The Director of ‘How to Train Your Dragon' Talks Beefing Up Gerard Butler's Arc

Director Dean DeBlois and star Gerard Butler reunite for Universal Pictures' live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon out later this week. The filmmaker sat down with io9 to discuss the unique opportunity he and Butler had in re-imagining the role of Stoick the Vast, Berk's Viking leader with staunch Dragon hunting inclinations who's also a single dad to his overprotected son Hiccup (Mason Thames). DeBlois explained his approach to directing Butler in the live-action feature. 'I think one of my aspirations going into this live-action reimagining was to dial up the relationships, the key ones, so Stoick and Hiccup have much depth going on—that push and pull of love and expectation,' he said. '[It's] something that so many kids feel and parents feel when their kid is not turning out the way that they want them to. I wanted to lean into that a little bit more because that just feels very timeless, and kind of travels the globe in terms of cultural specificity.' Butler previously voiced the character in the animated franchise from DreamWorks. Together the collaborators quickly eased back into the world of Berk and finding who Stoick is this time around. 'With Gerard, the moment that he came aboard it was sort of [like] visiting with an old friend because Gerard had such a strong input into who Stoick was in that first movie,' DeBlois said. 'He was like co-creator of the character; finding all of the nuance and the range and the arc that he undergoes was a conversation with [him], rather than us just telling him what he was going to do.' Deepening the emotional relationship between Stoick and Hiccup was a key part of the new film's narrative. 'I think when he was able to step into those boots for real and have that 90 pound costume put on—the five pieces of his beard and wig, which he complained about all the time—he is that character,' DeBlois said. 'All of that weight and burden becomes part of his emotional burden as well, because he's trying to keep this tribe together, keep fighting for the purpose that they came to this island for—yet somehow [also] be a single parent and navigate his way through that with a kid that he doesn't understand,' he added. 'I love that he finds so much nuance and depth in all of those tasks as an actor.' Stoick's arc with Toothless, which comes into play in a big way in How to Train Your Dragon 2, also gets more set-up time, much to the anticipation of fans of the animated franchise. 'We know where it's headed in future installations, but in this movie I really like those moments where Stoick and Toothless have to face off a little bit and to go from enemies to sort of a mutual understanding that they will save one another,' DeBlois said. 'There's a strength there and just the very truthful apology that Stoick makes to Toothless near the end of the movie feels very authentic. Those are not crocodile tears, that's true emotion coming through, the remorse and the regret and the change that Stoick undergoes.' How to Train Your Dragon opens June 13.

James Gunn reveals significant DC updates involving Wonder Woman and Justice League

James Gunn is methodically adding more characters to the new DC Universe. One of those superheroes is Wonder Woman. No plans have been announced regarding Diana Prince … until now. In an interview with EW, Gunn revealed that a Wonder Woman movie is in development and 'being written right now.' The movie is in addition to the previously announced Paradise Lost, an HBO series about the Amazonian warriors on the female island of Themyscira before the birth of Wonder Woman. Recommended Videos During an earnings call last month, Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav revealed that the four most important characters to the DC Universe going forward are Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. Gunn confirmed Zaslav's comments and teased the importance of each character. 'I think that's accurate, actually,' said Gunn about Zaslav's comments involving the four pillar characters of the DC Universe. 'I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn't say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two.' The two characters Gunn and his co-CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran, feel confident in are Superman and Supergirl. Those two characters have movies built around their stories, with Superman opening on July 11 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow flying into theaters on June 26, 2026. Gunn has not cast the DCU's Batman and Wonder Woman. It's unlikely the new Diana Prince will be played by Gal Gadot, who starred as Wonder Woman in the previous DC Extended Universe. As Gunn introduces more characters into the DC Universe, it will inevitably lead to a team-up movie. DC's equivalent to the Avengers is the Justice League, which features premier characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and more. Gunn admitted that a team-up movie is on his mind but said, 'There is no Justice League in this world … not yet.' Gunn then playfully agreed that his Justice League plans would tie into his vision for the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. David Corenswet, who plays the Man of Steel in Superman, called Gunn's plans 'awesome' but will try not to get ahead of himself. 'So if Justice League is in the back of his mind, that sounds great to me,' Corenswet told EW. 'I'll put it at the back of my mind, and we'll see what happens.'

James Gunn Confirms a WONDER WOMAN Movie Is in The Works at DC Studios — GeekTyrant

DC Studios is filling out its core lineup. While Superman is nearly here, and The Brave and the Bold is gearing up, co-chair James Gunn just revealed that Wonder Woman is officially getting her own standalone film in the rebooted DC Universe. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said: 'Wonder Woman's a separate thing, slow moving, but it's moving. We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now.' This upcoming movie will be separate from Paradise Lost , the HBO Max series that explores the political intrigue and ancient mythology of Themyscira. While Paradise Lost acts as a prequel, this new project will bring Diana Prince back to the forefront of the DCU's live-action films. There's no director or star attached yet, and Gunn hasn't confirmed if he's writing it himself, but he has recently hinted he was working on a secret script for a DCU project. With this timing, it doesn't take the Lasso of Truth to make a strong guess. But, we don't know for sure. There are lots of project in development at DC Studios. This also reinforces what Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said months ago, when he said Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are the 'four foundational pillars' of the new DCU. Gunn responded to that during the interview, noting: 'I think that's accurate, actually. I think that he got that from something I said. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two.' Gunn seems confident in where Superman and Supergirl are positioned. Superman dropping soon and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow just wrapped filming. That leaves Batman, whose reboot The Brave and the Bold is still in development, and Wonder Woman as the current question marks, though, that's now beginning to change. As the DCU continues to evolve, we've seen some reshuffling. Projects like The Authority , Swamp Thing , Booster Gold , and Waller have reportedly been pushed back, while others like Teen Titans are suddenly stepping into the spotlight. Now, with Wonder Woman officially back on the board, DC's Trinity is slowly locking into place. Here's a snapshot of the current DCU slate: Creature Commandos (animated series) Waller (live-action series) Superman (film) Lanterns (series) The Authority (film) Wonder Woman (film) Paradise Lost (series) The Brave and the Bold (film) Booster Gold (series) Teen Titans (film) Sgt. Rock (film) Bane and Deathstroke (team-up film) Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (film) Swamp Thing (film) So, while it's early days for Wonder Woman 's return, there is official movement on it, and the path is finally clearing for Diana to re-enter the fight.
