The festival, the longest-running and prestigious US festival dedicated to
Indian independent cinema
, will celebrate its milestone
25th edition
here from June 20-22, spotlighting "bold new voices, storied auteurs, and urgent narratives" from the Indian subcontinent and its global diaspora.
"What began as a grassroots platform is now a global stage for Indian independent cinema," Festival Director Aseem Chhabra said in a press statement Monday.
"This year's lineup is one of our most powerful and wide-ranging to date. From deeply personal documentaries to regional narratives that rarely reach global audiences, the 25th edition of NYIFF reflects the evolving language of Indian cinema."
The festival will pay tribute to Benegal, a "titan of Indian parallel cinema", who passed away in December 2024 at the age of 90. NYIFF will screen a 4K restoration of "Manthan", Benegal's landmark 1976 film about India's White Revolution, restored by the Film Heritage Foundation.
The film premiered at the Cannes Classics in 2024.
It will also honour the work of Oscar-winning film director James Ivory, with "An Arrested Moment", a short documentary from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, directed by Dev Benegal. The film explores Ivory's "enduring fascination with Indian art and culture."
The 2025 NYIFF lineup includes 22 feature-length films-18 narratives and four documentaries-spanning more than a dozen languages and regions.

The festival program also includes 21 short narrative and documentary films.
From Tamil and Odia to Assamese, Hindi, and Malayalam, the selection of the works to be showcased at the festival "reflects both the diversity and the evolving language of Indian cinema," it said.
Chhabra said Siddiqui, who has won two NYIFF best actor trophies, will be attending this year's festival.
Executive Director of the Indo-American Arts Council, which presents NYIFF, Suman Gollamudi said the festival has long been a space where India's cinematic legacy meets its most daring futures.
"At 25, we are not just celebrating the past-we are investing in what's next."
The 2025 festival opens with the East Coast premiere of the Manoj Bajpayee, Priyanka Bose and Deepak Dobriyal starrer "The Fable", directed by Raam Reddy. With a debut at the 2024 Berlinale, the film "merges surrealism and psychological tension against the Himalayan backdrop". The film, whose ensemble includes Tillotama Shome in a cameo, recently took home Best Film at the Leeds International Film Festival.
The festival's centerpiece is the noir thriller "Kennedy", starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone and directed by Anurag Kashyap.
The closing night film, "Little Thomas", is a coming-of-age dramedy set in 1990s Goa, marking the directorial debut of Kaushal Oza. The film stars Dugal of "Mirzapur" fame and Gulshan Devaiah of "Hunterrr" and "Ulajh" fame, who will be in attendance along with the crew.
Siddiqui's "I'm Not An Actor", a film that "blurs fiction and reality in a searing critique of fame and identity", Marathi documentary "Marching in the Dark" on widows of suicide-struck farmers; "Renaissance Man" about parliamentarian Vivek Tankha and "Turtle Walker" which follows a conservationist's mission to protect India's sea turtles are among the line-up of films that will be showcased at the festival.
The festival's nonfiction programming includes "A Fly on the Wall", a film by Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar documenting physician-assisted suicide in Switzerland.
The New York Indian Film Festival is presented annually by the Indo-American Arts Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Indian arts and culture in the United States. Since its inception in 2001, NYIFF has showcased the best in Indian cinema, celebrating the diversity and creativity of filmmakers from India and around the world.

Sanjay Mishra marks his Bengali cinema debut

Sanjay Mishra marks his Bengali cinema debut in Pritha Chakraborty's 'Phera,' alongside Ritwick Chakraborty and Sohini Sarkar. The film explores themes of home, memory, and unspoken love through the story of a father and son grappling with the past in a rapidly changing city. Phera, directed by Pritha Chakraborty marks the Bengali debut of actor Sanjay Mishra, known for his powerful and nuanced performances across Indian cinema. Joining him in pivotal roles are actors — Ritwick Chakraborty and Sohini Sarkar . With such a dynamic cast and a compelling narrative, Phera promises to be an emotional and thought-provoking cinematic experience. Speaking about his debut in Bengali cinema, Sanjay, 'Bengali is a sweet language, and I've always loved and admired legends like Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen who come from this land. Stepping into Bengali cinema for the first time is both exciting and enriching. I'm looking forward to working with some of the finest talents of the Bengali film industry. I hope the audience embraces this story the way we're preparing to embrace the journey of making it. ' Ritwick on his part added, 'I'm excited to be a part of Phera. I've always admired the way Pritha thinks and brings her stories to life — her direction is both sensitive and sharp. Sharing the screen with the legendary Sanjay Mishra ji is an honour, and I'm looking forward to this journey with immense enthusiasm.' Sohini's role in Phera is brief, it holds a deep emotional weight in the story. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Milana, 38, Shows Her Huge Size In New Photos. Paperela Undo 'Sometimes, it's not about the length but the impact. I'm glad to be a part of Pritha's vision and to work alongside such brilliant co-actors,' said the actress. 'Phera began as a quiet question I kept returning to: What do we really call home? A place? A person? A time that no longer exists? In a world obsessed with forward motion and achievement, I was drawn to two men who are both, in their own ways, stuck. One is held back by memory, the other by momentum. And yet, somewhere in the stillness between them, I found something deeply human—a kind of unspoken love that doesn't need resolution, only recognition. This film is not about big changes or loud emotions. It is about everyday endurance, the dignity of small lives, and the uncomfortable tenderness that exists between people who've forgotten how to speak but still manage to listen. With Phera, I wanted to explore what it means to return—not in triumph, but in truth. To be seen. To be enough,' said Pritha. Talking more about the storyline of the film, the director added, 'Two men. One house that no longer stands the way it used to. In a city that rewards speed and reinvention, Priyam runs just fast enough to not fall behind. His father, Pannalal, once a local hero, now measures time in habits and rust. When the past quite literally cracks open, their two worlds — and worldviews — are forced into uneasy proximity. Phera is a story of quiet reckonings — of what we call success, of how much we leave behind, and what remains when the noise fades. It is about the awkward poetry of returning — not to glory, but to someone who still saves you a seat. Some lives don't arc. They echo.' ₹4.35 crore per minute: How a cameo made this star India's highest-paid actor; he beat Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, Prabhas

It was in the 90s that Chiranjeevi became the first Indian actor to charge ₹1 crore for a film. It soon became the benchmark to measure top stars, with the three Khans and Akshay Kumar soon joining the ranks, along with Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. But over time, the ₹1-crore sum became small, with even supporting actors charging that. Soon, it became ₹10 crore and eventually ₹100 crore. In the midst of it all, in 2019, an actor charged a staggering ₹4.35 crore per minute for a role, reshaping the economics of film casting. (Also read: India's highest-paid actress earns ₹30 crore per film, has no release in 6 years, yet beat Deepika, Alia Bhatt, Kareena) In 2017, after the stupendous success of Baahubali 2, SS Rajamouli announced his next project with Jr NTR and Ram Charan. The film was eventually titled RRR, with more cast members joining over the next few months. Early in 2019, Bollywood star Ajay Devgn signed on for a cameo, alongside Alia Bhatt and Shriya Saran, who joined later. Ajay Devgn was only on screen in RRR for 8 minutes, but he charged ₹35 crore for his appearance, the most expensive cameo in Indian cinema history. The ₹4.35 crore per minute fees were the highest per diem charged by any actor in India at the time. To put it into perspective, Shah Rukh Khan would have to charge ₹300 crore for Jawan (more than the film's budget) for his 70-minute screen time in the film. Going by the ₹4.35 crore per minute rate, Rajinikanth for Jailer, Salman Khan for Tiger 3, Prabhas for Kalki 2898 AD, and Allu Arjun for Pushpa 2 would all have to charge ₹250-300 crore, much higher than what they eventually did. This cameo made Ajay the highest-paid actor in India, at least by this metric. Ajay eventually did become the highest-paid OTT star in the country when he signed Hotstar's Rudra: The Edge of Darkness for ₹125 crore in 2021. Ajay Devgn has tasted box office success post-pandemic multiple times, with the success of films like Drishyam 2, Raid 2, and Singham Again. The actor reportedly varies his fees depending on the project, lowering it to ₹20 crore for small-budget films like Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha and Raid 2, but also elevating it to over ₹40 crore for bigger titles like Singham Again.
