Tougher action on road accident accountability needed, says Azalina
PETALING JAYA: More effective action is needed on those responsible for major road accidents causing loss of life, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said
"Perhaps it is time to assess the effectiveness of law enforcement and consider whether to amend the Penal Code or introduce a new act, similar to what is practised in the United Kingdom.
The Minister of Law and Institutional Reform in the Prime Minister's Department referred to the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, which is a law in the UK.
"This act allows a company to be prosecuted for serious failures in managing the safety of its workers or the public, and for negligence that results in death," Azalina said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (June 10).
She explained the act was established in the UK in response to workplace deaths where no corporate entity could be held criminally accountable under the law.
This is especially relevant for companies providing transportation services, as it involves human lives that are priceless," she added.

Tiang highlighted another major initiative by the state government – the introduction of free tertiary education for Sarawak citizens starting next year. The policy aims to alleviate financial burdens on families and ensure that no student is left behind due to economic constraints. The free education is for Sarawakians studying in five state-owned universities – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College, and Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs). 'I spoke with a parent whose daughter was afraid to pursue higher education after seeing her family struggle with her older sibling's university expenses. 'When I told him his daughter could apply for our free tertiary education programme next year, he was relieved.' Tiang also said that university students would receive a monthly RM1,200 allowance from the state government. 'These efforts give real hope to our younger generation. They don't have to worry and can focus on upgrading themselves and contributing to the community.' He said this at the presentation of electrical items to Destiny for Children (DFC), a local community initiative that provides education to stateless and undocumented children in Sibu. Donated by Sarawak Central Zone Electrical & Electronic Goods Sales & Services Association, the donated items were presented by project organising chairperson Michelle Law to DFC headmistress Pauline Rogers. Tiang also commended DFC for offering early and primary education to children who were otherwise unable to enrol in public schools. He added that the Sarawak government, through the Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Ministry led by Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, had formally adopted DFC to provide financial and administrative support.

Caprice exposes child exploitation ring on Facebook, triggers national fury
SHAH ALAM – A Facebook group sharing explicit content involving underage children has triggered national outrage after social media personality, Caprice exposed its existence through a series of Instagram posts. With over 12,000 members, the group, believed to be active since 2014, has been condemned for its disturbing focus on school-aged children. Caprice took to Instagram to reveal the existence of a Facebook group named 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah,' where members share indecent content involving school children, particularly girls in uniform. Caprice stated that the group, which has now surpassed 12,000 members, openly features inappropriate comments and lewd discussions by adult men, including senior citizens. 'Admin, surrender yourself at the police station within 48 hours. If you do, I won't expose the faces of the group members, including the admin. Don't think we can't trace you...' Caprice posted in a recent Instagram Story. His investigations also revealed that the Facebook group has been active for over a decade and was run by two individuals: a man and a woman. Even more disturbing, the group was set to 'public,' making the vile content accessible to anyone online. Caprice confirmed he had lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and had also tagged the police force as well as the Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, for further action. 'I've reported it to @skmm_mcmc @fahmifadzil. God willing they will act quickly. The admin should just surrender at the police station as soon as possible. If the authorities come to your doorstep, it's going to be a big problem,' he shared in his Instagram Story. Many of the posts featured graphic language and deeply concerning remarks, with members making sexually suggestive comments on photos of schoolgirls. Mek Yun was among the individuals whose old school photos were found in the group. In a strong response posted on her Instagram account, Mek Yun called on fellow Malaysians to take immediate action on the criminally dangerous group. 'Let's all tag @pdrmsia_official @skmm_mcmc and YB @fahmifadzil.1 together. 'I'm also asking everyone to share this video and report the 'Budak2 Sek Rendah' group on Facebook. Let's destroy this group. Don't give them any chance at all to do what they want. Because this should NEVER be normalised,' her post read. Mek Yun also spoke about society's moral responsibility to protect children from such exploitation. 'Who else is going to protect those kids and our children if not us?' she asked. Public reaction has been swift and fierce, with social media users flooding the comments sections on Caprice's and Mek Yun's posts to express disgust, support and determination to see justice served. Many rallied around the noble actions of those who brought the issue to light. 'The older one gets, the closer they should be to God, not chasing lust like mad,' a commenter posted. 'Good job Caprice, fast action on this issue. Serves those old perverts right,' a comment read on Caprice's Instagram post. 'If all you think about is what's below the waist, how are you different from an animal?' an enraged comment read. Despite the overwhelming backlash and exposure, no official statement has been issued by the police or relevant authorities on follow-up action at the time of press. The public continues to tag official bodies, demanding that legal action be taken against the administrators and members of the group.

Gerik bus crash: Accident site among roads slated for repairs in 2025 under RM55mil allocation
PETALING JAYA: The site of the tragic bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students is one of the sections along the Gerik-Jeli route slated for repair works, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. "I and the Public Works Department are aware of road conditions along FT04, part of the Gerik-Jeli route where the fatal accident involving UPSI students occurred," he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (June 10), to address concerns over road conditions at the accident site. "The Works Ministry has already initiated several efforts to rehabilitate the Gerik-Jeli route, particularly FT04," he said. He said in June 2023, the ministry approved an allocation of RM30mil to rebuild part of the FT04 route and another RM30mil was allocated by the Prime Minister in August to upgrade the entire Gerik-Jeli road. He said road upgrades and maintenance works were carried out at critical sections of FT04, including resurfacing and pavement upgrades, street furniture and signage repairs, bridge maintenance and the restoration of street and traffic lights. He added work was completed in stages from July to August 2023 at a cost of RM55.73mil. In 2024, RM7.2mill was allocated for further repairs on other sections of the route. He said the site where the accident occurred was a key section earmarked for rehabilitation, in 2025 with an allocation of RM55mil. "While all parties, especially the families of the victims, are still grieving this tragic event, I urge everyone to allow the authorities the necessary space to complete their investigations," he said.
