BCCI Expresses Interest To Host 2027 World Test Championship Final: Report
Last Updated:
The BCCI has expressed interest in hosting the 2027 World Test Championship Finals.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed interest to host the 2027 World Test Championship Finals. The WTC final has been held by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the past two as well as the upcoming edition in June between between Australia and South Africa.
As per a report in The Guardian, BCCI want to stage the WTC final after the current WTC cycle and has submitted an intention to bid for the 2027 final at the ICC Chief Executives Committee meeting in Zimbabwe last month.
'The Guardian has learned that India expressed their intention to bid for the 2027 final at a meeting of the ICC's chief executives committee in Zimbabwe last month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India is represented on the ICC committee by its chief executive, Arun Singh Dhumal, while his predecessor Jay Shah is chair of the ICC, so a formal Indian bid would be regarded as a fait accompli," the report in The Guardian stated.
The 2021 World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand was played at the Rose Bowl in Hampshire, England, while the following year, India andEngland face off at The Oval in the WTC final.
This year, the final will be held between Australia and South Africa at Lords from June 11 to 25. Tickets for this year's final have already been sold out for the first four days. The ICC though is concerned about poor attendance if the 2027 final is held in India.
'While the England and Wales Cricket Board had not assumed it would host the WTC final in perpetuity, the English summer and a strong domestic ticket market regardless of which teams qualify makes it a natural venue. The ECB is understood to be pushing for a quick decision, as it will need time to arrange an additional home Test for England in 2027 if the WTC final is taken elsewhere. The ICC has concerns about taking the WTC final to India however, chiefly the prospect of poor ticket sales should India fail to qualify. Next month's final at Lord's is sold out for the first four days, while the 2023 final at the Oval was also sold out despite England not being involved," the report added.
The 2025-2027 Cricket World Cup (WTC) cycle will continue with the nine-team single division format. The tournament will get underway with India's five-Test tour to England, starting June 20.
However, it will be intersting if India secures the right to host the 2027 WTC final, and Pakistan qualifies for the final.

Letters to The Editor — June 7, 2025
Celebration to tragedy I would like to share my grief with the family members of the persons who died and also the injured during the celebrations of RCB's win in the Indian Premier League 2025. It is distressing to write such a letter. The roadshow was unwarranted. Basic crowd control measures were lacking. There was hardly a stretcher or an ambulance in sight and the number of policemen was insufficient. The fact that lakhs of people had converged around the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, unmindful of the risks involved, also highlights the degree of unemployment in the country. There was no need for such a hype over the victory of the RCB. It only shows how a great sport has lapsed into a commercial enterprise, so much so that whenever a boundary is hit or a wicket is taken, there are cheerleaders dancing. To add to it, players who receive a handsome amount also easily give in to advertisements. It is time regulatory measures are brought in, either by the BCCI or the government, to retain the quality of the sport. It would also not be an exaggeration to underscore the point that the Opposition political parties are trying to gain mileage out of this immense tragedy. N.G.R. Prasad, Chennai

Scott Boland All But Confirms Australia's Pacers For WTC Final: "All Want To..."
Australia's seasoned quick Scott Boland is still in the dark about his potential appearance in the World Test Championship final against South Africa on Tuesday at the Lord's, a venue where he would "love" to play. With match figures of 5/105, the 36-year-old was one of Australia's premier pacers when they lifted their maiden WTC mace at The Oval in 2023 against India. He boosted his credentials against India by scalping 21 wickets in three appearances as Australia celebrated its first Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph in a decade. Despite his exploits, Boland has found himself in a neck-to-neck battle with IPL-winning seamer Josh Hazlewood for one spot in the defending champions' pace setup against the Proteas. With less than a week left for the enticing contest, Boland has yet to receive the green light from the selectors about his spot in the playing XI. "I haven't had any chats with them (selectors). My goal coming into the last two months is just to get myself and my body in the position where I can put my hand up and be ready to go if it (selection) goes my way," Boland said in London on Thursday, as quoted from ICC. "I probably felt like back into the Shield season (Australian domestic red-ball competition), my knee was sort of not wearing away but wasn't going how I wanted it to go and didn't feel like I was bowling how I wanted, but now I feel like I'm in a really good spot that I can bowl how I want to bowl. It's pulling up really well, so that's all I can do, and I just want to make that decision (for selectors) as hard as possible," he added. Boland snuck his first training session with Australia on Wednesday while Hazlewood linked up with the team in London after his title-winning campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday. The 36-year-old is aware of the carnage that a fully fit Hazlewood can inflict on the opposition. However, he pushed his case by citing his recent stellar performances for Australia in the Test format. "I feel like I had a couple of really strong games (during the Border-Gavaskar series), but Josh is obviously a world-class bowler. He's one of the best bowlers in the world, coming off a really good IPL, so I'm sure he'll be doing the same thing here (to push his case for selection). Obviously, we all want to play, but there's probably not room for all of us," Boland said. If Boland earns a spot in Australia's playing XI, he will make his first appearance at the iconic Lord's. For him, it will be a "pretty special" moment to bowl at the 'Home of Cricket'. "I'd love to play at Lord's. I think everyone's looking forward to getting there for training in a few days' time and then getting to the game, as it's a pretty special place for cricket," he added.
