Ramokgopa predicts a load shedding free winter
CAPE TOWN - Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is predicting a load shedding free winter.
He expects the country's power plants to perform at the same capacity they did last winter, saying there's no reason for performance to regress.

Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group meeting in Cape Town on Wednesday, Ramokgopa did not want to give too much away, saying he plans to provide a detailed winter outlook next week.
"When we went into winter last year, we didn't have Kusile Unit 6, so we didn't have that 800 MW. The second one is that we didn't have Medupi 4. We will have Medupi 4 by the end of May, which has been out for about four years, so it's another 800mw. And then we are going to have the benefits of both Koeberg units. We are anticipating that Koeberg Unit Number 1 is going to come back around in July or so."
Ramokgopa says that at the winter peak, the country will have an additional 2500mw of electricity it didn't have last winter.
While the energy availability factor was not at optimal levels last month [April], Ramokgopa says the problems have been isolated.
"One of the reasons we found is post-outage failure, so you take the unit out on planned maintenance, when it comes back, it still has a significant number of challenges. So that's something the team led by the executive Mr Bheki Nxumalo is addressing. So I really don't foresee that we are going to perform below what we did last year."

IOL previously reported that this gas supply supports more than 13,000 direct jobs and reportedly contributes about 5% to the national GDP and that its continued decline threatens around 70,000 jobs. The committee emphasised the need for 'urgent and coordinated action to mitigate the challenge of the impending 'gas cliff' that faces South Africa.' It also noted that 'time is of the essence' with less than six years to implement necessary measures before the gas cliff materialises. "The looming supply shortage poses serious risks to the country's energy security, industrial output, and broader economic competitiveness," Committee Chairperson Nonkosi Mvana said. They explained how they aim to fund these expensive projects without increasing the national debt. SASOL shared its plans to use methane-rich gas as a temporary solution until LNG becomes available. Meanwhile, the Industrial Gas Users Association stressed the urgency of the situation, saying there is only a six to nine-month window to take necessary actions to avoid the 'gas cliff. The organisation "proposed the creation of a gas aggregator model and public-private partnership structures to facilitate infrastructure development and unlock private sector investment". 'VBS was our lifeline': Ramokgopa pressures treasury to restore Limpopo's lost bank

Ramokgopa was speaking on Thursday at a packed memorial service for ANC veteran and revered liberation figure, Reverend Dr Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, held at the George Phagadi Town Hall in Thohoyandou. The late struggle stalwart and former Lutheran bishop passed away on May 29. His funeral will take place on Saturday at the University of Venda Stadium. In her tribute, Ramokgopa honoured Farisani's lifelong commitment to justice, recalling his outspoken defence of VBS victims who lost life savings and community investments when the bank collapsed under a staggering R2 billion looting scandal. 'Government, under President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been for the people. We always said those who stole from VBS must be punished and languish in jail,' Ramokgopa said, adding that the Finance Department and the Reserve Bank should assist the suffering community to revive their only hope, VBS. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading Since the shocking collapse of VBS in 2018, over 53 individuals have been charged with theft, fraud, corruption, money laundering, and violations of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act — accused of siphoning more than R2 billion from the mutual bank that once symbolised financial hope for Limpopo's people. Ramakgopa emphasised that the government has successfully rebuilt several institutions and therefore VBS should not be an issue. MK party wants full disclosure over R9.5bn battery storage projects
Electricity Minister Kgosientso Ramokgopa praised Mulilo Energy as a "great South African success story". The MK party says it wants full disclosure of bid adjudication records after a multi-billion energy tender was awarded to a company headed by former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter's right-hand man, Jan Oberholzer. On Friday, Electricity Minister Kgosientso Ramokgopa announced the appointment of five preferred bidders under the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). De Ruyter's right-hand man Mulilo Energy, chaired by Oberholzer, the Chief Operating Officer of Eskom and Scatec, was awarded five large battery storage projects in the Free State to develop 616 MW / 2,464 MWh of new battery storage capacity for R9.5 billion. Oberholzer was appointed chairperson of Mulilo in September 2023, just two months after leaving Eskom as COO. Out of the five available projects, four were awarded to Mulilo Energy Mulio Energy was founded in 2008 by property developer Johnny Cullum and racing driver Chris Aberdein after a conversation about load shedding. Both remain on Mulilo's board. However, the MK party wants transparency in the bidding process MK party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said they have written to Ramokgopa demanding full disclosure of the bid adjudication records within seven days. 'The uMkhonto weSizwe party is blowing the lid off what appears to be one of the most blatant acts of javelin throwing in post-apartheid public procurement, this time under the green veil of 'renewable' energy. 'Should the Minister fail to comply, the MK party will immediately approach the courts to interdict and suspend these contracts,' Ndhlela said. 'Billions' Ndhlela said 'this is no longer about megawatts. 'This is about the billions being funnelled out of our country under the false flag of progress, and the MK Party will not stand by and watch our state-owned entities being handed over to corrupt white monopoly capital interests'. The Battery Energy Storage Programme is a critical initiative aimed at enhancing South Africa's power system by providing essential ancillary services and increasing grid capacity through energy storage. Projects Other awarded projects located in the Free State will include: Erfdeel BESS (123MW/ 492MWh) Retreat BESS (123MW/ 492MWh) Bloemhoek BESS (124MW/ 496MWh) Vanilla BESS (123MW/ 492MWh) The BESIPPPP Bid Window 3 was launched on 28 March 2024, with bids submitted on 28 November 2024. Ramokgopa said the evaluation process was conducted by an Independent Bid Evaluation Committee 'under strict security measures, took place at the IPP Office.'
