Prince Faisal bin Farhan will become the first Saudi foreign minister to visit the occupied West Bank on Sunday, a diplomatic source told AFP, as the Gaza war drags on and Riyadh pushes for Palestinian statehood.
The Saudi top diplomat will lead a delegation to Ramallah, a Palestinian embassy source said, the first such trip since Israel first occupied the Palestinian territory in 1967.
Prince Faisal's trip was revealed as Israel vowed to build a "Jewish Israeli state" in the West Bank, after doubling down on plans to expand settlements there.
"A ministerial delegation led by the minister of foreign affairs will go to Ramallah on Sunday," the embassy source told AFP.
Saudi Arabia sent a lower-level delegation to Ramallah in September 2023, its first since 1967, not long before Hamas' October 7 attack triggered the Gaza war.
International backlash has been growing since Israel resumed its offensive in Gaza in March, with a humanitarian crisis spiraling and the U.N. warning of famine throughout the territory.
Next month, Saudi Arabia and France will co-chair an international conference meant to resurrect the two-state solution at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Nearly 150 countries recognize the State of Palestine, which has observer status at the U.N. but is not a full member as the Security Council has not voted to admit it.
In May 2024, Ireland, Norway and Spain took the step of recognizing a Palestinian state, but other European governments, including France, have not.
President Emmanuel Macron said in April that France could recognize a Palestinian state in June.
Macron said at the time that he wished to organize the New York conference to encourage recognition of the State of Palestine, "but also a recognition of Israel from states that currently do not".
Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam's holiest sites and the world's biggest oil exporter, was said to be close to recognizing Israel before the start of the Gaza war.
U.S. President Donald Trump, during a visit to Riyadh this month, called Saudi normalization with Israel "my fervent hope and wish, and even my dream".
"You'll do it in your own time, and that's what I want, that's what you want," he said.
Last September, de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stated clearly that Saudi Arabia would not recognize Israel without an independent Palestinian state.
This position was reaffirmed in November at a joint Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit where Israel was accused of "genocide" in Gaza.
On Friday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed to build a "Jewish Israeli state" in the occupied West Bank, a day after the government announced the creation of 22 new settlements there.

Iraq suspends licenses of 10 satellite channels for "fomenting sectarianism and violence"

Iraq suspended the licenses of 10 satellite television channels, including Qatar-based Al-Jazeera, for promoting violence and sectarianism, a senior official at the country's media watchdog said on Sunday. "We took a decision to suspend the license of some satellite channels that adopted language encouraging violence and sectarianism," Mujahid Abu al-Hail of the Communications and Media Commission told AFP. "It means stopping their work in Iraq and their activities, so they cannot cover events in Iraq or move around," Hail said. The suspended channels included pan-Arab network Al-Jazeera and Sharqiya, a leading channel in Iraq. The move comes after a wave of violence that began on Tuesday with clashes between security forces and Sunni Arab protesters in northern Iraq that has killed a total of more than 215 people. The violence is the deadliest so far linked to demonstrations that broke out in Sunni areas of the Shiite-majority country more than four months ago. The Sunni protesters have called for the resignation of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and railed against authorities for allegedly targeting their community, including what they say are wrongful detentions and accusations of involvement in terrorism.

General Saree Announces Missile Strikes on Ben Gurion Airport, Enemy Targets in Tel Aviv, Ashdod and Eilat

The missile force of Yemeni Armed Forces carried out a specific military operation targeting Lod Airport in the occupied area of Jaffa (Tel Aviv) using a hypersonic ballistic missile, according to a statement read by the military spokesman General Yahya Saree. The operation comes in the context of supporting the oppressed Palestinian people and their Mujahideen, and in rejection of the crime of genocide perpetrated by the Zionist enemy against the people in the Gaza Strip, General Saree said. The operation has successfully achieved its objective, causing millions of herds of usurping Zionists to flee to shelters and halting airport operations, General Saree added. The UAV force of Yemeni Armed Forces carried out three military operations targeting three vital Israeli enemy targets in the areas of Yaffa, Ashdod, and Umm al-Rashrash (Eilat) in the occupied Palestine using three drones, he noted. The Yemeni Armed Forces, after successfully imposing a partial ban on air traffic at Lod Airport, are working, with Allah's help, to impose a complete ban on air traffic at the aforementioned airport during the coming period, Saree warned. General Saree warned the remaining airlines that have not yet complied with the ban to take this into consideration to preserve the safety of their aircraft and customers. 'Our operations, with trust in Allah and reliance on Allah, will not cease until the aggression against our steadfast people in the Gaza Strip stops and the siege on them is lifted.' Israeli media outlets had reported on Sunday that sirens sounded heavily in occupied Al-Quds and Tel Aviv after a ballistic missile fire from Yemen, pushing millions of settlers into the basements.
