Parents are being warned about a new dangerous craze 'chroming' that is claiming the lives of children

Parents are being warned about a new dangerous craze 'chroming' that is claiming the lives of children It has already caused the death of a child in UK and parents are being warned of the dangers The dangerous trend has led to the loss off life of young people across the world (Image: PA ) A Welsh school has warned parents about the dangers of new online craze that has been targeting teens called Chroming. But what does it mean exactly? Safer Schools, a safeguarding initiative says that chroming refers to act where a person inhales chemicals like aerosols, nitrous oxide, solvents, and nitrites. While doing this might result in a temporary 'high', it can also lead to deadly consequences like heart and lung damage. These substances can also cause harm to a person's brain, and behavioural development. ‌ Although the abuse of these chemicals in such a way is not new, the way the trend is spreading among teens over social media is what raised concern. ‌ What has been the impact of this trend? The trend has already resulted in loss of life among teenagers across the world, including one in the UK when a 11-year-old-boy in Lancashire died after following the trend. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here On November 8, 2023, UK government had updated its laws classifying nitrous oxide as a Class C drug entailing criminal penalties for those abuse it. Still, as the chemicals that are misused in chroming are widely available is common household items like glue, permanent markers, and deodorant cans, it is harder to regulate. Article continues below Why are young people using it? Safer Schools states that children and young people might be enticed to engage in this craze due to its feeling (intoxication), thrill seeking, media influence, or peer pressure. How are young people using it? There are several ways in which people use to inhale the chemicals while chroming, which also makes it challenging to control dosage significantly increasing the risk. Spraying – This involves spraying the contents of an aerosol container directly into the mouth or nose. Bagging – This method entails spraying the contents of an aerosol container into a paper or plastic bag, which is then held over the person's mouth or nose for inhalation. Sniffing – This involves inhaling the fumes directly from the container. Huffing – This method involves soaking a rag with the inhalant and holding it to the face for inhalation ‌ What does the school's warning say? In a letter addressed to parents and carers, Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, in Bridgend, has said: 'We are reaching out to raise urgent awareness about a disturbing trend currently circulating among teenagers on social media, particularly TikTok, known as 'chroming." 'This emerging craze has already led to serious health consequences for some young people and in some tragic cases, loss of life. We believe it's vital for parents and carers of secondary school students to be fully informed.' It adds: 'It is particularly dangerous because it can be done relatively quickly using products that are easily accessible in most homes. Article continues below 'Young people may not fully understand the severity of the risks, especially when they see others engaging in the activity online without apparent consequences.' The school also said that it strongly encourages cares to speak directly to their ward about the issue and help them make safe and informed decisions.

Greg Monks, 38, vanished after becoming separated from his friends during the first evening of their trip. He was last seen on CCTV in the residential area of Cerro de Aguia, roughly four miles away from the main club and bar strip of Albufeira, on Tuesday night where he had been enjoying the night with his mates. ‌ His last known whereabouts were between Tuesday evening, May 27, and the early hours of Wednesday morning, May 28. ‌ His sister, Jillian Monk, has now urged residents in the Cerro de Aguia area to review any footage from their private cameras and ring doorbells. The worried sister posted on a Facebook page for expats and holidaymakers asking if anyone living nearby could assist in the search for her brother, reports the Daily Record. In a further post today she asked for help contacting local Portuguese radio stations to get the word out to local taxi drivers. Article continues below Jillian also wrote: "I am now seeking help from residents of the Cerro de Aguia area to please check any home cameras or doorbell footage around 2am and 5am as police believe he was in the area around this time!". "Please share this if you know anyone in the area. If you have cameras that cover parts of the streets, send me a message with your name and phone number." Greg disappeared on the first night of the stag do (Image: Facebook ) ‌ Portuguese police, who are conducting the search, have been checking local hospitals in their efforts to locate Greg. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here . Greg is said to have checked in with his mates at the Novochoro Apartments, a holiday resort with 31 units, just before he disappeared. The apartments are a mere 15-minute stroll to the main strip. However, they're about four miles from Cerro de Aguia, where Greg was last seen - and Cerro de Aguia is roughly the same distance from the strip. ‌ The stag party was scheduled to return last Saturday after arriving on Tuesday to celebrate in the popular sun-soaked destination. Jillian first sounded the alarm that Greg had gone missing in a frantic social media post on Thursday. She said: "My brother has not been seen since Tuesday evening. If you are currently there and have any information place contact me with any info." Greg's father has allegedly cut short a holiday in Spain to cross the border and look for his son. ‌ A fundraiser has also been set up to help raise money for the family who have flown out to help the search. Gillian McCallum, set up a fundraiser on behalf of the distraught family, said: "Our son Greg Monks went to Portugal for a stag do on Tuesday May 27 and on the first night back out there he never returned to his hotel and has now been missing for three days. We are desperately seeking Greg's safe return and need your help." Over £20,000 has been raised to fund the search efforts. A statement from the family said: "There are professional search teams out looking for Greg and the family have all flown out to try to help find him but don't know how long their stay will be." Article continues below They said: "They are doing everything they can. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in our efforts to bring Greg home. Thank you for your support and prayers."

Married youth worker called young girl 'chicken nugget' and rubbed her thigh

Married youth worker called young girl 'chicken nugget' and rubbed her thigh He also sent her sexually explicit messages and said he wanted 'a friend with benefits', adding that she needn't worry about having children with him 'because I've had the snip' Youth worker Francois Hanson worked for Neath Port Talbot Council youth services (Image: Copyright Unknown ) A married youth worker put his hand on a child's thigh and rubbed it during an unofficial meeting with her in his van. Francois Hanson, who worked for Neath Port Talbot Council youth team, also sent the girl, who was under 16, sexually explicit messages, a professional standards committee was told. In one he told her he needed "a friend with benefits". He also told the child she needn't worry about having children with him "because I've had the snip", the Education Workforce Council Wales panel heard. ‌ The girl, identified only as Child A, was taking exams at the time and having problems at home. She told the panel that initially she had wanted Hanson to be her youth worker but then his messages began to make her feel "uncomfortable". ‌ Hanson, who nicknamed her "chicken nugget", started being "inappropriate" just weeks after being allocated as her local authority youth worker, the hearing, held remotely on June 3, was told. Giving evidence the girl, now in her early twenties, recalled that the married man and father began to drive her home in his van alone. He would park at the top of her street where they would sit and talk for hours several times a week. It was on one of these occasions that he rubbed her thigh. She told the panel that Hanson, a youth worker with Neath Port Talbot Council since 2005, told her that he was keeping money away from his wife and children to get a house they could move into together. Article continues below He began sending her sexually explicit messages from his personal phone on the social media channel, Snapchat, sometimes as late as 1am. These messages included saying he needed someone to drink with and have fun with, asking her why she was shy, and telling her he "liked her a lot, more than I should". Sign up for our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here. The girl, now a young woman, said she had not understood at the time how inappropriate his actions and messages were. She had been suicidal at times because of problems in her life and Hanson, who she knew as "Frankie" was easy to talk to. ‌ She said he told her he was not happy in his marriage and on one occasion suggested she come to his house when his wife and children were out. Asked about when he touched her, she told the hearing that she had just told him about having suicidal feelings at the time: "He put his hand on my (mid/upper) thigh and told me "everything is going to be OK". "He rubbed up and down (on my thigh) and said 'everything is going to be alright'. I was like, OK, well I've got to go now. I remember hugging and then getting out of the van." ‌ She went on to explain: "He would message me after school and would contact me as late as 11pm or 1am over Snapchat sometimes." She said these messages made her feel "uncomfortable and embarrassed" coming from someone so much older who was meant to be safeguarding her as her youth worker. In one he told her: "I need a friend with benefit who I can drink with and have fun with...I would ask you but I don't want to scare you off or freak you out." On another occasion he messaged suggesting she come to his home because he had "a free house". Child A said she was wondering how to respond when the friend with her advised: "Absolutely not, you are not going. Stay with me. Either you tell your parents or I will." ‌ Matters came to a head when Hanson asked Child A to come to his house "for a guitar lesson" because his wife and children were out. When she told a friend, referred to as Child B in the hearing, Child B told her not to go, especially as they had an exam in the morning. The next day Child A went into school and told the school safeguarding officer about the messages from Hanson and showed her some of them. Police were called and came to the school where she made a statement. Police took her phone to try to recover the Snapchat and other messages, but Snapchat messages disappear if not saved and officers closed the case saying there was not enough evidence to secure a conviction. ‌ Hanson faces the following allegations before the EWC: That while employed as a youth worker at Neath Port Talbot Council: 1. He sent one or more inappropriate message(s) to Child A. 2. He made one or more inappropriate comments to Child A, in that he: (a) said, 'Well you wouldn't have to worry about that [having children] with me because I've had the snip'; (b) told her about problems in his marriage; and/or (c) told her that she could move in with him. 3. He put his hand on Child A's thigh. 4. His conduct at paragraph 1 and/or 2 and/or 3 was: (a) of a sexual nature; and/or (b) sexually motivated. 5. The facts of paragraphs 1 and/or 2 and/or 3 and/or 4 above constitute unacceptable professional conduct when considered (a) individually; and/or (b) together. Article continues below Hanson did not attend the hearing and was not represented and therefore the allegations were all taken as denied, panel chair Steve Powell said. The hearing continues.
