The New Orleans Saints are only 97 days away from the official start to their 59th NFL season. On September 7, the Saints will host the Arizona Cardinals in their 2025-26 regular season opener.

Sporting uniform number 97 for the Saints this year is defensive tackle Khristian Boyd, who is in his second season with the team and in the league. Here's a look back at the other players that have worn 97 during a regular season game for the Saints.

• Jumpy Geathers, DE (1984-89)
• Renaldo Turnbull, LB/DE (1990-96)
• La'Roi Glover, DT (1997-2001)
• Jonathan Sullivan, DT (2003-05)
• Josh Cooper, DE (2006-07)
• Jeff Charleston, DE (2008-11)
• Glenn Foster, DE (2013-14)
• Sam Barrington, LB (2016)
• Al-Quadin Muhammad, DE (2017)
• Mario Edwards, DE (2019)
• Malcolm Roach, DT (2020-23)
• Khristian Boyd, DT (2024-present)

The first to wear 97 in Saints history was Geathers, an underrated pass rusher for one of the league's outstanding defenses in the 1980s. Geathers had 26 sacks in his six years with New Orleans, including 21.5 in his first three years.

New Orleans selected Turnbull in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He had 9 sacks as a pass rush specialist in his first season, then succeeded the iconic Pat Swilling after a trade three years later in 1993.
Turnbull had a team-high 13 sacks that season to earn a Pro Bowl berth, but never had the same fearsome impact of Swilling. In seven years with New Orleans, the longest to wear 97 in team history, Turnbull totaled 44.5 sacks and forced 9 fumbles.

Glover joined New Orleans in 1997 and would be a key cog in one of the NFL's most disruptive defensive lines. In his five years with the Saints, he had 50 sacks, including an NFL-best 17 in 2000 that ties him with Swilling for the single season franchise record.

Over his last three seasons with New Orleans, Glover had an eye-popping 42 tackles for loss. Glover was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2013.
The sixth overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, Sullivan is considered one of the biggest draft busts in franchise history. He played only three seasons for the Saints before being completely out of the league. In that disappointing span, he had only 1.5 sacks and 5 stops for loss.

After Geathers, Turnbull, and Glover, the Saints had little success with the number 97. Charleston, Foster, and Edwards all had decent stints but were unable to significantly develop. Muhammad is the forgotten member of the Saints outstanding 2017 draft class. He spent only one year with the team before having success in other stops.

Roach was a nice undrafted addition in 2020. In his four years with the team he didn't fill up a stat sheet. However, he was a solid rotational player and extremely underrated run defender.
After Roach departed, the Saints plummeted to an abysmal 31st against the run last season. Now in his second year with the team, Boyd will need to showcase his interior power to improve that rush defense if he hopes to make the squad.

Pedro Pagés hits a 2-run HR, Sonny Gray pitches into 7th inning as Cardinals beat Dodgers 5-0

ST. LOUIS -- Pedro Pagés hit a two-run homer, Sonny Gray pitched into the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 Friday night in a game that started after a 1 hour, 17 minute rain delay. Willson Contreras hit his sixth homer of the season in the eighth inning off Chris Stratton, who was re-signed by Los Angeles before the game, and Nolan Arenado had three hits to help St. Louis improve to a National League-best 21-9 since May 4. Gray (7-1) allowed eight hits and struck out five without walking a batter in 6 1/3 innings to earn his second win against the Dodgers in eight career starts against them. JoJo Romero, Phil Maton and Steven Matz combined to pitch 2 2/3 innings in relief to secure the Cardinals' eighth shutout of the season. Pagés lined the first pitch he saw from Justin Wrobleski (1-2) over the left-center field bullpen in the second inning for his fifth home run of the season to put St. Louis ahead 2-0. Brendan Donovan blooped a two-out, two-run single to center field in the fifth inning to push the Cardinals' lead to 4-0. Wrobleski allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in a career-best six innings after being recalled from triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the game. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts each singled to lead off the third inning. However, Gray struck out Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández, and Max Muncy flew out to right field to end the Dodgers' threat. Gray has tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the sixth inning of his start on May 25 against Arizona. Gray has not allowed a run in four of his last six starts. Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-4, 2.39 ERA) is scheduled to face Cardinals RHP Erick Fedde (3-5, 3.82) on Saturday. ___

Seattle man charged with string of burglaries at homes of NFL and MLB stars

Seattle man charged with string of burglaries at homes of NFL and MLB stars originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia A Seattle man was charged Friday with a string of burglaries at the homes of prominent current and former football and baseball players, marking the latest example of well-known athletes being targeted in home thefts. Earl Henderson Riley IV, 21, was charged with several counts of residential burglary in both occupied and unoccupied homes, along with first-degree robbery, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Prosecutors say Riley was the ringleader in a series of burglaries that started in February and involved stealing more than $6,000 in Louis Vuitton bags from Seattle Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo's home and over $194,000 in high end purses and jewelry from the home of the team's center fielder Julio Rodriguez. The thefts also involved taking several watches worth more than $100,000 from former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman's home and a burglary at the home of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell, who is from Washington, although nothing was stolen in that instance, according to court documents. Prosecutors say there was also an attempted burglary at baseball Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez's home. 'All people deserve to feel safe in their homes, and our office will continue to hold people accountable for criminal behavior,' King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion said in a statement. There have been a slew of burglaries at the homes of well-known professional athletes across the U.S. in recent months. The players have been targeted because of the high-end products believed to be in their homes and sometimes the thefts happen when they are away with their teams for road games. The FBI has warned sports leagues about crime organizations targeting professional athletes. The NFL and NBA have also issued security alerts after burglaries at the homes of such star athletes as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. In a memo obtained by The Associated Press in November, the NFL said the homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become 'increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.' Riley is being held in the King County Jail on $1 million bail. It was not immediately clear whether he has a lawyer. The King County Department of Public Defense did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press and a spokesperson from the prosecuting attorney's office did not know whether Riley had a lawyer. The charges were the result of a monthslong investigation in which the county's prosecuting attorney's office worked with six police jurisdictions. Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Gary Ernsdorff said in a statement that their work is not over. 'We still want to go and identify everybody who was involved and see if there are additional people that we can have sufficient evidence to charge,' he said. Riley is expected to enter his initial plea in court during his arraignment June 16. He has another pending case in King County Superior Court in which he is charged with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree.

Colts Make Grim Anthony Richardson Injury Announcement

Colts Make Grim Anthony Richardson Injury Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Since being drafted No. 4 overall by the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, quarterback Anthony Richardson has yet to play a full season. Advertisement The 23-year-old missed 13 games during his rookie season after suffering a concussion and a season-ending injury to his right shoulder. Last season, he didn't suffer a major injury (he did miss one game with a hip sprain), but he was benched for six games for ineffectiveness in favor of Joe Flacco. Though Flacco is now in Cleveland, Richardson still isn't the unquestioned starter after the Colts signed former No. 6 overall pick Daniel Jones in the offseason to push and compete with Richardson in 2025. Advertisement 'Per Shane Steichen - QB Anthony Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury and will not participate in mini-camp next week,' the Colts announced on X. Richardson, who threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season while rushing for another 499 yards and six touchdowns, reportedly experienced pain in his throwing shoulder after practice last week during OTAs. After getting his shoulder evaluated, Richardson was deemed to have reaggravated the same AC joint he injured during his rookie year and had surgery on, according to the Colts. Steichen didn't provide any sort of timetable for Richardson's return but said he expects it be to around when training camp starts in mid-to-late July. He's not expected to need another surgery. Advertisement Dating back to his college days with the Florida Gators, Richardson has a questionable medical history. He missed two games in September of 2021 with a hamstring strain and another game in November with a knee meniscus tear.
