Muller time runs out fast in Mallorca
Russian Roman Safiullin has upset French fifth seed Alexander Muller 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 in a tight opening-round contest at the Mallorca Open, while Corentin Moutet overcame home favourite Pedro Martinez 4-6 6-3 6-0 to reach the round of 16.
After Safiullin claimed the first set Muller, who has only two career wins on grass, took a two-game lead in the second but Safiullin recovered to clinch it and will next face Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic.
Muller's compatriot Moutet, fresh off his stunning victory over Taylor Fritz at Queen's last week, struggled with frustration in the first set against Martinez, smashing rackets and voicing his anger before losing the opener.
The second set saw a more composed Moutet, who capitalised on Martinez's injury concerns to level the match before sealing a berth in the next round with a bagel in the decider.
Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech beat Bosnian veteran Damir Dzumhur 6-4 4-6 7-5 to next meet Canadian second seed Felix Auger Aliassime while sixth seed Gabriel Diallo defeated Spain's Jaume Munar 7-5 6-3 to book a meeting with Serbian Laslo Djere.
Tuesday's play opens with the all-Australian clash between 32-year-old qualifier Bernie Tomic, playing his first tour-level event for the first time since he qualified for the 2021 Australian Open, and Rinky Hijikata.
At Eastbourne Briton Dan Evans, 170 in the world, battled back from a set down to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic in Monday's first round.
The 35-year-old, who has received a wild card for Wimbledon, triumphed 3-6 6-4 6-4 against the Serbian world No. 49.
He will face American second seed Tommy Paul - the 2023 runner-up - in round two.

Atletico out, but Messi's Inter Miami and PSG through
A late strike from Antoine Griezmann has handed Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over Botafogo, but the victory could not save the Spanish giants from a group stage exit at the Club World Cup. Following Paris St Germain's 2-0 over Seattle Sounders in Monday's other Group B game, the French side finished level on six points with Botafogo and Atletico. However, European champions PSG secured top spot thanks to a superior goal difference, with South American champions Botafogo also advancing to the last 16 after finishing second. Atletico, in third, and Seattle, bottom with no points after three games, were eliminated. PSG will face the Group A runners-up on Sunday, while Brazil's Botafogo will take on the Group A winners on Saturday. Even though they were aware a two-goal defeat would secure them a place in the next round, Botafogo's Igor Jesus and Jefferson Savarino forced Atletico keeper Jan Oblak to make a couple of brilliant saves. Following their shock 1-0 win over Champions League winners PSG, Botafogo defended their ground fairly well throughout a cagey encounter, with Atletico dominating possession but rarely presenting a real threat to goalkeeper John. However, tempers spilled over when Atletico appealed for a penalty after Botafogo's Gregory appeared to step on Julian Alvarez's foot inside the box. Following a VAR review, referee Cesar Ramos ruled out the penalty due to an earlier foul by Atletico's Alexander Sorloth in the build-up. The decision left Atletico manager Diego Simeone furious, with the Argentine storming onto the pitch at halftime to confront the Mexican official. As Atletico made a late run desperately looking for the three goals they needed, substitute Griezmann fired the winner in the 87th minute from inside the box, a bittersweet goal that denied Botafogo a top-placed finish in the group and handed PSG that accolade. For PSG, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in the first half while Achraf Hakimi struck in the second to secure the French club their place in the last 16. At the Hard Rock Stadium, Palmeiras came from behind to draw 2-2 with Inter Miami in front of an electric crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, as both clubs advanced to the round of 16. A tie was enough to send both teams to the knockout round after they entered Monday's match tied atop the Group A standings with four points apiece. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami took a 2-0 lead deep into regulation with goals by Tadeo Allende in the 16th and Luis Suarez in the 65th. But Palmeiras clawed back, with a goal from Paulinho in the 80th and then the equaliser from Mauricio a couple minutes before the end of regulation. Messi, who turns 39 on Tuesday, had numerous chances but did not score despite the crowd chanting his name throughout. Palmeiras finished as winners of Group A and will face fellow Brazilians Botafogo in the round of 16, while Inter Miami take on Group B winners and Messi's former club PSG. In East Rutherford, Pepe fired in the 89th-minute equaliser for FC Porto to cap a wild 4-4 draw with Al Ahly in a FIFA Club World Cup match Monday in East Rutherford. Both teams exited the tournament given the Palmeiras-Inter Miami draw. Rio Surf Pro on hold with big swell expected midweek
Competition in the World Surf League's Rio Pro has been put on hold until at least Wednesday with a big swell in the forecast. After one day of competition, surfers now have two days off with waves of up to three metres expected to arrive at Brazil's Praia de Itauna break midweek. "The surf has dropped quite considerably since yesterday, it's only two to three feet and with very slow sets," said WSL spokesman Renato Hickel. "Some good ones when they do come, but not consistent enough to put an important round in the water. "We know we have a big swell on the way, expecting six to 10 foot waves on Wednesday and that's when we'll have our next call." The women's draw is up to the quarter-final stage, with Molly Picklum and Tyler Wright still flying the Australian flag. World No.3 Picklum, who can take over the rankings lead with another heat win, next faces Arena Rodriguez, who is competing in her first Championship Tour event. The 19-year-old from Peru produced the biggest shock result of the event by eliminating current world No.1 Gabriela Bryan. Picklum is the only surfer in the world's top five to advance to the quarter-finals. When competition resumes two-time world champion Wright will take on local hope Luana Silva for a place in the semi-finals. Australia's two leading male surfers Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing must contest the elimination round. Robinson will take on Indonesian star Rio Waida while Ewing has drawn exciting young Frenchman Marco Mignot. With two more competitions before the Finals-bound top five head to Cloudbreak in Fiji to decide the world champion, Ewing is ranked six and Robinson seven. Sydney rookie Joel Vaughan, competing on his first year on tour, is already safely through to the round of 16 after convincingly winning his heat against Japan's third-ranked Kanoa Igarashi and Brazilan Alejo Muniz.
