The Athletic NBA Daily's 2025 NBA Draft preview

New York Times6 hours ago

The 2025 NBA Draft kicks off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on June 25. The Dallas Mavericks hold the No. 1 overall pick after winning the lottery and are set to draft Cooper Flagg.
Dylan Harper, the six-foot-five guard from Rutgers, is projected to go No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs. But after that, the draft becomes much harder to predict.

On the latest episode of 'The Athletic NBA Daily', Andrew Schlecht and Alex Speers were joined by The Athletic's Sam Vecenie to preview how the event might unfold.
Watch the full episode below.
They discussed how the top prospects from last year's class would rank among this year's current crop; the impact that name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights have had on the draft and particularly the depth into the second round; and how NIL has incentivized more international players to pursue the college route.
Andrew, Alex and Sam also explored whether teams might look to trade away second-round picks due to the shallower pool of talent, which teams could be the most aggressive in trading up for V.J. Edgecombe or Ace Bailey, whether Edgecombe, Bailey, Kon Knueppel, or Tre Johnson have star potential, and also looked at the chances of the Spurs moving the No. 2 overall pick.
Later in the show, the trio broke down how Sam's draft philosophy has evolved over the years, analyzed Jeremiah Fears' game and looked at the most polarizing players in this year's draft, compared Khaman Maluach to other recent seven-foot lottery picks with offensive question marks and looked at how Carter Bryant's game might translate to the NBA level.

Bucks' Giannis drops simple response to Stephen A. Smith's ‘underachiever' hot take

The post Bucks' Giannis drops simple response to Stephen A. Smith's 'underachiever' hot take appeared first on ClutchPoints. Giannis Antetokounmpo has been the talk of the past two months, as many are still trying to figure out if he's going to request a trade or stay with the Milwaukee Bucks. While most of the conversation has been around that, another topic was recently brought up as Stephen A. Smith said he would describe Antetokounmpo as an underachiever if he were to not win another ring in his career. Smith's comments had some people fired, and it looks as though Antetokounmpo caught wind of what he said. On his Instagram, he posted a tweet that someone made, saying, 'Giannis went from selling sunglasses on a beach in Greece, to a multi-millionaire who won a championship without having to run off and create a super team. He has over-achieved his wildest dreams and anyone who thinks otherwise is ridiculous.' Antetokounmpo put two '100' emojis and a fire emoji above the comment, insinuating that he agrees with what the person was saying. It's hard to discredit what Antetokounmpo has done in his career, because outside of winning one championship, he also has multiple MVPs and a Defensive Player of the Year award. He's one of the best players in the league today, and nobody can take that away from him. After Smith said that he would describe Antetokounmpo as an underachiever if he didn't win another ring, he tried to explain his reasoning. 'He's one of the greatest players to ever play the game,' Smith said. 'Over the last four years, minimum 200 games, Giannis is second in the league with 30.4 points per game, fifth in the league with 11.7 rebounds per game. Nine All-NBA selections in his career, nine All-Star selections, and top-10 in MVP voting nine times. He has more of that than postseason series wins. That's unacceptable. 'You don't look at somebody that dominant, that fantastic, with that kind of fire in his belly to compete on a night-in, night-out basis, and all you have is one championship to show for it. He's got one playoff series win in the last four years. Not fault; he was hurt a couple of times.' Some of the stuff that Antetokounmpo has been through isn't his fault. Though he hasn't had playoff success in the past few years, it's hard not to see the situations he's been in as far as injuries. When he is healthy, Antetokounmpo leaves it all out on the floor. Yeah, KSI never stood a chance. The popular streamer hit the mat with former UFC flyweight champion Demetrius Johnson, challenging him to submit him in less than one minute. KSI got to choose the position in which they would start, and went with full mount – one of the most dominant positions in jiu-jitsu. Yet, despite the positional and weight advantage, KSI only lasted 17 seconds against the flyweight GOAT. Advertisement You can watch the video of their quick grappling match in the video below: Johnson, 38, is regarded as the greatest flyweight of all time. He defended the 125-pound title 11 consecutive times, setting and maintaining the record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history. "Mighty Mouse" announced his retirement from MMA last September, putting an end to a legendary 15-year-career in MMA. KSI, one of the word's most popular streamers, turned to the combat sports world in recent years. He's specifically been fighting professionally in boxing, and owns his own promotion – Misfits Boxing, which streams on DAZN. Boca Juniors, Benfica draw 2-2 in Club World Cup match that includes 3 red cards, 22 fouls

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Boca Juniors scored twice in the first half and Benfica countered with a penalty kick in first-half extra time and a goal in the 84th minute as the teams drew 2-2 in a heated game the included three red cards in a Club World Cup Group C match Monday. Boca Juniors played in a home-like environment with the Argentine club's supporters making up most of the 55,574 crowd at Hard Rock Stadium against one of Portugal's premier teams. Heavily armed police were present at checkpoints to ensure order for a Boca supporters' group that is extremely fierce and passionate. But, most of the rough action was on the field, not in the stands, as the game included the three red cards — two for Boca — four yellow cards and 22 fouls, including 14 by Benfica. Boca scored on a cross and a corner — both from the left side — in the first half. Miguel Merentiel scored in the 21st minute and Rodrigo Battaglia in the 27th. Just before added time was announced in the first half, a penalty kick was awarded to Benfica by center referee Cesar Ramos after a VAR review on a foul by Carlos Palacios on Nicolás Otamendi. Angel Di María converted the kick to cut the deficit to a goal. Otamendi scored the tying goal on a header in the 84th minute. Key moment Otamendi's front post header helped Benfica salvage a point. Takeaways Boca Juniors, after underperforming last season in the Argentina first division and disappointing in the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, used the support of their fans to fuel them and earn a point in group play. Their second match, against Bayern Munich in Miami on Friday, will prove to be a more challenging game. Benfica, which was imprecise in its play and gave the ball away many times unprovoked, will take on the only semi-professional team in the Club World Cup, Auckland City, which was badly beaten by Bayern. ___ AP soccer:
