President Sulyok: Hungarian science has a glorious future
The president helped welcome MTA's 200th anniversary of its foundation.
President Tamás Sulyok said there is every reason to believe that Hungarian science has a glorious future.
The MTA is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its foundation, and in his speech in the renovated Ceremonial Hall of the Academy's headquarters, President Sulyok said that the founder of the MTA, István Széchenyi, had embraced the cause of the entire nation. Many in the 18th century embraced the idea of establishing a learned society and elevating the Hungarian language in the Carpathian Basin, he added.
In the past two centuries, 'great Hungarian inventions and creations that amaze the world' emerged one after another, he said, referring to innovations from the invention of the match to the latest attosecond device in laser physics.
The president also mentioned the numerous top prizes that Hungarian scientists have been awarded around the world.
Balázs Hankó, the culture and innovation minister, said that the Hungarian scientific community had come about 200 years ago thanks to the responsible leadership's 'commitment to the Hungarian nation's desire for freedom'.
He said there was not a single field of science that Hungarian scientists and innovators had not raised to a higher level.
'The Hungarian Academy of Sciences has played a decisive role over the past 200 years … and it will continue to do so,' he said.
The minister added that the primary task of the MTA today was to 'strengthen our self-determination for the sake of our nation'.

Palkovics: Hungary's National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence is among country's top research institutions
László Palkovics, the government commissioner for artificial intelligence (AI), said Hungary's National Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (MILAB) is among the country's top research institutions. Speaking at the SZTAKI (Computer and Automation Research Institute) in Budapest on Monday, Palkovics said MILAB is tightly linked to the Artificial Intelligence Coalition established by companies, universities, and scientific workshops in 2018, adding that it collaborates with other national laboratories that make use of AI. In a few weeks, the AI labs will have access to a dashboard showing who is doing what in the field of AI in Hungary, he said, adding that Hungary was at the forefront in this area. Hungarian research institutes, Palkovics noted, have been involved in artificial intelligence since the 1970s and 1980s, which is why Hungary is well-positioned in AI research and development. In 2020, Hungary was the fourth country in Europe, after Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, to develop an AI strategy at the government level. A revision of the strategy will be completed soon, he added. Laszlo Bodis, deputy state secretary for innovation, said AI was not just a technological innovation but also carried the potential for economic and social breakthroughs. MILAB, he added, is bringing together ten partners, and they are identifying how to harness AI for the benefit of the economy.

Hankó: Brussels wants to erase our Judeo-Christian culture
Balázs Hankó, the minister for culture and innovation, said Brussels 'wants to erase Europe's roots, our Judeo-Christian culture'. In a speech at the CPAC Hungary 2025 conference in Budapest on Friday, the minister said Hungarian culture provides a national identity that transcends borders, and higher and vocational education guarantee knowledge, work and 'a mission in service of our communities'. He added that science and innovation were 'what determines our sovereignty', and families were the future. 'It is these cornerstones of our Christian national identity that Brussels is attacking and wants to distort,' Minister Hankó said, adding that Brussels wanted to 'make the discriminatory world of abnormality dominant over normality and order'. Minister Hankó said this was the explanation for Brussels's exclusion of university students and researchers who pushed back against its influence from international cooperation programs, and this was why Hungary was being punished for banning 'gender propaganda' from schools. Minister Hankó said those who were fighting for their nation and justice would never waver, adding that 'this is how we patriots are.'

President Sulyok: 2025 World Expo in Osaka not only inspires but also shows the way
In his speech opening the National Day of Hungary on Saturday, President Tamás Sulyok said the 2025 World Expo taking place in Osaka, Japan, from 13 April to 13 October 'not only inspires but shows the way and emboldens action'. Commenting on the topic of the expo, the 'super-smart society' aimed at harnessing information technology to benefit people, President Sulyok said societal changes entailed 'searching for new ways to make the future livable … [with] the use of cutting-edge technologies.' The president said the main issues determining the future would be 'ways to promote the peaceful coexistence of nations and cultures, respect for the dignity of human life, the protection of the Earth and a sustainable environment' and the role of communities. The president praised Japan as 'an inspiration to the world culturally and economically'. He also said the 'special relationship between Hungary and Japan' must be further strengthened. Takeuchi Shinji, Japan's state secretary for economy, trade and industry, noted that Hungary and Japan launched diplomatic relations in 1869, and had been 'deepening its friendly ties for more than 150 years, with excellent cooperation in many areas in economy, politics, culture and science.'
