The force has since launched an urgent investigation into the burglary which saw thieves steal an "unknown" amount of personal items.
The value of the stolen goods is not yet clear.
Pitt was not at home at the time of the break, sources told NBC.
Police are searching for three suspect who climbed over the fence and broke in through the house's front windows, they added.

Pitt's latest public appearance was at the European premiers of F1 in Leicester Square, London where he stood for photographs alongside Tom Cruise and the film's cast.
In his new flick, he plays veteran driver Sonny Hayes, who comes out of retirement to rescue buddy Ruben Cervantes' (Javier Bardem) ailing race team, years after a near-fatal crash.
British F1 ace Lewis Hamilton is a producer and the film, which has garnered mixed reviews, is directed by Joseph Kosinski and the rest of the team behind Top Gun: Maverick, except Tom Cruise.
Sonny is shown as a washed-up 'old man' who has fallen into gambling and only rediscovers his love for the sport when he faces competition from a younger driver.
In an interview with Hollywood podcaster Dax Shepard, Brad recently admitted he was similarly lost after Angelina, 50, filed for divorce in September 2016.

She cited irreconcilable differences around the same time as the FBI and the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services investigated Brad for alleged child abuse after an incident on the family private jet.
It was reported that the star had lost his temper when their son Maddox stepped in to stand up for his mother during a fight.
One source claimed the actor 'was drunk' and the situation quickly 'escalated'.
During the probe, Brad voluntarily completed drug testing.
Meanwhile, two of his kids stopped using his last name.
Brad, who was raised in Springfield, Missouri, was cleared of all allegations.
But his personal life was in turmoil, and led to him seeking professional help.
However, he recently revealed he was rapped for discussing his enthusiasm for Alcoholics Anonymous in a New York Times interview.
Explaining why he wanted to talk about the closed-door sessions, Brad told Dax's Armchair Expert podcast: 'It was a men's group, it was AA, it was when I was first getting sober.
'I just thought it was incredible, men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches and a lot of humour.
'I thought it was a really special experience.
'So I do this interview, and I got admonished by someone from the higher-ups, saying, 'It's anonymous'.'

Lewis Hamilton says Brad Pitt's character in F1 film has echoes of James Hunt
F1: The Movie, of which seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is an executive producer, was released this week. Pitt, 61, plays the role of veteran driver Sonny Hayes, who returns to the grid after a long absence, with fictional team APX GP. Hunt, the 1976 world champion, was famed for his charisma and maverick approach to motor racing. Speaking ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, Hamilton said: 'Firstly, I didn't write it. The writer, Ehren (Kruger), I am sure he was looking at people like James Hunt. 'He wanted a really cool character and he was looking at the characters from back in the (Ayrton) Senna days, so a combination of those drivers and I would say the James Hunt vibe. 'I don't know if that is what he ultimately chose, but that is the character I feel resembles very closely to him (Hayes) – a very cool, calm, good-looking cat and an elder statesmen within the team.' Pitt's rookie team-mate Joshua Pearce is played by British actor Damson Idris. Filming took place across multiple races over the last two seasons, and F1 chiefs hope the movie will follow the popularity of Netflix's Drive To Survive series in cracking America. The film premiered in New York last Monday and Hamilton was in Times Square along with the majority of the grid's drivers and cast. He continued: 'When you are reading the script it is hard to see how it will play out, but then to be at the premiere in the middle of Times Square and having Brad up on the screen with a Formula One car and the F1 logo, I was like, 'holy crap, this is absolutely insane'. 'That experience was great and for me a moment I will never forget. 'I had seen the film so many times on my laptop, watching every different section for so long and making comments as we edited and improved it, and I was like, 'I have seen it already so I am going to leave and go to dinner', but I decided to stay and to see everyone's reaction after it finished was one of the coolest things and really special.'

Police are investigating a break-in at a home reportedly owned by Brad Pitt, who has been on a globe-spanning promo tour for his new movie, F1. The Los Angeles police department confirmed they responded to a break-in Wednesday night at a house on the 2300 block of North Edgemont Street in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Three suspects broke into the residence through the front window, ransacked the home and fled with miscellaneous property, said officer Drake Madison. Madison said he could not identify who owned or lived in the home, and no information is currently available on what was stolen. Pitt reportedly bought the home for $5.5m in April 2023, according to Traded, a commercial real estate website. A representative for Pitt declined comment. Pitt has been out of the country on a promotional tour for the F1 movie. He attended the international premiere in London on Monday. The burglary was first reported Thursday by NBC News.
