Royal signboard revealed to public after being lost for century

Korea Herald01-03-2025

The signboard that hung on the now-gone royal Seonwonjeon Hall was unveiled to the public Thursday after the authorities brought the 19th-century historical artifact back to Gyungbokgung.
The Korea Heritage Service and the government-affiliated Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation revealed the signboard at 10 a.m. at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Jongno-gu, central Seoul, located inside the main Joseon-era palace. The current location of the museum — where the signboard will be kept — is where Gyungbokgung's Seonwonjeon stood over 100 years ago.
The authorities discovered the lost artifact had been put up for auction in Japan in 2023 and persuaded the owner to return it. Video game developer Riot Games funded the artifact's reacquisition as part of its project to protect the country's cultural assets since 2012.
The wooden signboard bears the Chinese characters meaning "Seonwonjeon," referring to the Gyungbokgung Hall that was lost in the early 20th century. Seonwonjeon Hall was where portraits of past Joseon kings were hung, symbolizing the roots of the royal family and hosting the incumbent kings' rituals to their ancestors.
The signboard is thought to have adorned the sacred hall some 150 years ago, and the writing on it is believed to be written by 19th-century royal official Seo Seung-bo.
It was lost sometime after the Seonwonjeon relinquished its functions when King Gojong located his office and residence in 1897. The hall was dismantled afterward, and its parts were used for the now-destroyed Bakmunsa Temple in Jung-gu, Seoul, built in 1932 and dedicated to Japan's Resident-General of Korea, Ito Hirobumi.
Authorities are unsure exactly how the signboard was lost and taken to Japan.
The KHS plans to start the reconstruction of Seonwonjeon Hall in 2030, after the National Palace Museum is relocated to Sejong. The reclaimed signboard will adorn the rebuilt hall.

Tencent seeks to buy stake in Nexon at $15b

Tencent is reportedly considering acquiring a stake in South Korean game giant Nexon at 20 trillion won ($15 billion), a move that would further solidify the Chinese tech giant's presence in the Korean cultural content market. According to Bloomberg, Tencent Holdings has reached out to the family of Nexon's late founder Kim Jung-ju to discuss the possibility of an acquisition. The report added that the size or structure of the deal is unclear. Both Tencent and Nexon have declined to respond to the report. Kim's wife and daughters own about 67.6 percent of the game giant's holding company NXC. Through NXC, they own a 44.4 percent stake in Nexon. Considering the stakes, the deal is estimated to be worth 20 trillion won. The other 30.64 percent stake in NXC is owned by the Korean government. Kim's relatives turned in the shares worth roughly 4.7 trillion won to the government to pay off an inheritance tax. The Finance Ministry has been trying to sell the stake through a tender offer but has failed on multiple occasions. Tencent has long shown interest in Nexon. In 2019, it was named as a potential bidder when NXC was put up for sale. It ultimately did not participate in the bidding. At the time, market big names including Kakao and Netmarble submitted bids, but the sale was eventually called off without a deal. Tencent has been pushing to tighten its grip on the Korean cultural content market through strategic equity investments, holding 34.76 percent stake in Shift Up, 13.71 percent of Krafton, and 17.52 percent in Netmarble, making it the second-largest shareholder in each. It is also the third-largest shareholder in Kakao Games with a 3.88 percent stake. In May, Tencent Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Chinese tech giant, acquired the entire 9.38 percent stake of K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment held by Hybe, valued at approximately 200 billion won. The acquisition positioned Tencent as the second-largest effective shareholder of SM. With the talks of an acquisition deal brewing up, shares of Tokyo-listed Nexon surged as much as 10 percent shortly after the market started trading Friday. Seoul-listed Nexon Games saw a 10 percent surge in its share price as well.

At heart of K-music, pansori aims to strike global chord

Performance marking 60th anniversary of pansori's designation as National Intangible Cultural Heritage to be held later this month Marking the 60th anniversary of pansori's designation as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage this year, 12 Intangible Cultural Heritage holders in pansori will come together to deliver a performance of pansori, a form of narrative singing of epic stories and folklore. The Korea Heritage Service and the Korea Heritage Agency are jointly organizing a performance titled "Deukeumjiseol," which translates as "the art of gaining the true sound and knowing how to tell it," June 26-28 and July 3-4 at the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul. Admission is free and registration can be made through Naver starting Thursday at 9 a.m. The five-day event is part of a cultural program aimed at recognizing the holders of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in pansori and promoting the country's cultural heritage by making it more accessible for the public. It will also be a rare chance for the public to see five stories of pansori: "Chunhyangga," a love tale between the daughter of a courtesan and the son of a magistrate; "Heungbuga," a tale of humor and family; "Sugungga," a story about a sea turtle that tricks a rabbit to get its liver to cure the sea king; "Simcheongga," a tale of filial piety; and "Jeokbyeokga," which is an epic from China's "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." While pansori is often regarded as difficult to approach, Korea's first million-selling author, Kim Hong-shin, who will host the upcoming performance, underscored that pansori has become an essential element of Korean culture and music. "The performance will be a great opportunity to convey the sound of our country's traditional tune and the beauty behind it. I hope many people will join us in sharing this joyful experience," he said during Wednesday's press conference at the Korea House in central Seoul. Kim Hye-Jeong, president of the Pansori Society, struck a similar chord, noting that pansori's unique charm connects the audience and singer to the story. Pansori master Kim Il-Koo, who was recognized as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage holder of "Jeokbyeokga" in 2020, expressed hopes that pansori would reach a wider audience through the performance. "Performing abroad and receiving enthusiastic applause makes me proud, especially when a foreign audience says 'bravo' after seeing my performance. I hope more people in and outside the country will show support and interest in pansori."

2025 CAA Graduation Season

HANGZHOU, China, June 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- As 2025 approaches its most vibrant and life-affirming season, the China Academy of Art (CAA) has already been radiating boundless vitality over the past months. While Black Myth: Wukong Art Exhibition continues to forge its brilliance, CAA now unveils another landmark cultural spectacle for Hangzhou—Metamorphoses: 2025 CAA Graduation Season. This year's graduation season revolves around the theme "Metamorphoses". The concept is rooted in the traditional Chinese notion of the seventy-two pentads. In this philosophy, pentad is change, and change is the Dao; through endless metamorphoses, the primordial core persists. "Metamorphoses" thus stand for infinite possibilities, for capacity, for vision, and above all, for spirit. Metamorphoses: 2025 CAA Graduation Season was officially launched on May 31. This year's edition spans seven major venues across Hangzhou: the Xiangshan, Liangzhu, and Nanshan campuses of CAA; Zhejiang Art Museum; World Tourism Museum; Quan Shanshi Art Center; and a citywide media exhibition zone. A total of 2,971 graduates from 20 academic units, including 1,815 undergraduates, 1,006 postgraduates, and 150 students from the affiliated secondary school, present over 3,000 graduation works for the city. On opening night, a themed performance intertwined with a fashion runway show unfolded beneath the rain, transforming the evening into a flowing, poetic spectacle. President Yu Xuhong of CAA stated, "The 2025 Graduation Exhibition is a concentrated manifestation of CAA's disciplinary development and talent cultivation. It is a grand stage where 2,971 creative young individuals present themselves for society's review, and more importantly, a shared public arena of aesthetic education where the power of creation is collectively felt and understood. Let us together create the art of our era, write a new chapter in global art history, and shape the new landscape of world art." Liu Yihong, Artistic Director of the opening ceremony and Vice Dean of the School of Visual Communication noted that this year's stage design breaks away from conventional audience-facing formats. Instead, it unfolds in a four-sided immersive arena, resonating with the thematic spirit of Metamorphoses. Drawing inspiration from the concept of Metamorphoses, Professors Chen Peng, Wang Shuying, Wu Jie, and Hu Nan from the School of Fashion Design led a collective presentation of 158 graduate fashion collections. In 2009, CAA became the first art academy to present its students' graduation works from all disciplines to the public, in the form of the brand-new "Graduation Exhibition Week". The feast aims to recommend outstanding talents to society and showcase CAA as an "Unwalled Academy" that integrates internal and external resources. In the face of the boundless cosmos and the ever-shifting global landscape, let us, with the spirit of creators, forge the inner core of our lives and unfold our artistic journeys. Let us, through the actions of creators, drive social innovation and ride the tides of our time. The future of art will surely flourish in the interplay of divergence and convergence, giving rise to infinite possibilities. The exhibition will run through June 20.
