Emma Raducanu paired with Carlos Alcaraz for new-look US Open mixed doubles

BreakingNews.ie5 hours ago

Emma Raducanu is set to play with Carlos Alcaraz in a star-studded mixed doubles event at the US Open this summer.
Traditionally played in the latter stages of grand slams, US Open organisers announced earlier this year they would hold the mixed doubles tournament over two days in the week before the main tournament in an attempt to attract more high-profile players.

The response was largely negative but the announcement of the first 16 pairs to have entered appears to have justified the move.
Raducanu will hope it is more successful than her first mixed doubles attempt at a grand slam last summer with Andy Murray at Wimbledon, where she pulled out ahead of their opening match because of concern over her wrist, denying her partner what would have been a final appearance at the All England Club.
It became one of the biggest stories of the tournament, with Raducanu receiving heavy criticism and later apologising to Murray.
As well as Alcaraz and Raducanu, British number one Jack Draper has entered with Olympic goal medallist Zheng Qinwen while men's world number one Jannik Sinner will play with American Emma Navarro.

Other pairs include women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic and fellow Serbian Olga Danilovic and off-court partners Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The event will take place on August 19th and 20th, with the winners scooping a prize pot of $1 million (€865,000)
Not all the pairs announced on Tuesday might make the cut, with entries open until July 28th.
The top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking – which currently would not include Raducanu and Alcaraz – will qualify directly, with eight further teams given wild card spots.

Pep Guardiola ignores his key rule on captaincy to name Man City star in leadership group - as boss breaks silence on Jack Grealish's Club World Cup snubbing

Pep Guardiola broke his own managerial rules to appoint Erling Haaland as one of Manchester City 's captains for the season ahead in a significant show of faith in the superstar striker. Haaland's leadership stock had continuingly grown over his three years at the Etihad Stadium and, with Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker leaving the club, City needed a shake-up. Players and staff usually vote on a five-man leadership group in August but Guardiola has taken matters into his own hands. The Catalan was left disappointed with how the captaincy was managed last term, with ex-skipper Walker departing for AC Milan in January. Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Rodri are joining Haaland in the four as City start their defence of the Club World Cup against Wydad AC in Philadelphia on Wednesday. 'I'm the manager and for the first time in my career I decide the captains,' Guardiola said. 'I didn't like what happened last season and I decide who will represent the team. 'Sometimes I want to be the boss. This season I decided to do it, choose the four captains and after the tournament maybe we choose one or two more. 'Erling is incredibly well respected. He has to learn what it means to be a captain because he will hopefully be here for many years and sooner or later he will take that position to be the first one. 'When you have Bernardo, Rodri, Ruben and Gundogan – who was captain when we won the Treble - he will learn. 'The four will guide the new players. There will be problems this season, like any season, but it's more than fine. 'These four players on the pitch, they are huge personalities. They say, 'We cannot accept what is going on' and make the step up.' Guardiola addressed Jack Grealish's omission from the 27-man squad taken to the United States. Grealish is set to leave the club this summer, with Napoli among those monitoring his situation, and Guardiola reiterated his comments on the final day of the season when maintaining that the 29-year-old needs regular game time. 'He had a conversation with the club and they decided it was best,' Guardiola said. 'Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions. 'We decide that he has to play. The club was honest, he was honest. We decide that the best thing is to stay (behind) and have a place that he can feel like he can come back to be the player like he was in the year of the Treble or all his career in Aston Villa. 'Without him it would have been more difficult in the year of the Treble. The fact is in the last two seasons he didn't play much minutes. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days, every three days and show again the quality he has.'

Giants' Rafael Devers: 'I am here to play wherever they want me to play'

June 17 - During his introductory news conference with the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, Rafael Devers declared something in Spanish that the Boston Red Sox wished they could have heard from one of the game's elite hitters. "They're the men in charge," Devers' translator said two days after being acquired from the Red Sox. "I am here to play wherever they want me to play." According to Giants manager Bob Melvin, this means the 28-year-old Devers will soon start taking grounders so he can split time between designated hitter and first base. The ninth-year standout has yet to play first base in the big leagues. "We talked a little bit today," Melvin said. "And like he said, he goes, 'I'll play wherever you want me to play. I'll hit wherever you want me to hit.' "We're going to work him in and get him some ground balls at first and make sure he's comfortable before we put him over there. And that's pretty much the way we look at it right now: a little bit of DH and a little bit of first." For tonight - Devers' Giants debut versus the Cleveland Guardians -- he will bat third and serve as the designated hitter. That's the only position Devers played for the Red Sox this year, which was a bone of contention for the left-handed slugger as well as the team. Devers didn't appreciate being moved from third base to DH when Alex Bregman signed a free-agent contract during spring training - and the Red Sox didn't appreciate Devers' unwillingness to give first base a try after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury on May 2. One thing led to another until Sunday - when the Red Sox and Giants announced their trade that reverberated across MLB. Devers and his 10-year, $313.5-million contract went to San Francisco for left-handed starter Kyle Harrison, right-handed reliever Jordan Hicks and two prospects: outfielder James Tibbs and pitcher Jose Bello. "It's incredibly impactful to have a guy like him in the lineup," Melvin said. "The buzz around our clubhouse on Sunday and leaving (Los Angeles on) Sunday and certainly on the off day and today has certainly been pretty amazing." Devers produced a .279/.349/.510 slash line during eight-plus seasons in Boston that featured 215 homers and 696 RBIs over 1,053 games. The Giants anticipate Devers serving as the franchise's best left-handed power source since Barry Bonds retired in 2007 - as no San Francisco lefty has swatted 30 home runs in a season since Bonds' 45 in 2004. Coincidentally, Bonds sat in the front row for Devers' news conference and Devers smiled enthusiastically in his direction whenever Bonds was referenced. "I think just looking at him, my game has already improved a lot," Devers said. --Field Level Media

Phillies sit Nick Castellanos for ‘inappropriate comment' to manager

June 17 - Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters before Tuesday's game at the Miami Marlins that Nick Castellanos was benched after making an "inappropriate" comment to Thomson. In the eighth inning of a 5-2 series-opening win Monday, Thomson removed Castellanos from the outfield in favor of Johan Rojas as a defensive replacement. That's what prompted Castellanos to say something to Thomson that the manager deemed out of order. "I understand the decision," Castellanos said Tuesday, per The Athletic. "It was when I got taken out. I wasn't happy about it. I spoke my mind. (Thomson) said that I crossed a line, so my punishment is that I'm not playing." Max Kepler will start in Castellanos' usual spot in right field while batting cleanup for the Phillies on Tuesday. The decision ends Castellanos' streak of 236 straight games started, which was the second-longest active streak in the major leagues behind Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves. Olson is in the lineup for the 686th straight game Tuesday. Castellanos, 33, is in his fourth season in Philadelphia and is batting .278 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs through 72 games. --Field Level Media
