NBA mock draft: Tahaad Pettiford rises, Johni Broome drops in latest mock from ESPN The stock of Auburn's freshman guard continues to rise as Auburn forward Johni Broome slips in the latest NBA mock draft from ESPN.
The NBA draft stock of Auburn guard Tahaad Pettiford continues to rise ahead of his impactful decision.
Pettiford produced a stellar output during his stay at the NBA draft combine last week, which caught the eye of several NBA scouts. Now that the dust from the combine has settled, ESPN has released its latest NBA mock draft, which bumps Pettiford to No. 37 overall, up two spots from their last mock released post-NBA lottery. In this mock draft, Pettiford is projected to land with the Detroit Pistons in the second round.
Although he continues to climb in the mock drafts, Pettiford is still a few slots away from considering an exit from Auburn. During a fundraising event in Montgomery last week, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl discussed Pettiford's great combine performance and what it would take for him to bolt for the NBA.
"If Tahaad has a first-round contract, I think he's going to go — and he should go," Pearl said. "He won't leave unless he's in a really good spot."
Pearl went on to say that Pettiford will have an increased role with the team next season should he return.
On the flipside, as Pettiford's NBA stock rises, another player's drops. In the latest mock, Auburn forward Johni Broome slipped from No. 37 overall to No. 45. He is now projected to be drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the second round after being projected to be taken by the Detroit Pistons at No. 37 overall last week. According to Jon Chepkevich of Draft Express, Broome posted 6'9 ¼" barefoot, 249.4 lbs with a 7'0 ¼" wingspan and 9'0 ½" standing reach measurements at the combine.
Pettiford has until May 28 to stay in the NBA draft mix, or to withdraw and return to Auburn. The NBA draft begins Wednesday, June 25.

Joe Pyfer: Bo Nickal 'got fraud checked' in first UFC loss

Joe Pyfer: Bo Nickal 'got fraud checked' in first UFC loss Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Joe Pyfer media day interview UFC 316 fighter Joe Pyfer spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters at media day for his featured bout vs. Kelvin Gastelum on Saturday in Newark, N.J. MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Bo Nickal caught a stray during UFC 316 media day. Despite not being on the card, Nickal's name surfaced unprompted by fellow UFC middleweight Joe Pyfer, who fights Kelvin Gastelum on the pay-per-view main card of UFC 316 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) this Saturday at Prudential Center in Newark. Pyfer said Nickal was "fraud checked" in his first professional loss last month against Reinier de Ridder. Pyfer (13-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) mentioned Nickal in reference to some people questioning his chances against Gastelum (20-9 MMA, 13-9 UFC) due to the nature of his first UFC defeat, which came last year vs. Jack Hermansson. "I think a lot of people go off my Jack Hermanson fight, which is fine," Pyfer told MMA Junkie at UFC 316 media day. "But that was my first big show, my first big test, walked into it not 100 percent, I had some things going on. It wasn't my best performance, but I didn't get rocked. I didn't get dropped, I didn't get submitted, I didn't get fraud checked. Let's redefine what fraud checked is. If anyone got fraud checked, we can say it's Bo Nickal. He got finished in his first loss. I lost a split decision basically, three rounds to two." Pyfer feels more than ready to defeat the best version of Gastelum for his second win in a row. He's confident he'll have an answer for everything Gastelum could offer. "I trained for the Kelvin that fought Izzy, the guy that's going to be in your face, the guy that has the cardio to go hard 15 minutes, so I'm training for the best version of Kelvin," Pyfer said "I also thought in my personal opinion that KG has done his better work at 185. He's not going to be as sucked out at '70 obviously. I still think that there's a huge power difference between us. I think that there's a big skill difference between us as far as me being more complete."

Giannis Antetokounmpo next team odds: Knicks, Spurs rumored trade targets for Bucks star

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the biggest domino that could fall this NBA offseason. The Bucks' star has already been the subject of trade rumors despite the NBA Finals not yet starting. DraftKings' oddsmakers have a new betting market up with money already flowing in on a potential trade, although the two-time MVP is still expected to start the season in Milwaukee (-140 odds, 58.33 percent implied). The Spurs are the most likely team to acquire the Greek Freak, with +380 odds (20.83 percent implied likelihood). A duo of Antetokounmpo and Victor Wembanyama would be scary and form perhaps the best defensive big man pairing in league history. Antetokounmpo is a former Defensive Player of the Year, while Wembanyama was a massive favorite to win the award last year before being shut down due to a blood clot issue. There surely will be a massive market for Antetokounmpo if the Bucks opt to field offers for him. The Spurs are followed by the Rockets (+450), Raptors (+800), Mavericks (12/1) and Thunder (13/1). The Knicks, whom some fans had hoped would be in the market, are thought of as long shots to acquire him, coming in at 16/1 odds. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a perennial MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate. Getty Images Betting on the NBA? The Post's Brian Lewis reported that the Nets were hoarding draft capital with Antetokounmpo in mind, but DraftKings views that as a 20/1 long shot. The NBA hot stove will really tip off when the NBA Finals complete and the new league year officially begins July 1.

Phoenix Suns Make Right Call Hiring Jordan Ott As New Head Coach

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JULY 18: Summer League head coach Jordan Ott of the Cleveland Cavaliers looks on ... More against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first half of a 2024 NBA Summer League game at the Thomas & Mack Center on July 18, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Lakers defeated the Cavaliers 93-89. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by) After a long and diligent search, the Phoenix Suns have chosen their successor to Mike Budenholzer. On Wednesday, it was announced that the team would be naming Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott as their new head coach. This decision is ironic for two reasons. First, both Ott and Mat Ishbia (the majority owner of the team, who has become known for questionable decision-making) are Michigan State Spartan Alum (as am I, for the record). And second, so long as he doesn't get traded this offseason, this will be Devin Booker's seventh non-interim head coach since being drafted by the Suns in 2015. That is tied for the most coaches in a tenure with one team in NBA history. Despite the comedic value sprinkled into this situation, the Suns did a good job with this hiring. No matter what anyone tells you, we never know how these things will play out with absolute certainty. So, all we can do is focus on having a good process for our decisions and hope that fate smiles in our direction. In this case, the Suns exercised some good process. As mentioned in the reporting around this signing, the Suns interviewed 15 different candidates for this job. Juxtapose this with the Sacramento Kings, who didn't interview a single other coach before removing Doug Christie's interim tag. Even if Christie ends up being the better hire than Ott, the Suns' strategy was far more commendable and will lead to better results over a larger sample. The Suns also made sure to avoid star-hunting this time around. With their last two coaches (Frank Vogel and Mike Budenholzer), it seemed like they were more amused with their championship pedigree than confident that they were the right guys to lead their specific roster. Ott is on the opposite end of this spectrum. He's a rising star whose best days are still in front of him. Ott was a part of the staff that took the mismatched Cavaliers roster and made them one of the best offenses in the history of the sport. Ott didn't do it all on his lonesome, but it seems like he did play an integral role in their success. Here is a quote from Shams Charania in his newsbreaking story: The key here is that Ott was able to take a team with an imbalanced roster and figure out how to best maximize their strengths while also minimizing their weaknesses. With most of their money tied up in three players who share more or less the same set of skills (albeit to varying degrees) and a bunch of flawed complimentary pieces, the Suns have arguably the least cohesive roster in the league. Ott is the perfect person to tackle this unique challenge. With this said, it does look very likely that Kevin Durant has played his last game with the Suns. So, he won't be dealing with exactly the same core that Vogel and Budenholzer worked with him before him. Still, given their limited draft resources and lack of young talent, this is still quite the mess for Ott to clean up. Regardless of whether or not Ott ends up being the savior this franchise desperately needs, the Suns did a good job with their hiring process this time around, and we need to remember this moment when we are reviewing this situation in the future.
