Encounter between security forces and terrorists enters day 2 in Kishtwar
Encounter between Security forces and terrorists in Singhpora area of Chatroo continued for the second day in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar.
One jawan lost his life in the line of duty during the ongoing operation, as per Army officials.
In an official statement on X, White Knight Corps said, "During the ongoing operation, fierce gunfight is continuing. One of our Brave hearts sustained grievous injuries in the exchange of fire and has succumbed despite best medical efforts. Operation is in progress.
"The encounter began in the early hours after security forces established contact with terrorists in the Chhatru area. The Jammu and Kashmir Police also confirmed the exchange of fire in the area.
"Exchange of fire started between Security Forces and terrorists in the Singhpora area of Chhatru in Kishtwar," the Jammu and Kashmir Police said in a brief statement.
Earlier, Army officials confirmed that additional troops have been deployed to the region to support the ongoing counter-terrorism operation, which aims to neutralise the hiding militants.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and intensified search operations, with reinforcements ensuring that containment protocols are maintained.
Further details on the number of terrorists involved and the current status of the operation are awaited.
Earlier on May 16, VK Birdi, Inspector General of Police for Kashmir Zone, said that six terrorists were neutralised in Jammu and Kashmir under two separate operations in Kelar, Shopian and Tral conducted by the Indian Army in coordination with Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
"In the wake of heightened terror activities in Kashmir Valley, all the security forces deployed here reviewed their strategies. Following this review, there was an intensified focus on operations. On the basis of this intensified focus and coordination, we conducted two successful operations in the last 48 hours during which we had significant achievement. These two operations were conducted in the Kelar in Shopian and Tral areas, which resulted in the neutralisation of a total of six terrorists. We are committed to finish the terror ecosystem in Kashmir Valley," the IGP Kashmir said.
Following the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, including a Nepali national, were killed, the Indian forces have intensified their operation against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

UP: Eid-ul-Azha celebrated amid tight security
Lucknow, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the state on Saturday with people offering namaaz amidst tight security. In the state capital, namaaz was offered at the Lucknow Eidgah under the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali. After offering namaaz, prayers were made for the safety of the jawans posted at the borders and safeguarding the country. In a video message, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, on Saturday, reminded the Muslim community to follow the advisory issued by the Islamic Centre of India and sacrifice only those animals on which there are no bans, adding that sacrifice should take place at the designated spots." "The blood of the sacrificed animal should not be released in drains, and the waste should be disposed of as per the arrangements made by the Municipal Corporation. After offering namaaz, one should pray for the development and safety of the nation and also for the Army jawans safeguarding our borders," he said. UP's Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Thursday issued directives ensuring the peaceful and safe observance of the festival across the state. The police implemented a multi-pronged strategy, focusing on preventive measures, community engagement and heightened vigilance, with police stations thoroughly reviewing their festival registers to prevent the initiation of any new traditions. Meetings were held with religious leaders, peace committees, civil defence personnel and prominent citizens, in coordination with local magistrates and other relevant departments, to foster coordination and dialogue. Permission for any new traditions related to sacrifice was denied, while a strict ban on the sacrifice of prohibited animals was enforced. Furthermore, coordination was established with municipal corporations and other departments for the proper disposal of remains after sacrifice. The police catalogued all Eid-ul-Azha events and hotspots. Additional police, PAC , and Home Guard forces were strategically deployed under gazetted officers within zones or sectors. Similarly, in Sambhal and Bareilly, the Eid-ul-Azha namaaz was held peacefully amid heavy police deployment. "We had a peace committee meeting for Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone agreed to not sacrifice in public places. We have set up a three-tier security system and we spoke to maulanas, muftis, and representatives of mosques. There was an agreement to not sacrifice animals at public places and 19 designated places were agreed upon for sacrifice," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told reporters at the Eidgah. In Amethi, prayers were conducted at 367 mosques and Eidgahs, with different timings established to ensure peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik assured that people were celebrating the festival with great joy while maintaining peace.

Convicted child killer mom kicked out of Arizona court room by judge: 'Take her out'
A 51-year-old woman, Lori Vallow Daybell, who is already serving time for multiple murder convictions, was removed from an Arizona courtroom on Friday after a heated exchange with the judge during her ongoing attempted murder trial, reported the New York Post. The woman, known as the 'Doomsday mom,' is representing herself in the case and is accused of conspiring to kill her niece's ex-husband, Brandon Boudreaux. The incident reportedly took place on Oct. 2, 2019, when Boudreaux said he was shot at while driving home in Gilbert, Arizona. Prosecutors allege Vallow Daybell and her brother, Alex Cox, plotted the attack, with Cox firing the shot that narrowly missed Boudreaux's head. Tensions escalated in the courtroom when Vallow Daybell attempted to argue for an additional hearing to present character evidence in her defence. 'Do we get a hearing on what 404b (character evidence) can come in,' Vallow Daybell asked, as reported by East Idaho News. 'If I opened the door, do I get a hearing do we stop the trial and I get a hearing?' Judge Justin Beresky responded sharply, stating a short hearing could be held but warned that such evidence would allow prosecutors to bring up her past murder convictions. 'If you are going to introduce how you have great character and good character we will have a short hearing on what evidence they can bring in to rebut that character which could include that you have been convicted of four murders,' Beresky said. Beresky warned that her right to represent herself could be revoked if her behavior continued. 'Ms. Daybell, if you continue to ask lines of questions where I've sustained an objection, into areas where I've sustained an objection, if you continue to speak over me or the prosecutor … I may be forced to revoke your pro se status,' he said, as reported by Vallow Daybell had previously chosen to invoke her pro se status before the trial began. The proceedings started with jury selection on May 30. On the second day, proceedings were paused when she claimed to be ill. She later appeared in court in a wheelchair on June 2, crying and stating she felt nauseous. However, Judge Beresky found no medical documentation to support her claims and ordered the trial to continue. During her cross-examination of Boudreaux, Vallow Daybell questioned him about their relationship and her character. Boudreaux testified that they often argued and did not have a good relationship, according to Vallow Daybell was convicted in 2023 of the murders of her two youngest children, Joshua 'JJ' Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16. Their remains were found on the property of Chad Daybell, her fifth husband. Both were also found guilty of murdering Chad's former wife, Tammy Daybell, in October 2019.
