Tamannaah Bhatia to endorse Mysore Sandal soap for Rs 6.2 crore
Bengaluru: Eyeing a further expansion in global markets, state-owned Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), manufacturers of the famous 'Mysore Sandal' soap, has roped in Bollywood actor
Tamannaah Bhatia
as its brand ambassador for a whopping Rs 6.2 crore contract.
However, the state govt's preference for Tamannaah over Kannada actresses has triggered a backlash on social media.
According to a notification issued on Wednesday by the state finance department, Tamannah's contract will be valid for two years and two days.
Sources in the commerce and industries department revealed to TOI that after former India skipper and Chennai Super Kings star
M S Dhoni
, Tamannaah is the second brand ambassador to endorse this iconic soap brand.
Facilitating the contract, KSDL has also been granted exemption under the section 4(g) of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act (KTPP) to make a direct payment of Rs 6.2 crore to the actor.
Several netizens have questioned commerce and industries minister M B Patil, saying: "When there are so many local, young Kannada actresses, why appoint and promote others?"
Defending the govt's choice, Patil clarified: "The move was an independent strategic decision of the PSU board after consulting various marketing experts, aimed at achieving our target of reaching Rs 5,000 crore in annual revenue by 2028."

The minister further said KSDL has the deepest regards for the Kannada film industry.
Picked over other leading names
KSDL officials revealed to TOI that Tamannaah's appointment was done after evaluating several leading celebrities with pan-India influence.
"We evaluated leading celebrities such as Deepika Padukone, Rashmika Mandanna, Pooja Hegde, and Kiara Advani, but Bhatia stood out for her strong pan-India appeal, reasonable engagement terms, and an exceptional digital presence of close to 30 million followers," a KSDL official said.
Turning the tide
Reeling under severe losses until a few years ago, KSDL turned the tide by posting a record turnover of almost Rs 1,786 crore in 2024-25.
"Out of this, a whopping Rs 1,430 crore came from the southern states, revealing our strong regional presence. However, our national market presence is only 6%-7%, and we need to expand this with a strong influencer," explained another KSDL official.
In 2006, KSDL had entered into an agreement with Dhoni, but terminated the contract a year later due to the cricketer's inability to devote the agreed time for promotional activities.

Housefull 5 Box Office Collection Day 4: Akshay Kumar's Film Enters Rs 100-Crore Club
Last Updated: Housefull 5, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, crossed Rs 100 crore in four days. The comedy stars Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan. The madness is paying off… literally! Housefull 5, the latest instalment in Bollywood's most loved comedy franchise, is raking in moolahs at the box office. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, this star-studded laugh riot has officially crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office within just four days of release. Featuring a quirky and colourful ensemble cast that includes Nargis Fakhri, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Riteish Deshmukh, and Soundarya Sharma, Housefull 5's collections have shown steady growth over the weekend, pushing it into the Rs 100-crore club even before it wrapped up its first week. Housefull 5 is still going strong at the box office, even as the weekend buzz settles. On its fourth day, which was a Monday, the film collected around Rs 13.1 crore, according to early estimates. Since weekdays usually see a dip, this drop was expected but the movie still held steady. Sunday was the biggest day for the film so far, with collections hitting Rs 32.5 crore, its highest single-day earning yet. With these numbers, Housefull 5 has now crossed the Rs 100-crore mark, reaching a total of Rs 101 crore in just four days. On Monday, Housefull 5 recorded a Hindi occupancy of 17.62 per cent, a decent hold for a weekday. With this, Housefull 5 has officially overtaken the India nett collection of Akshay Kumar's earlier film, Kesari Chapter 2, which had earned Rs 92.53 crore. Now, all eyes are on whether it can top the Rs 149-crore mark set by Sky Force. Housefull 5 is winning hearts and filling seats, and it's quickly turning into one of the biggest comedy hits of the year. But apart from all the laughs and star power, there's something else that has everyone talking — the film has two different endings! Yep, depending on which show you watch, you'll either see Housefull 5 A or Housefull 5 B. Each version ends differently. Director Tarun Mansukhani spoke about why they decided to do this. He said the idea came up during the writing process, and they thought it would be fun to surprise the audience. 'Sajid (Sajid Nadiadwala) sir had this idea about 30 years ago. And finally, he brought it to Housefull 5. And that was one of the most exciting things for me as a director to make a film with two different climaxes." News18 Showsha gave it 2.5 stars. An excerpt from the review read, 'What makes the movie slump even lower is the music and the number of songs pushed into the scenes and the screenplay to make the film longer. Imagine dealing with an already stretched script, and then you have to tolerate even the unnecessary dance numbers. If this is the standard of comedy we get from the Housefull franchise, then Nadiadwala has to step up and raise the bar in the next instalment." Housefull 5 unfolds on a luxury cruise, where three men — all named Jolly — find themselves in deep trouble. The twist? They're all suspects in the murder of a wealthy industrialist onboard the ship. What follows is a rollercoaster of confusion and mistaken identities in the most hilarious way possible. Housefull 5 is backed by Sajid Nadiadwala's banner, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, and it brings together one of the biggest ensemble casts. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan in leading roles, along with Fardeen Khan, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, and Johny Lever. The leading ladies include Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa, and Soundarya Sharma. Rounding out the cast are Chunky Panday and Dino Morea. First Published:

According to sources close to the production, 'The makers have chosen to stay true to the original Valmiki text, where Lord Ram and Raavan do not encounter each other through most of the epic. Their worlds remain apart, their stories unfolding in parallel until destiny brings them face-to-face in the climactic battle. As per the original narrative, Ram learns of Raavan's existence only after Sita's abduction, and the two never meet until the battlefield confrontation in Lanka." Meanwhile, several media reports also suggest that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the first promo of Ramayana. Starlink Price In India: Elon Musk May Launch Satcom Plans At Rs 3,000-4,200 Per Month, Says Report
Last Updated: Elon Musk's Starlink might commence operations in India within the next two months after receiving its licence last week. Even as Elon Musk-owned Starlink has received a licence for satellite communication (satcom) services in India, speculations are rife about its prices in the country. According to the latest report by Business Standard citing sources, Starlink is expected to launch its services at monthly subscription charges between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,200. Its kit, which includes a satellite dish and a Wi-Fi router, is also likely to be at about Rs 33,000. This is in contrast with the recent reports that indicated that Starlink is expected to debut in India with promotional unlimited data plans priced below $10 per month – nearly Rs 850. Earlier estimates had suggested Rs 3,000-Rs 7,000 per month. These are the speculations, and the exact official prices are yet to be known. According to the BS report, Starlink has so far prices its services at two-three times of traditional telcos in both high-income countries like the US and developing markets like Kenya or Nigeria. 'The company doesn't have much gain by dropping the price to attract more customers as internet capacity from satellite will remain capped," the report said citing people in the know. High-Speed Internet for Remote India Starlink operates a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites positioned just 550 km above the Earth – significantly closer than traditional geostationary satellites – enabling faster, low-latency internet access. The system has already been deployed in over 70 countries and aims to expand to the most remote and disaster-prone regions globally. SpaceX has already deployed approximately 7,000 LEO satellites globally and aims to increase this to over 40,000, enabling internet access even in the most remote and challenging terrains – from conflict zones to disaster-stricken areas. When Will Starlink Satellite Communication Services Start in India? Elon Musk-owned Starlink has received a licence for satellite communication (satcom) services in India. It comes after the government last month had issued a letter of intent (LoI) to the entity. Before launching its services, Starlink still needs approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and must be allocated spectrum by the government. According to a PTI report, Starlink will be granted trial spectrum within about two weeks. According to an ANI report citing sources, Starlink is preparing to commence operations in India within the next two months after receiving its licence last week. Starlink's hardware will be available at retail outlets of telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. In April, Starlink signed pacts with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which together control more than 70 per cent of the country's telecom market, to bring the US satellite internet giant's services to India. Starlink has become the third company to secure a satcom licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), after Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio.
