Law student suspended for 6 months for links with suspected Urban Naxal
Nagpur: A final-year law student with an elite Nagpur law school has been suspended for six months after she was allegedly found in a hotel room with suspected Urban Naxal Rejas Sydeek, recently arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Her writ petition in the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, challenging the suspension, was withdrawn on Tuesday after Justice Pravind Patil refused interim relief.
The high court noted that the university's campus disciplinary committee had completed its inquiry on May 22 and promptly informed the student the next day. "Since the petitioner has opted to pursue the statutory appeal, the writ petition is permitted to be withdrawn to prosecute the appeal before the competent authority," Justice Patil observed while disposing of the matter.
Represented by Advocate Raju Kadu, the student argued her suspension during the ongoing semester examinations was academic prejudice and the university had violated principles of natural justice under its code of conduct. However, university counsel Kuldeep Mahalle countered that the disciplinary inquiry was conducted fairly and adhered to procedural safeguards.
Additional government pleader Sangeeta Jachak, appearing for the state on behalf of Lakadganj Police, said the matter was purely administrative and opposed any relief.

The student had been suspended on May 10, debarred from academic and non-academic activities, after reportedly failing to provide satisfactory answers about her presence with Sydeek, who is currently in the custody of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad.
The university also cited her social media activity, including a post that appeared to challenge the govt stance on Operation Sindoor.
During an earlier hearing on May 17, Justice Rohit Joshi had declined interim relief, observing the suspension was an administrative measure and judicial intervention was not warranted at that stage.
The high court took on record the university's communication dated May 23, outlining the decision to suspend the student. Advocate Kadu did not dispute that the inquiry had concluded and confirmed the student had filed a statutory appeal under the varsity's redressal of grievances rules.
At the last hearing, the law school informed the court that if the student's appeal succeeded, she would be permitted to take special examinations before results were announced early July.
Sydeek, with whom the student was allegedly found, is under investigation for suspected anti-national activities and conspiracy to wage war against the country. Sources said Sydeek was tracked to a Nagpur hotel, following an intelligence alert, prompting scrutiny of the student's activities and associations.
KEY TAKEAWAYS OF HC RULING:
University disciplinary committee completed inquiry on May 22, 2025, and informed the student the next day.
Recorded that the petitioner chose to pursue a statutory appeal under Clause 5.2 of the university's redressal rules.
Refused to stay the six-month suspension, terming it an administrative action beyond judicial interference at this stage.
Said the petitioner could withdraw her writ petition and pursue the appeal

Chhattisgarh: Husband plots wife's murder after watching over 150 crime shows, paid Rs 60,000 contract to killer
RAIPUR: A govt employee was arrested in Balod district for murder of his wife- a school teacher- after meticulously planning the crime by watching 150 episodes of crime shows on internet how to kill and erase evidence. The murder initially appeared to be a road accident when the victim was returning home from school on Mar 22 and got hit down by a Bolero vehicle. But the digital footprints of the husband got police to a breakthrough. The man had hired people as contract killers. Police revealed the chilling incident in Balod district, after arrest of an assistant engineer in the electricity department. The incident dates back to March 22, when Barkha Vasnik, a lecturer at a private school, died following what appeared to be a scooter accident near a temple on Manpur Road in the Dallirajhara region. Her friend Mathura Mandavi, who was riding pillion, was seriously injured. At first glance, it seemed like a tragic hit-and-run. But suspicions raised by Barkha's family, especially her sister Priyanka Dahar, led police to reinvestigate the case — this time treating it as potential murder. The truth that emerged was more disturbing than anyone had imagined. Digital Trail Led to the Killer Balod SP Yogesh Patel and CSP Chitra Verma, began combing through digital evidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo They uncovered a stunning digital footprint: Barkha's husband, Shishpal Vasnik, had been extensively watching crime content on YouTube and searching 'how to commit murder,' 'ways to destroy evidence,' and 'fool police investigations.' 'His phone and Google search history were damning, but it was his attempt to manipulate his location data that truly exposed his involvement. On the day of the murder, Shishpal handed his phone to a colleague and a driver with instructions to make random calls from different locations — hoping this would trick investigators into thinking he was in Bhilai, the officers said during a press brief in Balod. Contract Killing for Rs 60,000 Investigations revealed that Shishpal had hired a 24-year-old man named Kayamuddin from Supela, Bhilai, and paid him Rs 60,000 to carry out the murder. The two spent days surveiling Barkha's route from school to home and discovered that she often took a quiet, isolated stretch. On the day of the crime, the duo used a white Bolero SUV with no license plate. As Barkha's scooter approached a bend near the Bajrangbali Temple, they rammed into it. As she and her friend fell, Shishpal stepped out of the vehicle and struck Barkha multiple times on the head and back with an iron rod. They fled immediately. The motive, according to police, stemmed from a long history of domestic discord. Barkha and Shishpal were married in April 2016. Within a day of their wedding, Shishpal allegedly began pressuring her for Rs 4 lakh in dowry. The relationship deteriorated over the years, leading to a pending divorce case. Family members allege that Barkha endured repeated physical abuse during the marriage. Records and complaints shared by her sister with local media support these claims. Barkha leaves behind two young children — a son studying in Class 1 and a daughter in Class 2 — now living with their maternal grandmother in Durg. Her brother Shubham Kutare told reporters, 'These children never received their father's love, and now they've lost their mother too.' Police have recovered the murder weapon (an iron rod), the white Bolero used in the attack, two mobile phones, and a list of contacts used to fake call activity. Based on this evidence, both Shishpal Vasnik and Kayamuddin have been arrested and are in police custody. SP Yogesh Patel called the case 'an exceptional example of forensic and field investigation,' highlighting how digital traces and family persistence cracked open a crime designed to be the perfect murder. This harrowing case not only exposes the terrifying depths of domestic violence but also underscores how technology, when misused, can turn into a dangerous weapon — and how it can also help uncover the truth.

‘Entire complexion of Delhi HC is changing': Justice Dharmesh Sharma, who held Kuldeep Sengar guilty in Unnao rape case, retires
Terming it a positive change, Justice Dharmesh Sharma of the Delhi High Court said Friday that 'the entire complexion of the HC is changing' with 'so many outsiders coming'. He was speaking at a farewell organised for him by the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) ahead of his official retirement on June 8, when the court will be on vacation. The remarks come at a time when the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on May 26 recommended the transfer of three judges to the Delhi High Court, including Justice Nitin Sambre of the Bombay High Court, Justice Vivek Chaudhary from the Allahabad High Court, and Justice V Kameswar Rao, who is being repatriated to his parent high court of Delhi from Karnataka High Court. Incumbent Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya too took charge in January after being transferred from the Bombay High Court. As a judge of the trial court and the special court to hear cases under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, Justice Sharma had in 2019 held former BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar guilty of rape of a minor girl in Unnao in 2017. Stating that he will join the Bar 'soon', Justice Sharma said, 'A lot many things are happening, if I'm allowed to say. The entire complexion of the (Delhi) HC is also changing and…sometimes now this high court is looking like an IPL franchise because so many outsider players are coming and (will) come in future. I think it's a good thing…' 'I don't know how to end my note because it is a little emotional for me… I'm thankful… The justice delivery system needs some overhauling, some changes, yes. You may please bring about some objectivity to whatever is happening around… We can do more about it,' he added. Speaking at the full court farewell reference of Justice Sharma, Chief Justice Upadhyaya said on Friday, 'He was deeply involved in the institutionalising of legal aid framework, infrastructure development and streaming of various legal awareness programmes across the Capital…He is known to be a judge of great practical wisdom and he always remained oriented to grant relief to litigants in the court.' Justice Sharma had, in September 2024, dismissed a petition by the Shahi Idgah (Waqf) managing committee opposing the installation of a Rani of Jhansi statue inside the Shahi Idgah Park in Sadar Bazar and sought that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) be restrained from such encroachments. Earning his law degree in 1987, he practised at trial courts in Delhi, mainly in civil matters. He was also appointed as the additional standing counsel of the Centre during this time before joining the Delhi Judicial Services in 1992. After serving a little over a decade, he was elevated to the Delhi Higher Judicial Services in August 2003. From 2017-19, he served as a principal judge of the family court and was later appointed as principal district judge of New Delhi till he was elevated to the Delhi High Court in May 2023. He served as secretary of the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee during 2007-08 and also as member secretary of Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) during 2014-17.
