Mara Brock Akil's Forever Redefines Black Masculinity

Buzz Feed12-05-2025

Okay, let me start by saying you have another hit on your hands. I devoured this series!
I instantly fell in love with Lovie Simone as Keisha Clark and Michael Cooper Jr. as Justin Edwards. Can you tell us a little bit about the audition process and how you found your Keisha and Justin?
Yes, I was so excited when I saw her name in the credits. What was it like reuniting with Regina King on set, after previously working together when she directed a few episodes of Being Mary Jane?
Beautifully stated. When you talk about actors with range, and I don't just mean on-screen, Regina is at the top of my list. What was that conversation like before she officially signed on to direct?
You have played a pivotal role in bringing impassioned projects about Black women, love, and friendship to the small screen. The storylines are relatable, and even when they don't have a personal connection, they're effective. You typically explore the lives of adult Black women, but this time you're focus is teenage love. Tell me about that experience and any inspiration you found along the way.
Speaking of the times, within the last decade or two, technology has really transformed the way we communicate with each other and what it means to connect, particularly with younger generations. Sometimes, the lines of what information should be shared online can get blurred. Phones and social media played a big part in the series. Why did you find it important to incorporate technology as an extra character in the show?
Earlier, you mentioned your eldest son being your muse and chatting with Regina about your boys to help shape the vision you had for Forever. Typically, the romance genre is centered around the woman's point of view. Even romance-focused movies and books are deemed chick-flicks and chick-lit. The male perspective is rarely at the center. With Forever, we get the dual point of view from Keisha and Justin, but I feel like Justin's perspective was the main focus here. It was refreshing to see a neurodivergent Black boy openly and honestly express his feelings with his family, friends, and love interest, without being shamed. Nowadays, terms like "simp" are thrown around, which I think discourages men from being vulnerable, but Justin wasn't afraid of that. Why did you decide to go that route with Justin?
I really hope so. I loved how Justin didn't allow outside influences to dictate his personality. Even when his best friend tried to deter him from getting serious with Keisha, Justin continued to follow his heart instead. I felt really proud of him in a way.
Lastly, people have become more and more vocal online when it comes to fictional characters who are, or who fans believe to be white, being "swapped" with Black actors. Did you have any hesitation about getting behind this project because of that specific type of backlash?
It was such an honor and pleasure to chat with Mara about Forever, because that's just how long I think this show is going to sit in my heart and mind.

Doechii condemns Trump for ‘ruthless attacks' on Los Angeles in BET Awards acceptance speech

Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii denounced the 'ruthless attacks' on Los Angeles by the federal government while accepting the BET Award for female hip-hop artist on Monday night. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest,' the 'Denial Is a River' singer said. 'And I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?' On Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted workplace raids in L.A.'s garment district. Agents detained workers inside Ambiance Apparel, prompting protests. On Saturday morning, ICE agents gathered inside a gated industrial park in Paramount near a Home Depot. Word of their presence spread on social medial, which prompted protesters to arrive. Federal agents and sheriff's deputies fired tear gas and flash-bang rounds at the demonstrators, who threw items toward them. In response, President Trump deployed roughly 2,000 National Guard and 700 active-duty U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton to protect federal agents. 'People are being swept up and torn from their families and I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' Doechii said. 'For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza, we all deserve to live in hope and not in fear.' Doechii was not the only artist to publicly criticize the president and the federal government during the ceremony. Before singer Ledisi took the stage, actor, writer and producer Tyler Perry called out Hollywood studios for their silence in times when 'politicians are removing books from libraries, history and names from government buildings.' 'This is not the time to be silent, this is not the time to give up — this is the time to dig in and keep leaving footprints everywhere you go.'

NEW Episode: The White House 1600 Sessions Podcast "The Tradition of First Lady Forever Stamps: Barbara Bush"

White House Historical Association President Stewart McLaurin Celebrates First Lady Barbara Bush's Centennial Birthday with Grandson Pierce Bush, Artist Chas Fagan, and Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy President Andrew Roberts WASHINGTON, June 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The White House Historical Association released a new episode of The White House 1600 Sessions podcast today honoring First Lady Barbara Bush to commemorate what would have been her 100th birthday. The United States Postal Service celebrated this occasion by releasing the new Forever Stamp featuring Mrs. Bush's official White House portrait. The design was unveiled during a ceremony in the White House East Room last month, and the stamp goes on sale today. In the episode, Stewart is joined by Pierce Bush, grandson of President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Bush, Chas Fagan, painter of Mrs. Bush's official White House portrait, and Andrew Roberts, president of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, to explore Mrs. Bush's legacy and the significance of the stamp's special tribute. In these conversations, First Lady Barbara Bush is remembered for her strength, devotion to family, quick wit, and steadfast commitment to literacy. "Thousands of people will have increased their reading skills, maybe even learned to read, as a result of her initiative," said McLaurin. "She continues to be a role model." Pierce Bush, grandson to President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush, and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, shares his earliest memories from when visiting his grandparents and uncle meant taking a trip to the White House with his cousins. He fondly remembers his grandmother's attention to their passion for reading, which continues to inspire him in his work. "She believed that knowledge is the key to advance yourself and make the world a better place," said Pierce Bush. "She practiced what she preached by doing it herself but also making sure that her kids and her grandkids had a love for reading—and thankfully, it has been passed on." Painter, sculptor, and White House artist Chas Fagan recounts the story of creating this iconic portrait that is set to appear on the new Forever Stamp today. He recalls visiting her in Kennebunkport, Maine, the location of the family's Walker Point Estate, instantly finding inspiration for his painting from her hospitality and disarming wit. The portrait, unveiled in 2005, still hangs in the East Wing of the White House today. "The absolute joy of this particular project was spending time with her," said Fagan. "That wonderful feeling of warmth and humor was very much part of her. I wanted to make sure that would be reflected." The portrait features Mrs. Bush's classic multi-pearl necklace and cheerful yet driven expression—traits she was always admired for as a strong matriarch and devoted advocate. McLaurin is joined by Andrew Roberts, president of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, a nonprofit she established in 1989. The pair discuss Mrs. Bush's legacy and passion living on through its mission, changing lives of millions of Americans through philanthropy and community engagement. The foundation has provided over $130 million of grant funding to support reading and writing skills for all ages. "We have mentoring programs where we pair high school students with struggling early readers. That's not only helping early readers—that's providing leadership skills to those high school students," said Roberts. "I think the impact of her work really spans far beyond just numbers you can count." The White House 1600 Sessions podcast is available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify in both audio and video formats. The full video of this podcast episode is also available on the White House Historical Association's YouTube channel here. The White House 1600 Sessions The White House Historical Association's President Stewart McLaurin is the host of The White House 1600 Sessions, the Association's official audio and video podcast devoted to exploring the history, cultural impact, untold stories, and personal accounts of America's most iconic residence and highest office.
