Unfortunately, whenever tensions between India and Pakistan simmer, the brand comes under fire. Today too, as India and Pakistan battle rages along the country's borders, this successful Sindhi enterprise finds itself facing the brunt of protests objecting against the name 'Karachi'. After protests erupted in Hyderabad on Thursday, the promoters approached chief minister Revanth Reddy and the police seeking support in protecting their business.
"My grandfather fled to India during Partition with his family with just the clothes on their back. He just wanted to keep the name of the place he came from and the legacy and heritage of our roots alive and decided upon the name. But Karachi Biscuits is a proud Hyderabadi brand that was born here," says Vijay Ramnani, one of the promoters of the bakery.
Though initially reluctant to talk about the issue for fear of coming into the spotlight, Ramnani told TOI: "Karachi is a popular suffix to many stores adopted by Sindhis Hindus who migrated during the partition to various cities. I don't know why protesters are going after the name, which has nothing to do with nationality or Pakistan. We are just being unfairly targeted," he laments.
Though Khanchand Ramnani passed away in the 1990's, the bakery that started out with one store at the iconic Moazzamjahi market in the old city of Hyderabad in 1953, has endured, growing to over 35 outlets across the country.
"People love us for our taste. Four generations have grown up enjoying our biscuits in Hyderabad. My grandfather first started out supplying coal to transporters and then baking breads on that coal. He later went on to add cookies and fruit biscuits that are shipped across the world," he adds.
The secret of the famed Karachi fruit biscuit, he says, is a closely guarded family secret that has travelled from Hyderabad in Pakistan to Hyderabad in India.

Construction workers to get Rs12,000 annual pension as labour department submits SOP
1 2 3 Pune: Construction workers registered with the Maharashtra Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board will soon receive pension as the labour department has submitted a proposal to govt suggesting a standard operating procedure. "A govt resolution was issued in March. The scheme will be rolled out after the SOP for its implementation is approved by govt," an official said. Officials said that those aged 60 and above are likely to get Rs12,000 annually, which will mark a significant step toward social security. "The labour department has clarified that the pension scheme will be implemented entirely through the board without any additional financial burden on state govt. The money will be sanctioned from the board's resources," another official said. Currently, there are 37 lakh registered workers in the state while another 16 lakh are yet to renew their registrations. The labour department is yet to determine the number of registered workers who have turned 60. The GR outlines the eligibility criteria and application procedures to access pension. If husband and wife are registered workers, they will be entitled to separate pension benefits. The scheme also provides for continuation of pension to surviving spouses after a construction worker's death, though it clarifies that double benefits will not be allowed if a spouse is already receiving pension. However, workers getting benefits under the Employees State Insurance Act, 1948, and the Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provision Act, 1952, will not be eligible for this scheme, as per Central govt guidelines. Once approved by the secretary and chief executive officer at board level, successful applicants will be given a "pension number certificate", with the date of issuance considered as the official pension commencement date. The entire process will be managed through the integrated welfare board computer system, which will ensure transparent and efficient disbursement. The SOP requires annual proof of existence from pensioners to ensure continued credits to their accounts, with provisions made for bank account changes and heir registration in case of a pensioner's death. For workers on the ground, this development brings hope. "The scheme is important to us. Even if the amount is less, at least there is some security," said Babu Kedkar, a registered board member. Meerabai, whose husband died in a construction site accident, has been diligently renewing her board membership and is hoping that the pension comes through. Her only son works at a private firm as a security guard. "I am 50 now; I only hope the govt gives the pension," she told TOI. Those between 18 and 60 years and who have worked for at least 90 days in the previous year can register with the board, with annual renewal mandatory. However, workers above 60 are currently not eligible for renewal, which has left them without access to board benefits until this pension scheme's implementation. State to install smart power meters in phased manner
Panaji: The state electricity department, through its contractor Digismart Networks Pvt Ltd, has begun implementing the smart meter project for the state, where 7.5 lakh electrical meters will be replaced with smart meters. The first smart meter is likely to be installed after six months, electricity department superintending engineer Mayur Hede told TOI . In the first phase, the electricity department's transformers and feeders' meters will be replaced, followed by govt offices and govt quarters. In the next phase, industrial and commercial consumers' meters will be replaced, followed by domestic consumers — the largest chunk of users in the state. The smart meters will function in a prepaid mode and will mark the end of the era of monthly bills for consumers. Consumers will be sent a reminder to recharge when their charge is getting over. 'There will be no concept of monthly bills. A consumer-friendly app will send regular notifications to the public. The benefits to consumers and the department will be multifold,' he said. 'Users will be able to check the actual consumption, sitting anywhere in the world. Consumers will also have access to daily, weekly, and fortnightly consumption records on the app. The app will alert the user in case the load increases above the sanctioned load and if one needs to apply for an increase in load,' Hede said. During power failure, the restoration time will be cut as the blackout will be communicated directly to the central server, he said. The system will also inform the department about the voltage profile of consumers in case of low or high voltage and help improve the quality and reliability of power. It will also help the department accurately forecast the load requirement, which will help in better load scheduling, the superintending engineer said. 'As we buy power from the power exchange, we have to be very accurate. If we ask for more power, we have to pay for it even if we don't consume it. Similarly, if we ask for less power, we will have to pay charges for overdrawal.' First a survey will be conducted to check the feasibility of installing the meters depending on the location. India China to restart direct flights, talks to resolve trade issues; Wang Yi to visit India
With the US and China keen on formally inking a deal to end the trade war between the 2 countries, India is stepping up efforts to mend relations with Beijing. In talks between foreign secretary Vikram Misri and visiting Chinese vice foreign minister Sun Weidong, India and China agreed to expedite measures to resume direct air services and to hold 'certain functional dialogues' to resolve specific issues of concern in, among other things, trade and economy Misri hosted Sun this week for a rare high-level bilateral visit from China, as first reported by TOI on Wednesday, and their second meeting this year, following the engagement in Beijing in January during which both sides had announced several measures to normalise the relationship. On this occasion, they agreed to continue to stabilize and rebuild ties with focus on people-centric engagements. According to Beijing, India reaffirmed its support for the ongoing Chinese presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the 2 sides also agreed to prepare for the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives' (SR) on the India-China Boundary Question in India. The SR talks resumed in December last year after a gap of 5 years, with NSA Ajit Doval travelling to China. It was then announced that his counterpart Wang Yi would travel to India in 2025 for another round of talks. Beijing remains keen that PM Narendra Modi visit China this year for the SCO summit in Tianjin that will also see Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif in attendance. India has not confirmed Modi's participation and yet and will probably wait to see the outcomes of the SR meeting, which could take place as early as next month, and the SCO foreign ministers' meeting – ahead of the summit - that may have external affairs minister S Jaishankar participating. India did not mention SCO in its readout. Sun also called on Doval during his visit. 'The two sides agreed to expedite steps involved in resuming direct air services between the two countries. Foreign Secretary hoped for the early conclusion of an updated Air Services Agreement,'' said an Indian readout, adding that they further agreed to take practical steps for visa facilitation and exchanges between media and think-tanks. Misri appreciated China's support for resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra this month and expressed hope for progress on trans-border river cooperation, including hydrological data sharing. India had earlier raised concerns about China's construction of apparently the world's largest hydropower dam on the Brahmaputra River, known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. India wants to resolve trade and economic issues, including China's export controls on rare earth-related items, in a way that can promote long-term policy transparency and predictability. On the rare earth issues, the Indian government had said this week that it's in touch with Beijing to bring predictability in supply chain for trade, consistent with international practices. According to the Indian readout, the 2 two sides 'positively assessed the activities planned under the 75th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China and agreed to facilitate the same'. The Chinese readout of the Misri-Sun talks said that both sides pushed for resumption of direct flights, people-to-people exchanges and resumption of bilateral dialogue mechanisms steadily. According to Beijing, Sun said that both sides should follow the important understandings reached by Modi and President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Kazan last year, following the agreement to end the military standoff in eastern Ladakh. He also called for increasing mutual trust, properly handling differences and playing a constructive role in maintaining international peace and stability.
