Air India crash pushes 2025 toward aviation's deadliest year in past 10 years
The crash of Air India Flight 171 marked a tragic moment for global aviation in 2025, making it one of the deadliest years in recent memory. The Boeing 787, carrying 242 people, went down in a fiery explosion shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, crashing into a densely populated residential area and raising fears of significant casualties on the ground.

So far in 2025, global civil aviation fatalities have surpassed 460, significantly exceeding the decade-long average of 284, according to Jan-Arwed Richter, founder of German aviation safety firm Jacdec. The sharp rise underscores growing concerns about flight safety in what is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous years for commercial air travel in recent history.
He said, 'This year still has more than six months to go, so this could be concerning if this rate of fatal accidents would go on,' as reported by Bloomberg.
After a record year in 2023 with no fatal commercial aviation crashes, the industry has faced a troubling reversal. A series of high-profile incidents in 2025 — including the deadly collision of American Airlines Flight 5342 with a military helicopter near Washington and a Delta Air Lines jet flipping on landing in Toronto — have reignited public concern about the safety of air travel, even in cases where there were no fatalities.
And now the most recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has been recorded as the deadliest air disaster since the MH17 tragedy in 2017. One of the most devastating aviation tragedies in recent history was the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine, which claimed the lives of all 298 people on board, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

According to Jadec's data, in the past decade, the deadliest years for civil aviation were 2018 and 2015, each recording over 500 fatalities. The organization, which tracks aircraft with at least 19 seats or a weight of 5.7 tons, noted that while 2025 is shaping up to be among the most tragic in recent memory, many of the recent accidents remain under investigation.
Ritcher emphasized that the numbers are still within historical norms and reminded the public that airplane crashes 'happen mostly totally at random without a comparability to each other.'
He also urged the media not to jump to conclusions while investigators work to determine the cause of the Air India crash. 'And I want to emphasize the bigger picture here,' Richter said. 'Air travel is and remains the safest way of going from one place to another,' he added.

Champat Rai, the general secretary of the temple trust, granted approval for the opening of Ram Darbar late Friday after a meeting with the local administration. PM Narendra Modi praised the opening of Ram Darbar on his X handle. He wrote: "The birthplace of Lord Shri Ram has witnessed another glorious and historic moment. The holy occasion of the consecration of the grand and divine Ram Darbar is going to fill all Ram devotees with reverence and joy. Ahmedabad: A family journey to the UK for a baby shower ended in tragedy for Yasmin Vora, 51, her nephew Pervez Vora, 30, and his 4-year-old daughter, Zuveriya. "Yasmin, originally scheduled to fly on June 9, extended her ticket to the 12th to travel with Pervez and Zuveriya, who were from Thasra," said Yasin, Yasmin's husband from Vadodara. Yasmin's two sons, settled in London, were expecting the children, and she had planned a 5-6 month stay for their baby showers. Yasin dropped her off at the airport. "Just before takeoff, Yasmin called me, expressing anxiety about the non-functioning AC and a strange feeling, to which I had reassured her it would start," he said. Shortly after, as Yasin drove about 50 km from Ahmedabad, he received a devastating call from relatives that the 1.10 pm London-bound flight had crashed. By 3 pm, a list confirmed the the tragic loss. "I drove back to the hospital and bodies of young doctors injured from the hostel were being brought in. "Young Zubeyra had underwent a dental treatment here," said Yasin. Other family members outside the postmortem room included Pervez's cousins Farooq and Sohail, who were there for identification. 1 2 Jaipur: A quiet boy, mostly engrossed in studies, Tanay, from a village near Pilani in Jhunjhunu district, secured All India Rank 13 in NEET-UG. He also topped the OBC-NCL category, as per the NTA's statement. The trick that worked for Tanay was regular revision along with his coaching preparations instead of keeping it for the last moment. "Whatever I learnt, I would revise it within three-four days of studying to test my knowledge. If I lacked somewhere, I would correct it immediately when the concept was still fresh in my mind so that the foundational knowledge was strong," said Tanay. He said that he kept building on the foundational knowledge and moved to more complex questions. Inspired by his elder sister, who is already pursuing MBBS from Churu Medical College, Tanay said that the preparation journey was slightly easy for him as he was guided at home too. "With tips from my sister, regular practice of test papers, and family's motivation, my preparation journey was mostly smooth. I used to play volleyball at times with friends in Sikar, which helped me refresh my mind," he said. Tanay's mother Sunita moved with him from Pilani to Sikar two years ago so that he could prepare for NEET-UG. "During the first year, only Tanay and I were in Sikar; later, his father and brother also shifted to Sikar for better studies. Though Tanay was educated in Pilani we moved to Sikar for better opportunities, and the proof is here," said Sunita. Speaking about Tanay, she said that he would wake up early to study, taking breaks only for meals and speaking to friends or teachers to clear his doubts.
