Builder promised ‘dream pools,' but bilked customers out of $600K, AL officials say
An Alabama-based contractor promised to build beautiful pools for multiple customers, but after receiving their deposits, he never returned to finish the jobs, officials said.
Now, Gregory Kirk is sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple property crimes in which he stole more than $600,000 from customers, the Alabama Attorney General's Office said in a June 3 news release.
McClatchy News reached out to Pristine Pools LLC on June 6 but did not receive an immediate response.
According to court records, Kirk ran pool construction businesses in Madison County under different names, WHNT reported.
He filed for bankruptcy after receiving thousands of dollars for projects and then opened another similar business under a different name, without finishing previous projects, the outlet reported.
'Several consumers entrusted Kirk with large sums of money, hoping to build their dream pools. Instead, they were met with heartbreak,' Attorney General Steve Marshall said in the release. 'He betrayed their trust, deceived them, and stole their hard-earned savings.'
Officials said he forged a contractor's license, used a fake building permit and fraudulently used a customer's credit card.
Madison County is about a 110-mile drive northeast from Birmingham.

LONDON (AP) — An art expert who appeared on the BBC's Bargain Hunt show was sentenced Friday to two and a half years in prison for failing to report his sale of pricey works to a suspected financier of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group. Oghenochuko Ojiri, 53, pleaded guilty to eight offenses under the Terrorism Act 2000. The art sales took place between October 2020 and December 2021. Ojiri, who also appeared on the BBC's Antiques Road Trip, faced a possible sentence of five years in prison in the hearing at London's Central Criminal Court, which is better known as the Old Bailey. In addition to the prison term, Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb said Ojiri faces an additional year on license. Ojiri sold about 140,000 pounds ($185,000) worth of artworks to Nazem Ahmad, a diamond and art dealer sanctioned by the U.K. and U.S. as a Hezbollah financier. The sanctions were designed to prevent anyone in the U.K. or U.S. from trading with Ahmad or his businesses. 'This prosecution, using specific Terrorism Act legislation, is the first of its kind and should act as a warning to all art dealers that we can, and will, pursue those who knowingly do business with people identified as funders of terrorist groups,' said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command. The Met's investigation into Ojiri was carried out alongside Homeland Security in the U.S., which is conducting a wider investigation into alleged money laundering by Ahmad using shell companies. Ahmad was sanctioned in 2019 by the U.S. Treasury, which said he was a prominent Lebanon-based money launderer involved in smuggling blood diamonds, which are mined in conflict zones and sold to finance violence. Two years ago, the U.K. Treasury froze Ahmad's assets because he financed Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shiite militant organization that has been designated an international terrorist group. Following Ojiri's arrest in April 2023, the Met obtained a warrant to seize a number of artworks, including a Picasso and Andy Warhol paintings, belonging to Ahmad and held in two warehouses in the U.K. The collection, valued at almost 1 million pounds, is due to be sold with the funds to be reinvested back into the police, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Home Office.

Cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles ablaze off Alaska's coast
By Dean Murray A significant maritime emergency is unfolding as a cargo ship carrying over 3,000 vehicles is ablaze off Alaska. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said Friday (June 6) they are continuing to respond to a fire aboard the Morning Midas vessel, located approximately 340 miles southwest of the city of Adak. The 600-foot vessel, carrying vehicles including dozens of electric and hybrid models, caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a swift rescue operation. All 22 crew members evacuated safely into a life raft and were rescued by the nearby merchant vessel Cosco Hellas. No injuries have been reported among the crew, who remain aboard the Cosco Hellas as it continues its voyage. In an update Friday, the USCG said their HC-130J Super Hercules aircrew conducted an overflight and confirmed the vessel was still burning, though there were no signs of the ship taking on water or listing. The full extent of the damage remains unknown. London-based Zodiac Maritime, one of the world's largest shipping companies, manages the Morning Midas. They are coordinating with salvage specialists who are expected to arrive at the site early next week. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has issued a Broadcast Notice to Mariners to alert vessels in the area and continues to monitor the situation closely. The Morning Midas was en route from Yantai, China, to a major Mexican port when the incident occurred. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
