion is imminent, one director is interested in filming a movie with these two Hollywood stars. While at the Mexico City premiere for "F1" earlier this month, Pitt was asked if he'd be willing to work with Cruise again. The Academy Award winner made it clear that he refuses to do any of the wild stunts that we see Cruise perform during the "Mission: Impossible" series. "Well, I'm not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and [expletive] like that," Pitt told E! News. "So when he does something again that's on the ground." Joseph Kosinski, the director of "F1" and "Top Gun: Maverick," knows one way Pitt can reunite with Cruise without risking his life. During an interview with GQ, he revealed that his dream pitch is a crossover between "Days of Thunder" and "F1." That crossover would give fans the chance to see Cruise's character from "Days of Thunder," Cole Trickle, clash against Pitt's character from "F1," Sonny Hayes. "Right now, it'd be Cole Trickle. We find out that he and Sonny Hayes have a past," Kosinski said. "They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on Interview with the Vampire that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?" Even if Kosinski's dream pitch doesn't come to life, fans should expect to see a "Days of Thunder" sequel at some point in the future. "Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible,' Cruise told Today Show Australia. 'It took me 35 years to figure out 'Top Gun: Maverick', so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing 'Days of Thunder' and 'Top Gun: Maverick.'' Vinicius Jr. addresses Real Madrid contract renewal – ‘Want to make history with the team'

Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. was the star of the show in his team's 3-0 win over RB Salzburg. The Brazilian forward scored one goal, set up another, and was deservedly named man of the match. After the final whistle, Vinicius shared his thoughts on the game and, more importantly, spoke openly about his future at Real Madrid. Advertisement 'I hope I can stay here for many years,' Vinicius said with a smile. 'I've always said this is the club of my life. I'm very happy with the coach and everyone on the staff, and I hope I can keep playing here.' His words made it clear he has no intention of leaving any time soon, despite the many rumours that have surrounded him over the past year. Contract extension close When asked about his contract situation, Vinicius confirmed, 'I have a two-year contract left… until 2027,' and stressed again, 'I've always said I want to stay here my entire career and make a great history with this team.' His commitment should put fans at ease after last year's reports of a massive offer from Saudi Arabia, which reached an astonishing €1 billion for five seasons. While that proposal ultimately led nowhere, Saudi clubs are still keeping an eye on the Brazilian star. Vinicius Jr. put on a Man of the Match performance against Salzburg. (Photo by) Advertisement As things stand, a new contract between Real Madrid and Vinicius is almost complete, with only a few minor details to sort out before it becomes official. About the match Meanwhile, talking about the match, the Real Madrid forward seemed extremely satisfied, especially after the criticism he has faced in recent weeks. 'The match left us feeling good. We played very well in the first half, but the second half was a little weaker, but that's normal. We had to pace ourselves for the next round of 16 match, where we can't afford to let ourselves slip.' Furthermore, the Brazil forward also spoke about Xabi Alonso's demands of high press, stating, Advertisement 'It's normal. In today's football, we have to attack with 11 and defend with 11. 'I like to play inside, closer to the goal and provide assists. It's a very similar position to the year of the last Champions League. We're very compact. Understand,' he concluded.
