Rockfordians kick off St. Patrick's Day early with parade and celebrations
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — It is just two days away from St. Patrick's Day, but that did not stop Rockfordians from celebrating a little early on Saturday.
The Irish Marching Society led the parade through downtown Rockford and stopped at Prairie Street Brewing Company to continue the celebration.
Windy weather did not stop paradegoers from enjoying the festivities. People from all around the stateline came to celebrate.
'We're from Oregon which is about 30 minutes away from Rockford, and we made the trip to enjoy all of the festivities of Rockford and just loved to see the downtown be revitalized and everyone enjoying it, just a great experience,' said the Knobloch family.
The family was just one of many who continued the celebration at Prairie Street Brewing. The event included live music, a kid's area and games at Prairie Street across multiple floors of the brewery.
The pub's manager said he was happy to provide paradegoers with food and drinks after the parade.
'We're right downtown, we've got the best spot right by the river, and we definitely anywhere from people stopping out for some drinks to hosting private events here, we definitely are a spot to come congregate together as a community,' said Robert Sanner.
'Our goal for today was to throw the biggest party possible and make it as accommodating as possible that way people with families could come through people as individuals could come through and definitely could come through with their friends,' Sanner explained.
Sanner said St. Patrick's Day is one of their busiest times of the year.

How do I avoid ticks and mosquitoes this summer?
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The mild winter season was great for drivers, but residents can expect an influx of insects this summer as a result. The Winnebago County Health Department recently mosquitoes containing West Nile Virus, but it came earlier than expected. 'We've seen West Nile in our area for over 25 years,' Environmental Health Supervisor Ryan Kerch said. 'This is a bit earlier than we normally see it, so we're just sending out the reminder to everybody that mosquitoes can carry this disease.' Kerch is encouraging homeowners to limit areas of water around the house. 'The mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile virus like to lay their eggs in areas of stagnant water around the home; anything that can hold rainwater,' Kerch said. 'So, getting rid of those things will do a lot to get rid of bad mosquitoes.' Tick season is also underway, and experts from the Boone County Conservation District are extending warnings to those looking to hit the trails this summer. 'Wear long sleeves, long pants, and tuck your pants into your socks,' Executive Director Josh Sage said. 'Any type of bug repellent also helps.' Ticks like to hide in the hairline, behind the ears, behind the kneecaps, and on the backs of the arms, according to Sage. He encouraged hikers to check themselves and their backpacks for ticks. 'As long as you are diligent about doing tick checks after you come in from being outside, you'll be fine,' Sage said. 'One other thing you can do when you're out hiking is walk down the middle of the trail and try and avoid the tall grass or the trees overhead.' Both Sage and Kerch said they aren't trying to stray people away from going outside. 'We're not telling people not to enjoy the outdoors again,' Kerch said. 'Just take those precautions, use those protective measures to try and avoid it, too, in the first place.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The weekend forecast is looking soggy and cooler for New England
This is also the time of year when steady precipitation that lasts an entire day starts to become less common, and indeed, by the time we get to the end of next month, showers are typically the way we get our rainfall. This weekend will also mark Advertisement This weekend, low pressure is going to head up into Northern New England. A trailing cold front will slip through our area Saturday night and be off the coast by Sunday. This is the primary driver of our weekend weather. When the center of storms moves to our north, we typically experience more showery precipitation rather than a full day of steady rain. Advertisement Widespread rain is likely across New England on Saturday. Boston Globe In actuality, we haven't had over an inch of precipitation in a single day since St. Patrick's Day, when 1.75 inches fell. For April, you would have to go back to the end of April 2023 to find a day when over an inch of precipitation fell in the fourth month. Saturday If you have an early field game on Saturday you might be able to get it in before the showers arrive, but I think after 8 or 9 a.m., the risk of shower activity will increase enough that some sports games may be canceled. It appears that anywhere from a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain is likely before it comes to an end Saturday evening. Because of the cloud cover on Saturday, temperatures will be cooler and after being in the low to mid-70s on Friday with sunshine, followed by increasing clouds, Saturday features temperatures in the mid-60s. Saturday will see temperatures in the mid-60s across Southern New England, cooler near the Cape. Boston Globe Sunday This weather system should clear out on Sunday and we'll be left with partly sunny skies. When you get up in the morning, temperatures should be in the 40s and it'll be a little bit breezy. I think winds are going to be a bit gusty during the day with temperatures in the 50s to the lower 60s, which is just about the 30-year average for this time of the year. Highs on Sunday should be in the low to mid-60s across most of Southern New England. Boston Globe Early next week features more dry weather along with temperatures trending milder as readings get into the low 70s and perhaps even a little higher before trending cooler for the first weekend in May. More on that next week. Advertisement Weekend breakdown Greater Boston: Sunshine and mild on Friday with showers arriving Saturday morning and temperatures in the 60s.
