My First Day with the Motorola Razr: A Vibrant, Fun Phone with Style

My First Day with the Motorola Razr: A Vibrant, Fun Phone with Style

CNET14-05-2025

It's amazing what a nice shade of green can do for your mood. After unboxing the 2025 edition of Motorola's Razr, I was immediately struck by the $700 flip phone's vivid shade of green -- specifically Pantone's Spring Bud. It's somewhere between the lightness of mint and the medium shade of flower leaves. Even though I usually put my phone in a case, the Razr's "leather-inspired" textured back makes me not want to.
That "fun to hold" feeling may be the most notable thing about Motorola's new Razr line, which gets even more unique with Alcantara fabric and wood options on the $1,300 Razr Ultra. But thanks to the bold color, a cover screen that's just big enough to knock out the essentials, and a variety of half-folded modes, even this lower-cost edition of the phone feels expressive. The Motorola Razr is a breath of fresh air compared to standard rectangular phones that are typically in the $700 price range.
Motorola is quite aware that the Razr's striking looks are a selling point to new customers. The company cited during the Razr's unveiling that 25% of its customers are coming from an iPhone. Since this Razr costs $700, its price is just above value-oriented flagships like the $650 Samsung Galaxy S24 FE -- yet lower than an $800 iPhone 16. And even though this year's base Razr is a refinement of last year's Razr design, it's one that remains eye-catching. I still have a lot of testing to do, but I wanted to share some of my early impressions of the Motorola Razr 2025, after using it for a day.
When the Razr is folded like a stand, certain apps will display information like a video on the top half and the controls on the bottom half.

My day with the Razr
The Razr is easy to grip whether it's open or closed, and having the rest of the phone's body match the green shade makes it feel fun from the start. The Razr also comes in a Parfait Pink color with a similar leather finish, Gibraltar Sea (blue) with what Motorola describes as a "nylon-inspired" finish, and Lightest Sky (silver) that is "acetate-inspired."
The Razr's style and shape made it a fun companion for a dinner out with friends. I kept it folded on the train and used the cover screen to manage my subway directions to a restaurant in Queens. I flipped it open to take a few food and street photos. And I used Moto AI on both screens to look up quick facts as they came up over dinner. All in all, though, one of my friends found the new Razr so cute that she said she wanted to steal it -- but because it's such a pocketable size, she won't get the chance.
I've also enjoyed using the Razr in ways that I simply can't use similarly priced phones from Samsung and Apple. I often attach kickstands to phones for video calls, but with the hinge, I can instead use the phone half-folded like a stand and (in supported apps like Meta's Messenger and Google Meet) have the video call on the upper half with call controls on the lower half. When in this stand mode or partly folded like a tent, the cover screen can be set to show ambient information like the time, while a wave of my hand in front of the phone can activate Moto AI for quick questions.
The back of this Razr has a leather-like finish that feels grippy.

More to come with the Razr
As I continue to test this Motorola Razr, I'm focusing on how functional the smaller 3.6-inch cover screen is. That display is like a "mini" phone and is one of the biggest ways the Razr sets itself apart from other sub-$800 phones. You can set it up to run nearly every Android app, as with prior Razr phones.
The Razr is also the entry-level device for Moto AI, which highlights Motorola's own efforts alongside features built in partnership with Perplexity, Meta's Llama AI and Microsoft Copilot. Moto AI deeply integrates these services into the phone so it can make suggestions based on what's on your screen. Separately, you can still summon Google's Gemini to access the AI services built directly into Android 15.
You can activate Moto AI by waving your hand in front of the screen while the Razr is folded over like a tent.
Mike Sorrentino/CNET
There are a lot of different ideas inside Moto AI for conducting quick research or organizing data. AI is a particularly competitive space right now, and I hope to see if Moto AI's features will help me get the most out of the phone's cover screen.
As a result, this year's $700 Razr gets to dance on two different stages of interest. It could be a nice minimalist phone, thanks to its cover screen that can do more functions than the $800 Light Phone 3. And it could also serve as a refreshing alternative to buying the $800 iPhone 16 while saving significant money over the $1,100 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. I'll be seeing how the Razr fits each method as I continue testing it out.

8 best Father's Day gifts 2025 — here's my top picks as a Dad

Father's Day is June 15, so time is running out to find the perfect gift. If your dad is into gadgets, you're in luck — we've rounded up some of the coolest tech gifts he's sure to love. I'm a Dad and a full-on tech nerd myself, and I handpicked several of these items to feature on TV for a Father's Day segment. Whether your Dad is into movies, video games, golf, or just loves a clever gadget, there's something here that'll hit the mark. From the red-hot Nintendo Switch 2 to sunglasses that stream music and a golf rangefinder so advanced it feels like cheating, these gifts deliver serious wow factor. Even better? Some of them are on sale, so you can make dad's day without breaking the bank. Just don't wait too long—these picks are popular, and shipping deadlines are coming up fast. If your Dad travels a lot, or is just always on the go, he'll love this MagSafe power bank. It packs a 10,000 mAh battery built in and can fully charge on iPhone 16 Pro nearly twice Even better, the 3-in-1 design lets you charge your AirPods and Apple Watch at the same time. And with support for Apple's StandBy mode, it turns his iPhone into a sleek bedside alarm clock when docked. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. For the Apple-loving Dad, this charger will handle an Apple Watch, an iPhone and AirPods. To top it off, it even has a 10,000mAh battery built-in so he can charge all of his trusty gadgets even when there's no outlet. For the price, you can't beat the functionality it offers. Dads who spend a lot of time outdoors, especially those who like to exercise, will vibe with the Chamelo Music Shield. These high-tech shades let you control the level of tint just by sliding your finger over the right arm of the glasses. If you like to rock out while you work out (like me), the Music Shield lives up to its name with its built-in speakers. So you can listen to music without earbuds — as well as take calls — while still being able to hear the world around you. Sunglasses have long been a staple of every kid's Father's Day gift repertoire. These take sun-blocking and inject tons of tech — they have tint-adjusting technology and a built-in speakers that'll make these the coolest sunglasses Dad has ever owned. This is the rangefinder my colleague Dave uses every round — and he swears by it. Here in the Northeast, bad weather often means cart-path-only golf, where you're not allowed to drive up to your ball. That usually means guessing your distance, grabbing a few clubs, and hoping you picked the right one. The CaddyTalk Cube solves that problem. It lets you measure the distance between the ball and the flag without having to walk to your shot first. If your dad plays in similar conditions, this rangefinder will make his rounds a whole lot easier — and a lot more fun. If your Dad is a golfer, this affordable rangefinder has all the standard distance measuring technology he'd expect from a rangefinder, including slope. It also triangulates two points. This means he can see how far the ball is from the hole without requiring him to stand over it, making it perfect for cart-path-only golf rounds. Dads who love movie night will get a kick out of the MoGo 3 Pro outodoor projector. It delivers full HD visuals up to 120 inches using a 130-degree adjustable stand, so getting the right angle is a breeze. With Google TV built in, he'll have instant access to all his favorite streaming apps, from Netflix to Prime Video. And there's 5-watt Harman Kardon speakers built in for surprisingly rich sound. You can also grab the MoGo 3 Pro with a PowerBase stand for $409, which has its own 2.5-hour battery built in — just enough juice for most action flicks. Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube are already built into this projector, making it easy to watch whatever you want. It projects up to 120 inches of screen, so you can get that movie theater feel any time. Add in the Harmon Kardon and you have a perfect gift for the movie-loving Dad in your life. Move over, Bose and Apple. The Sony WH-1000XM6 are arguably the best headphones for Dads who demand the very best sound quality along with top-notch noise cancellation. You're guaranteed to block out the chaos of your commute or the roar of a plane engine plane engine with Sony's real-time noise cancellation system, which leverages advanced processors and adaptive mics. That noise cancelling comes in handy for calls, too. In fact, in our Sony WH-1000XM6 review, we praised the crystal-clear call quality. The touch controls are also intuitive, and you get an impressive 30 hours of battery life with the ANC turned on. These are on the pricey side, but they're worth every penny. These are some of the best headphones you can get. If your Dad wants wireless audio with quality that'll make him feel like he's at his favorite band's concert, the Sony XM6 deliver with excellent comfort, superior noise cancelling and improved call quality. Plus, you get 30 hours of juice on a charge. Does Dad like Mario? Then he'll love it if you can score him a Nintendo Switch 2, which is easily the most sought-after gadget of the year. That's why we have a Switch 2 live blog going, helping people find stock as it arrives. So what makes it so special? The Switch 2 packs a larger 7.9-inch display, improved 4K graphics (when docked) and improved Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically to the console. The game lineup looks like a blast, to, with titles like Mario Kart World. And Nintendo is evolving the gaming experience with GameChat and the optional $54 Switch 2 camera, which lets Dad put his face right in the game and interact with his kids even if they're miles away. Maybe it's not nice to share this one here since it's nearly impossible to find a Switch 2, but if you do manage to get one for your Dad for Father's Day, you'll be his favorite (assuming he likes video games). Just make sure to follow our Switch 2 restock live blog for the latest updates. Give the gift of Dad never having to go on an ice run again. The Anker Solix EverFrost 2 cooler can keep your drink and food chilled all the way down to -4°F. And it can cool beverages from 77°F to 32°F in just 15 minutes. The built-in battery can keep your drinks and other items chilled up to 52 hours, or you can extend that to 4.3 days with an optional second battery. The Anker app lets you control the temperature from your phone, and you can even have different temps for the two zones. Oh, and yes — it has built-in lights, just like your fridge. This cooler can chill your drinks with its built-in battery in just 15 minutes, so Dad won't need to worry about keeping it stocked with ice while he's out on the beach hanging out or hosting a killer BBQ, as Dads are known to do. Its battery lasts up to 52 hours, so he can throw a serious party that doesn't end. The Galaxy S25 Edge is one of those phones you have to hold to believe. At just 5.8mm (0.23 inches) thick and 5.75 ounces, it's the thinnest Galaxy S series phone ever — and easily one of the most elegant designs we've seen. In our Galaxy S25 Edge review, we really liked the sheer portability of this device. You also get a large 6.7-inch OLED display, powerful 200MP camera and latest Snapdragon 8 Gen Elite chip. Plus, Samsung stuffs all the latest Galaxy AI features inside this slim phone. Dad will have to trade off some battery life and do without telephoto zoom, but if design matters most, this is easily one of the most impressive phones of the year. Galaxy S25 Edge: up to $750 off w/ trade-in @ Samsung The Galaxy S25 Edge isn't a cheap gift, but if your Dad needs a new phone and he likes his devices to be thin and light, it might be worth throwing down for the S25 Edge. It's one of the best Android phones money can buy, and right now you can save up to $750 with trade-in.

My Pick for Laptop Shoppers Seeking Tariff Relief: Acer's $700 Aspire 14 AI

CNET's key takeaways The Acer Aspire 14 AI is available for $700 at Costco (with the occasional spike to $750). The Intel Lunar Lake CPU offers good performance for the price and long battery life. The display and design won't wow you. Laptop prices are on the rise -- and the more they increase, the better Acer's Aspire 14 AI looks. When I reviewed it in April, it cost $700 at Costco and was the cheapest Copilot Plus PC I had reviewed. Fast forward two months and it still costs $700 at Costco and is still the cheapest Copilot Plus PC I've seen -- and a great value. Acer cuts the right corners to hit such a low price for the Aspire 14 AI, delivering a well-rounded laptop with modern components. This is no budget laptop with outdated parts. It features the latest Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor (codenamed Lunar Lake) that serves up competitive application and AI performance along with great battery life and a design that doesn't look all that different from Acer's pricier Swift laptops. The Aspire 14 AI's no-frills but future-proofed package makes it one of the best budget laptops of 2025. My experience with the Acer Aspire 14 AI I'm still waiting for the killer AI app to make a laptop AI CPU a must but it's nice to know that when it arrives, you'll have a laptop that's built for it. Thanks to its Intel Core Ultra 5 CPU that has a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), the Aspire 14 AI hits the minimum requirement for Microsoft's Copilot Plus PC platform. Its AI processor can offload AI workloads -- constantly taking Windows Recall snapshots, blurring backgrounds for video calls and producing live translations -- to its NPU, keeping the CPU and GPU freed up for whatever primary task you're working on. Matt Elliott/CNET Future-proofing is always valuable in any laptop, especially so in a budget model where it's not always a given. (You need to be careful when shopping for a low-cost laptop because so many are older models with previous-generation components that are discounted in an attempt to clear out inventory for newer units.) In testing, the Aspire 14 AI hung with the more expensive Copilot Plus PCs I've tested. Its scores on our application, graphics and AI benchmarks weren't all that far off from those of its pricier competitors. Its integrated Intel GPU doesn't provide much in the way of 3D gaming but the same can be said for any Copilot Plus PC as I've yet to encounter one with dedicated graphics. With the Aspire 14 AI, you avoid the budget laptop trap of buying a machine with outdated or soon-to-be-outdated parts. And you also skip past the spectrer of the Creaky Plastic Monster. Many budget laptops have flimsy plastic enclosures but the Aspire 14 AI has aluminum top and bottom panels with only a plastic keyboard deck. And the keyboard deck feels rigid and doesn't bend or flex like the thinner plastic common to other budget models. It's a solidly constructed laptop and you'd have to look closely to tell it apart from one of Acer's mainstream Swift laptops. The specs CPU: Intel Core Ultra 5 226V Memory: 16GB LPDDR5-8533 Graphics: Intel Arc 130V Storage: 1TB SSD Display: 14-inch 1,920x1,200 touch IPS LCD Ports: 2 x USB-C Thunderbolt 4, 2 x USB-A USB 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI 2.1, combo audio Networking: Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 Weight: 3.05 pounds Battery life: 18 hr, 56 min Operating system: Microsoft Windows 11 Home CNET'S Buying Advice The best part of the Aspire 14 AI is getting a modern CPU that delivers the performance needed for the laptop to act as your primary machine and not just a cheap, underpowered second system. And the efficient Intel Core Ultra CPU also allows the Aspire 14 AI to run for almost 19 hours on a single charge while also offering a bit of future-proofing with its AI capabilities. The uninspired design and meh display are really the only items that scream "budget laptop." The rest of the package is more mainstream than budget, including the 16GB of RAM and the roomy 1TB SSD. You are usually looking at 8GB of RAM and either a 256GB or 512GB SSD when shopping for a $700 laptop. If you are willing to spend a bit more, I have a couple of other Copilot Plus PCs you should check out. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 is a winner for its slick and sturdy design and awesome haptic touchpad and the Asus Zenbook A14 boasts an ultralight yet rigid enclosure with a gorgeous OLED display. Plus, both offer even better battery life than the Aspire 14 AI.

I've Been Watching 11 Key Products Daily for Tariff Price Hikes, Here's What I've Found

A trade court has ruled Trump's tariff barrage illegal but the possibility that prices could climb remains real. James Martin/CNET I've been keeping tabs on several popular products on a daily basis for CNET's tariff impact tracker, watching for price hikes amid President Donald Trump's import tax agenda. So far, most prices I've been looking at have remained stable, aside from a notable increase for the Xbox Series X, while a popular portable charger is cheaper than usual for the time being. With all that said, the broader impacts of these import taxes are still on the horizon, unless a trade court ruling against them gets to stay in place. The Trump administration has, unsurprisingly, decried this ruling -- which said Trump had no authority to set tariffs as he has been -- and moved swiftly to request that the Supreme Court strike it down. We'll see how that ultimately plays out but, for now, the possibility that the president's tariff policies will lead to price hikes remains likely. That's why I'm continuing to monitor several key products you might want or need to buy soon, to keep track of the potential tariff impacts. CNET Tariff Tracker Index Above, you can check out a chart with the average price of the 11 products included in this piece over the course of 2025. This will help give you a sense of the overall price changes and fluctuations going on. Further down, you'll be able to check out charts for each individual product being tracked. We'll be updating this article regularly as prices change. It's all in the name of helping you make sense of things so be sure to check back every so often. For more, check out CNET's guide to whether you should wait to make big purchases or buy them now and get expert tips about how to prepare for a recession. Now Playing: Should You Buy Now or Wait? Our Experts Weigh In on Tariffs 09:42 Methodology We're checking prices daily and will update the article and the relevant charts right away to reflect any changes. The following charts show a single bullet point for each month, with the most recent one labeled "Now" and showing the current price. For the past months, we've gone with what was the most common price for each item in the given month. In most cases, the price stats used in these graphs were pulled from Amazon using the historical price-tracker tool Keepa. For the iPhones, the prices come from Apple's official materials and are based on the 128-gigabyte base model of the latest offering for each year: the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. For the Xbox Series X, the prices were sourced from Best Buy using the tool PriceTracker. If any of these products happen to be on sale at a given time, we'll be sure to let you know and explain how those price drops differ from longer-term pricing trends that tariffs can cause. The 11 products we're tracking Mostly what we're tracking in this article are electronic devices and digital items that CNET covers in depth, like iPhones and affordable 4K TVs -- along with a typical bag of coffee, a more humble product that isn't produced in the US to any significant degree. The products featured were chosen for a few reasons: Some of them are popular and/or affordable representatives for major consumer tech categories, like smartphones, TVs and game consoles. Others are meant to represent things that consumers might buy more frequently, like printer ink or coffee beans. Some products were chosen over others because they are likely more susceptible to tariffs. Some of these products have been reviewed by CNET or have been featured in some of our best lists. Below, we'll get into more about each individual product, and stick around till the end for a rundown of some other products worth noting. iPhone 16 The iPhone is the most popular smartphone brand in the US, so this was a clear priority for price tracking. The iPhone has also emerged as a major focal point for conversations about tariffs, given its popularity and its susceptibility to import taxes because of its overseas production, largely in China. Trump has reportedly been fixated on the idea that the iPhone can and should be manufactured in the US, an idea that experts have dismissed as a fantasy. Estimates have also suggested that a US-made iPhone would cost as much as $3,500. Something to note about this graph: The price listed is the one you'll see if you buy your phone through a major carrier. If you, say, buy direct from Apple or Best Buy without a carrier involved, you'll be charged an extra $30, so in some places, you might see the list price of the standard iPhone 16 listed as $830. Apple has made several moves this year to protect its prices in the US as much as possible, like flying in bulk shipments of product ahead of the tariffs taking effect and working to move production for the American market from China to India, where tariff rates are less severe. This latter move provoked a response from Trump, given his noted fixation on the iPhone, saying last week that he "had a little problem" with Tim Cook over the move, claiming without evidence that the Apple CEO pledged to bring more manufacturing to the US. Cook and others close to the company for years say that the supply chains for its products are too complex to move manufacturing entirely to the US. This week, Trump further threatened a 25% penalty rate against Apple products if it did not move manufacturing to the US. How that will play out is still unclear, but notably, foreign-made iPhones with 25% tax would still probably be much cheaper than iPhones predominantly made in the US. Duracell AA batteries A lot of the tech products in your home might boast a rechargeable energy source but individual batteries are still an everyday essential and I can tell you from experience that as soon as you forget about them, you'll be needing to restock. The Duracell AAs we're tracking are some of the bestselling batteries on Amazon. Samsung DU7200 TV Alongside smartphones, televisions are some of the most popular tech products out there, even if they're an infrequent purchase. This particular product is a popular entry-level 4K TV and was CNET's pick for best overall budget TV for 2025. Unlike a lot of tech products that have key supply lines in China, Samsung is a South Korean company so it might have some measure of tariff resistance. Xbox Series X Video game software and hardware are a market segment expected to be hit hard by the Trump tariffs. Microsoft's Xbox is the first console brand to see price hikes -- the company cited "market conditions" along with the rising cost of development. Most notably, this included an increase in the price of the flagship Xbox Series X, up from $500 to $600. Numerous Xbox accessories also were affected and the company also said that "certain" games will eventually see a price hike from $70 to $80. Initially, we were tracking the price of the much more popular Nintendo Switch as a representative of the gaming market. Nintendo has not yet hiked the price of its handheld-console hybrid and stressed that the $450 price tag of the upcoming Switch 2 has not yet been inflated because of tariffs. Sony, meanwhile, has so far only increased prices on its PlayStation hardware in markets outside the US. AirPods Pro 2 The latest iteration of Apple's wildly popular true-wireless earbuds are here to represent the headphone market. Much to the chagrin of the audiophiles out there, a quick look at sales charts on Amazon shows you just how much the brand dominates all headphone sales. Earlier in the year, they tended to hover around $199 on the site, a notable discount from its $249 list price. In the past month, however, its gotten closer to that price on Amazon, so if you're looking to buy a pair, you might want to consider doing it sooner rather than later. HP 962 CMY printer ink This HP printer ink includes cyan, magenta and yellow all in one product and recently saw its price jump from around $72 -- where it stayed for most of 2025 -- to $80, which is around its highest price over the last five years. We will be keeping tabs to see if this is a long-term change or a brief uptick. This product replaced Overture PLA Filament for 3D printers in this piece, but we're still tracking that item. Anker 10,000-mAh, 30-watt power bank Anker's accessories are perennially popular in the tech space and the company has already announced that some of its products will get more expensive as a direct result of tariffs. This specific product has also been featured in some of CNET's lists of the best portable chargers. While the price has remained steady throughout the year, it is currently on sale for $13, or 50% off, for a limited time. Bose TV speaker Soundbars have become important purchases, given the often iffy quality of the speakers built into TVs. While not the biggest or the best offering in the space, the Bose TV Speaker is one of the more affordable soundbar options out there, especially hailing from a brand as popular as Bose. This product has been one of the steadiest on this list in terms of price throughout the year, but it's currently on sale for $199, potentially as part of Amazon's Memorial Day sale. So, if you're looking for an affordable, tariff-free TV speaker, now might be the time. Oral-B Pro 1000 electric toothbrush They might be a lot more expensive than their traditional counterparts but electric toothbrushes remain a popular choice for consumers because of how well they get the job done. I know my dentist won't let up on how much I need one. This particular Oral-B offering was CNET's overall choice for the best electric toothbrush for 2025. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook Lenovo is notable among the big laptop manufacturers for being a Chinese company making its products especially susceptible to Trump's tariffs. Starbucks Ground Coffee (28-ounce bag) Coffee is included in this tracker because of its ubiquity -- I'm certainly drinking too much of it these days -- and because it's uniquely susceptible to Trump's tariff agenda. Famously, coffee beans can only be grown within a certain distance from Earth's equator, a tropical span largely outside the US and known as the "Coffee Belt." Hawaii is the only part of the US that can produce coffee beans, with data from USAFacts showing that 11.5 million pounds were harvested there in the 2022-23 season -- little more than a drop in the mug, as the US consumed 282 times that amount of coffee during that period. Making matters worse, Hawaiian coffee production has declined in the past few years. All that to say: Americans get almost all of their coffee from overseas, making it one of the most likely products to see price hikes from tariffs. Other Products As mentioned before, we occasionally swap out products with different ones that undergo notable price shifts. Here are some things no longer featured above, but that we're still keeping an eye on: Nintendo Switch: The baseline handheld-console hybrid has held steady around $299 most places -- including Amazon impending release of the Switch 2 remains to be seen. This product was replaced above with the Xbox Series X. impending release of the Switch 2 remains to be seen. This product was replaced above with the Xbox Series X. Overture PLA 3D printer filament: This is a popular choice on Amazon Here are some products we also wanted to single out that haven't been featured with a graph yet: Razer Blade 18 (2025), 5070 Ti edition: The latest revision of Razer's largest gaming laptop saw a $300 price bump recently, with the base model featured an RTX 5070 Ti graphics card now priced at $3,500 ahead of launch, compared to the $3,200 price announced in February. While Razer has stayed mum about the reasoning, it did previously suspend direct sales to the US as Trump's tariff plans were ramping up in April.
