Jonassen open to treatment option for Tze Yong
PETALING JAYA: Kenneth Jonassen is all for treatment abroad if it helps injured singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong return to court again.
Tze Yong will be undergoing surgery to repair his damaged anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and his recovery and return may take about a year.
Instead of going for treatment locally, former internationals Datuk Lee Chong Wei (singles) and Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) are suggesting for Tze Yong to look at the option of going abroad.
Jonassen, who was hired by Badminton Association of Malaysia to change the fortunes of Malaysian singles this year, wants what works best for Tze Yong.
'I would surely suggest the best possible solution which gives him the strongest chance to recover from the injury and return to world-class badminton,' said the Dane.
'And if this means he has to go overseas then yes, I would want that solution for him.'
Tze Yong had picked up the injury during the first round of the Malaysian Masters last month.
It was only his first tournament since making a comeback after a year of non-action following his back injury.
Meanwhile, Jonassen said that a plan to get foreign players to spar with the singles was still in the pipeline.
'I want to do it but every international top player has his own schedule – and this has to fit into our plans as well,' he said.
'It is and will always be an extra bonus if this arrangement can happen. There are however, other ways to develop players to the highest level too.'

NSFC chairman Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the appointment of 45-year-old Mohd Nidzam reflects the club's commitment to strengthening team preparations and setting a new, more progressive and sustainable direction. 'Mohd Nidzam is a highly experienced figure in the Malaysian football scene, both as a former national player and a high-profile coach. 'His expertise in youth development and modern tactical approaches is expected to empower NSFC in facing an increasingly competitive Super League,' he said in a statement today. Ex-international Wan Zack calls on locals to drop inferiority mindset
KUALA LUMPUR: New Penang FC signing Wan Zack Haikal Wan Noor believes Malaysian players can match foreign imports if they change their mentality. The 34-year-old winger insists local talent is not far behind in quality, but a mental block often holds them back. Wan Zack, who played for Japanese third-tier side Ryukyu FC in 2013, said the experience taught him never to feel inferior and to work harder to prove himself. "The new rule allowing 15 imports from the 2025-26 season shouldn't be seen as a problem," he said. "Local players just need to work harder and embrace the healthy competition. "Our quality isn't far off. But the problem is, we often think we're not on the same level — it's all in the mindset. "We have to change that, change our lifestyle and work hard to earn our spot." He added: "When I first went to Japan, it was tough for two weeks. But once I got into the rhythm, I saw that we can match the foreign players." Wan Zack, who recently signed with Penang for next season, is determined to prove his worth despite being in the twilight of his career. "I'm thankful that a club still wants me at 34, and I'd like to thank coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail for his trust," he said. "I know the competition here will be tough, but I'm ready to fight for my place and contribute to Penang's push for a better finish next season."
