'It will be very difficult': Karla Sofia Gascon on possibility of her return to US
Washington [US], April 28 (ANI): Actress Karla Sofia Gascon talked about her possible return to the US and expressed concern over the trans community "losing their freedom" around the world.
She also talked about her film 'Emilia Perez', according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gascon, the first trans woman to be nominated for a Best Actress in Oscar, had earlier faced backlash over resurfaced tweets containing anti-Islam and racist remarks, and later she apologised for her past actions and expressed her commitment to learning and growth.
Gascon, who was on track to make history as the first openly transgender actress to win an Academy Award, saw her chances dashed after journalist Sarah Hagi uncovered her questionable tweets from 2016.
The posts, which included derogatory comments about Islam, George Floyd, and the LGBTQ community, sparked widespread outrage and led to a backlash against Gascon.
On talking about her possibility of returning to the US, she said in Spanish, which was later translated to, "I'm looking forward to it. The question is whether, when I get to the United States, everything will be okay."
She continued, alluding to President Trump's executive orders that targeted transgender, nonbinary and intersex people, "I hope so, but if they don't let me in or they don't let me work because they consider that I am not a sufficiently qualified person or they want to discriminate against me because of my sexuality, then it will be very difficult," as per The Hollywood Reporter.
"But I hope so. I'm looking forward to doing millions of things in the United States because I think it's a wonderful country full of something that we have all wished for in this world, which is freedom, and we are losing it. We are losing it," she added, as per the outlet.
She also shared how 'Emilia Perez' has changed her life, saying, "Well, it has changed radically because it was a film that, for me, is already part of the history of cinema and that is going to be a cult film. Obviously, that brings with it an implicit responsibility, especially after everything that has happened around the film and around trans people."
"I think the moment takes on greater relevance," she added, "and we are in a very complicated and difficult time in which I sincerely feel like one of the first victims of all this hate."
She also opened up about her upcoming projects including, an Italian film The Life Lift where she plays a psychiatrist who embodies "the devil and god." She has another film in Argentina, one in Spain, and a French film about a blues singer attempting to adopt a girl from a refugee camp, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

SC refuses urgent hearing on Tamil Nadu's plea against alleged freezing of education scheme funds by Centre over NEP row
ANI 09 Jun 2025, 14:44 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday refused to list the Tamil Nadu government's plea against non-disbursal of education scheme funds under the Centre's Samagra Siksha Scheme for an urgent hearing. A bench of Justices PK Mishra and Manmohan stated that there was no urgency on the matter. Tamil Nadu recently approached the apex court seeking directions for the release of the education funds. In its plea, the state alleged that the Union government had frozen the disbursal of the said funds due to the state governments' refusal to implement the National Education Policy (NEP). In its plea, the Tamil Nadu government has sought the Court to declare that the National Education Policy, 2020, and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme are not binding on the state unless a formal agreement is entered into with the Union Government. The Tamil Nadu government further argued that its entitlement to funds under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme has been unlawfully made conditional on the implementation of these central schemes, which it considers to be unconstitutional, arbitrary, and illegal. 'The glaring reason for such non-disbursement is that the Defendant has linked the release of Samagra Shiksha Scheme funds with the implementation of 'National Education Policy' and 'NEP exemplary PM SHRI Schools' Scheme, despite the fact that these policies/schemes are separate schemes. That the reason of such apparent linkage is the fact that the MoU pertaining to the PM SHRI Schools Scheme dictates for implementation of the NEP-2020 in the Plaintiff State (Tamil Nadu) in its entirety which is not agreeable to the Plaintiff State due to the vociferous opposition to the Clause 4.13 of the NEP-2020 which envisages three-language formula', the plea read. Narendra Modi first took oath as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014, and is currently serving his third consecutive term. Last year, he took oath as Prime Minister on June 9 after winning elections for the third term. Recently, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the government's various achievements, including good governance, change in India's 'political culture,' and several bold decisions taken over the past 11 years. Addressing a press conference, Nadda said that Prime Minister Modi has changed the country's political culture and established a new normal and a new order. Nadda said, 'We are completing 11 years under PM Modi's leadership. It is very difficult to confine 11 years in a press conference. The work done under PM Modi's leadership is written in the golden words because of the unimaginable and unique works. PM Modi has changed the country's politics, political culture. "India is loud at home but lonely abroad": Congress' Pawan Khera slams BJP govt's "muscular foreign policy"
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Congress leader Pawan Khera came down heavily on the BJP-led NDA government over the foreign policy and diplomacy tactics, claiming that the dispensation's so-called 'muscular foreign policy' has collapsed under its own PR. Taking a jibe at the BJP's government, the Congress leader went on to say - 'India is loud at home but lonely abroad.' In a social media post on X, Khera pointed out several developments that according to him led to the 'collapse' of India's foreign policy, including funding to Pakistan from different world forums and organisations, China's backing to Pakistan, Nepal's claim on India's Kalapani territory, OIC's stance on Jammu and Kashmir and several others. Khera posted, 'Saudi Arabia suspending visas for 14 countries, including India, is just the latest blow in a steady collapse of India's foreign policy under Modi. China blocked naming the attackers at the UN. Pakistan won the backing from China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Malaysia, all demanding a 'fair probe.' He further pointed out, 'India's global standing is crumbling: 1. G7 excluded India over the Canada-Khalistan fallout. G20 saw no breakthrough. 2. Maldives turns hostile with 'India-Out' and a pro-China pivot 3. Sri Lanka and, Maldives lease strategic assets to Beijing 4. Nepal redrew its map to claim Indian territory 5. OIC and West Asia keep attacking India over Kashmir and Muslim rights 6. SCO and BRICS are now mouthpieces for China 7. Turkey even sent a warship in its support. Iran offered to mediate. Qatar, Kuwait, and Malaysia echoed Islamabad's line.'
